Losing Weight by Becoming a Pack Leader

I have had my dog Sadie for about 4.5 years. She is 25 lb mutt (terrier/boxer/beagle) she is very sweet but acts tough, barks constantly at everything and historically has not been great on a leash. This week I have adopted another dog - Mia. Mia is the love of my sister's family - but they have had to separate due to a dog allergy developed by one of my nephews. Mia is a 40 lb shepherd/terrier mix. Dogs will be dogs and they are feeling each other out - taking turns exerting dominance but I will be pack leader. We have started walking 2-4 miles a day together (which they are doing very well) in order to: 1. Wear them out 2. teach them to view me as the leader 3. Let them have time together where they're not vying for my attention 4. Help me lose weight We all win - except the cats - they still hate us all!
  3. Today: B: nothing - wasn't hungry L: 1/2 c. chicken tortilla soup, with a sprinkle of shredded cheese S: grande skinny vanilla latte, 3 chocolate kisses D: 3 oz braised beef, 1/4 c. baked beans S: will probably have 2 mexican truffles
  4. So I worked last night and had family fly into town today (including my new 4 legged friend to be joining my household - first time I've brought a new animal into the household of another animal (so far so good - but I have now been up for 33 hrs.) Today: B: grande skinny vanilla latte S: cheese & crackers L: 1/2 c. chicken tortilla soup, 2 bites bread, 3 chocolate kisses S: beef jerky D: 1 1/3 slice smoked turkey, 1 slice brisket (very thin) couple bites baked beans and 1 bite cheesy potatoes Later: blindly ate chocolate pieces
  5. Happy Bday San Diego! Glad you enjoyed it. Tonight was a 24 hr+ night - Yesterday: B: cream of wheat, made with skim milk, w/ 1 tbls peanut butter S: cheese & crackers, hershey kisses L: 1/3 cheeseburger - w/ carmelized onions - no bun S: trail mix, cheetos  D: 1/2 c. chicken tetrazini B #2: 1/2 c. kashi oatmeal

    Fiber supplements?

I also use benefiber. I put a coffee scoop (1/8 c.) in every shake i make and sometimes in other drinks or soft foods - 1-3 scoops a day.
  7. still weird day - snacked on and off throughout day (need to concentrate tomorrow on specific meals (and healthier) couple bites everything throughout day and repeated: reduced fat pringles, vermont cheddar mac & cheese, chicken tetrazini, baked cod, hershey blisses, chips & queso also had a grande skinny vanilla latte
  8. Yesterday: Did end up staying up for 30 hrs - and then only napped from 3:30-6:30, then went to bed around midnight (3 days in a row of 3 hrs of sleep or less- do not recommend!) Don't know how this affects my band - but I was very tight yesterday. So even though I was up from the previous day - I restarted my meals as below: B: grande skinny caramel latte S: tried 2 bites shredded pork burrito and 1 bite scone (making meals at dream dinners with a friend) - came back up L: multi grain chips and queso - all came back up S: cheetos and 2 hershey kisses (most came back up - knew it would be a bad choice but literally was so exhausted and they were within 2 feet (from guests in the house) D: malted lite chocolate muscle milk shake Rhondalou - I really struggle getting my veggies in - I rarely do and I am not happy about it - it's a goal of mine these next couple months to work on it (a spring resolution!)
  9. Thursday: (was tight for some reason - lot of what went in didn't all stay) B: couple bites queso and multigrain chips S: malted mocha protein shake L: couple bites crustless quiche, chicken S: jerky, cheese D: malted mocha cheesecake protein shake Friday: I was tempted not to even write it down. B: couple bites cheeseburger w/ grilled onions - no bun S: that is all I did all night at work - carrots & dip, cheese & crackers, chocolate, cheetos :scared2:, etc D: will be lite chocolate muscle milk around 0600. I may not end up going to bed till tonight (might be up for 36 hours) and since I only got 3 hrs sleep yesterday - would not be surprised if I ate another meal or 2 by the end of it - will edit post.

    Don't tell me I failed!

You know I don't know if I realized I had it so good in regards to the amount of support I have received in having lap band. I was shocked to read other people's posts about not telling people because of them not being supportive (whether actual or perceived). I have had nothing but support from every aspect of my life - family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, church members, etc. UNTIL this random experience I had the other day. A person, who will remain nameless that I know (don't even know that well but they know I had the surgery) made a comment that just set me off. A group of us were discussing the People issue where they show people who have lost 1/2 their size - I love reading that every year - I find it inspirational. This person simply made the comment "yeah - they were able to do it on their own, not take the easy way out" and then looked in my direction. Now I am a God-fearing/loving woman - but my thoughts became nasty at that moment. Now I bit my tongue - but didn't want to. SO instead I'm releasing the steam here! Don't ever tell me I took the easy way out! This is a fight! I realized that I was no longer at a place where I could do it on my own. I graciously took the help that was made available to me to make my life healthier - I took back control! I don't care if you lose the weight by doing weight watchers, slim for life, surgical intervention, south beach, diet of the month, jenny craig or dammit - just eating less and exercising more - congratulations on however you do it and the positive influence it will have on your health and I pray you keep up the success and the weight stays off - GOOD for YOU! Don't tell me I failed or took the easy way out - I'm glad someone else had success without surgery - I did not feel that was the best decision for me since it hadn't worked so far. Ok I feel better - Thank you!
  11. yesterday - (a 24hr+ day - so normally I would have a 4th meal but I snacked too much at work so wasn't hungry this am) B: malted mocha cheesecake protein shake S's through day: jerky, carrots chips & dip, grapes, cookie, 1/2 cheese stick L: 2-3 oz deli turkey meat, 1 oz muenster cheese, 3 hershey kisses D: the chicken and couple bites pasta from a lean cuisine, 3 kisses
  12. Focusing on eating better is definitely key - however, you really can have just about anything in smaller amounts (that has changed for me slightly now that I am tighter - and some people have trouble with certain foods even when they're not tight - you learn as you go.

Soda was truly one of the hardest things for me - Diet coke and Diet A&W root beer! However, sometimes towards the end of a time period when I need a fill I can still enjoy smaller amounts taken in sips.

Restaurant eating takes some getting used to - I actually enjoy it now - not caring if I spend a little more money on high quality food knowing that it will be about 3 meals for me (talk about getting your money's worth) the weirdest part is some of the stares you get from servers when it looks like you've barely touched your food - I think they feel I didn't like it - so I'm sure to tell them I loved it I'm just not that hungry.

    Good Luck!

    Water Water Everywhere

So I had a hysterical experience in Target - I found they had my favorite bottled water on sale for $1 a bottle usually 1.39-1.79/ bottle. I went in and asked if I could purchase 4-5 cases which they agreed to but said they did not have any more in back - only what was on the shelf. SOOO I took my cart over and proceeded to place every bottle in my cart (63 in all - interestingly enough about 5 cases). Now I really don't think that had I 5 actual cases (boxes) in the cart of the water or 5 cases of a candy bar would I have received such stares as I did with those loose bottles. By the stares of fellow shoppers and store personnel I believe they thought I had some sort of mental disorder. (or as my mom laughed at later that I had prior knowledge of some impending natural disaster no one had heard of coming) What everyone wasn't aware of is that I just love getting a deal and don't mind buying in bulk and if it helps me drink my 2-3 liters water a day - then I will laugh myself through a store with a cart full of loose bottles. I get a kick out of myself - sometimes! *For those of you who are green-minded - I do recycle the bottles (refill a couple times before they go in the recycling bin) but this is a choice I have made for myself.

  15. Sounds typical to me> I am also a charge RN and our census is down too - very odd for us.

  16. San Diego Mom: I am so glad you are feeling better. I can sympathize. Enjoy feeling better - as far as the pics go - I think if you click on my name you can get to my profile and the pictures are at the bottom of the screen when you scroll down.

  18. Kansas City - I don't know if you're familiar with the city at all - but I'm about 5" from the Country Club Plaza.

  19. Luluc - Thank you so much! Although I know I have made a lot of progress - I think the latest picture deceptively shows me looking a little smaller than I am - but I'll take it. San Diego Mom - Been thinking about you - how is it going? Today: B: mocha malted cheesecake Protein shake S: trail mix L: cheese and crackers S: 1/2 small bag movie popcorn (w/ butter) D: about to have leftovers from dinner last night - chicken parmesan
  20. 'COntinued' (first half was too long apparently - read 1st half first) both by itself(sweetened with splenda and served with fruit and a little cereal), in protein shakes for extra protein and fullness, and in recipes: soups for creaminess, mashed potatoes (I pretty much substitute it for anything I would normally get sourcream for) if you've never had it - you would never guess that it's fat free (my favorite brand is Fage) for 1- 6oz serving it is only 90 calories but 20 grams protein.

It has also helped that I love to cook - so I am always experimenting, trying new things, experimenting with ways to make favorites more band friendly.

I also try to drink at least 2 liters water a day - thank God for crystal lite and sugar free powerade.

I did average about 8-10 lbs a month for the first couple but I'm about 4-6 now.

I hope some of this helps - GOOD LUCK!

  21. Thank you very much! I hope you have great success - I'm not sure where you're starting at - but I have lost some more initially than some because I was 300+ to start. It also took me several fills though before I got restriction because I have a bigger band. I'll admit right off the bat that I may have even done better had I exercised sooner - it wasn't until this last month or two that I have really exercised with regularity. My big keys to nutrition have been to allow some treats frequently here and there - but not keep them in the house (or I have problems) but I focus on eating a lot of protein with my biggest key being nonfat plain greek yogurt -

  22. Thank you so much!

  23. Thank you so much. I was just reading about your fight - keep it up - I'm so sorry you have had that struggle. I see you are a fellow midwester - where in Kansas do you live? Hang in there.

  24. Good luck with your new port - hopefully it will work out better for you. I did not receive your friend request - try putting it through again and I will absolutely accept. I laughed about what you said in regards to talking patients - I like it both ways but much prefer the sicker the better. Good Luck!
