  1. I'm scheduled for surgery next Wednesday and have a question about post-surgery limitations on sports activities beyond the everyday gym trip or walk/jog around the neighborhood. I enjoy doing trail runs, mountain/road biking and other sports with my husband and friends. I typically stick to distances of 25k for walking/jogging and 50 miles or less on the bike. My husband wants me to train for a century ride with him (100 miles) after the surgery and I need to know if that is something I can realistically do. My main concern is being able to take in enough water to stay hydrated throughout the ride. I know after surgery you can sip but not guzzle so I'd have to continuously drink throughout a workout but if I'm sweating a lot, can I drink enough to replace what I'm losing so I don't get dehydrated? Is this type of surgery going to prevent me from being able to participate in these longer distance events?
  2. When I had a similar problem, my surgeon recommended Miralax, a stool softener and hitting my daily water goal every 24 hours. He told me to take my nausea meds if needed but to get my water in. I carried it with me everywhere and took a sip every 10 seconds. It took about 48 hours but it worked. Sent from my SM-G930P using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I've been having a problem with severe nausea following my vitamin. I'm 10 days post-op. I tried taking it at night but then couldn't sleep. This morning I was feeling great until I took the vitamin then had to run for my Phenergan. I don't know if the issue is trying to take too many pills too close together. Trying to swallow them too fast. Drinking too much water, etc. I have to take the multi vitamin, pepcid, metformin, and a hormone pill. Is that too many to take in succession? How bad are the scars ?

Here's what mine look like. I will be two weeks post-op tomorrow. Not bad at all. The surgeon put glue on mine rather than steri strips and it flaked off a few days ago. Sent from my SM-G930P using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. Thank you jaejae79, I'll try that tonight. Hopefully it will do the trick.

    Last Day of Purées!!

Were you able to do the ricotta bake as part of your puree stage? I'm interested in trying it. Anything to get off the protein shakes. Blech! Sent from my SM-G930P using BariatricPal mobile app

    Last Day of Purées!!

It's crazy how different they are. Do you think any of them know for sure what they're doing? :-) I never had to do clear liquids following surgery. I was started right away with full liquuds and smooth purees. At 2 weeks post-op I get to do regular food diced small. They said the size of a chickpea or smaller. I thought I was confused about not having to do soft foods so I asked again yesterday. I've seen other people who have a 5 stage diet that progresses clear liquids >>full liquids>>purees>>soft foods>>small dice>>regular foods. It makes me nervous like maybe my surgeon is rushing the progression but I guess he knows what he's about and I'm so tired of liquids I'm not going to argue. 8. I had my surgery last Wednesday, 8/9, and thought I was doing great. No trouble hitting water/protein goals until yesterday when I started to feel really sick every time I drink anything. I get hot, start sweating like crazy and feel like I'm going to pass out. I had to start taking phenegrine again every 4-6 hours to keep anything down. I also have no energy and go back to work tomorrow. I don't know how I'm going to make it. I fall asleep if I sit still for more than a few minutes. Has anyone else had this problem with hot flashes & nausea? Is there anything that helps? I had a post-op follow up with surgeon's office today and they blew it off. I had lots of vomiting in recovery after the surgery so they said it's probably just inflammation and it would go away eventually.
  9. I'm able to get my fluid and protein goals with the phenegrine, it's just incredibly unpleasant. My surgeon put me on full fluids when I went home from the hospital originally and it seemed to be going ok but then the hot flashes started yesterday. I've been doing 2 pure protein drinks, around 80oz of water and 4-6 oz of soup spread throughout the day. I probably have 2oz of protein drink or soup every couple of hours then sip water in between. I can't stand the constant sweetness of all the protein drinks but haven't found anything else that has that much protein so I keep defaulting to them. My surgeon said I can have anything that can be pureed to a smooth paste or pourable liquid. I'm scared to try anything past broth, yogurt or protein shakes with all the nausea I'm having though. I think I'll try going back to just water, broth, and tea for a few days. Hopefully it'll help.
  10. My surgeon had me start on full liquids when I got home from the hospital yesterday. The list he gave me included grits, cream of wheat and mashed potatoes thinned. I keep picturing those tiny grit pieces getting stuck on my staple line. Is this a typical stage one diet or is it usually clear liquids only? I'm only 3 days post-op and am nervous about eating anything except broth, yogurt and water.
  11. I had my sleeve procedure yesterday. I would like to find out approximately how much you were able to drink at one time? I have only managed to get in 10 oz of water, 3 oz of broth and 3 sips of protein shake for the whole day. Is that normal? My tummy is grumbling a lot but I'm scared to take in too much and get sick.

    Fluids post-op

My doc said to shoot for 64oz a day but I wanted to know how much you were actually able to drink. Every little sip is like a hammer to the stomach..
  13. I am scheduled for surgery next Wednesday but am now having second thoughts. I needed to lose about 60lbs and applied for surgery after finding out I am pre-diabetic. I got sick a few weeks ago and lost about 7lbs along with my appetite. I don't know what happened, I'm just suddenly not as hungry and can only tolerate very small portions without feeling sick. I started the pre-op diet and now I am losing about 1lb every 2 days. By the date of my surgery I will be down 15-20lbs from where I started and then only need to lose 40lbs to get to my ideal weight. I am thinking about cancelling my surgery. It seems crazy to have surgery for 40lbs but I'm also worried I'm just getting cold feet and if I don't do the surgery I'll find my appetite comes back and suddenly I'm back where I started. My deductible resets Sept. 1 so putting off the surgery and taking a wait and see approach won't work. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice for me?
  14. Your surgery is tomorrow? Please keep me posted! I go Wednesday. I don't know if it goes against board protocol but I'd be glad to give you my email address if that's easier. I wish you the very best of luck. I sincerely appreciate all the encouragement and advice you've given me. I keep coming back to some of the things you've said and it makes me feel more comfortable with this decision.
  15. I've been on it for 10 years and it hasn't helped with weight loss. It's delayed the onset of diabetes though so at least there's that. I wish I were a pro at weight loss. I've never lost more than 20-30lbs. I've always been very active and was never overweight until I got pregnant the first time. I've been gaining and losing the same weight since then. My A1C has been steadily going up even though I'm following the diabetic nutrition plan so my doctor asked if I had considered weight loss surgery. I'm still having trouble getting my brain around it. One minute I feel like it's the right thing to do and the next I second guess myself and think I'm crazy for even considering it. I wish I felt certain either way. I've already paid for my endoscopy Tuesday so I don't know if I can even cancel and get my money back at this point. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday so I'm hoping for some great revelation by then
  16. I guess not, my insurance approved me. I know 60lbs doesn't sound like a lot comparatively but I'm on the verge of Type II diabetes and my cholesterol is 2x what it should be so it's impacting my health significantly. I know people who need to lose twice as much who don't have health problems like I do so I think this is a good choice to make for my health.
  17. I was diagnosed with type II diabetes in November. I've been hovering at a BMI of 33-36 for the past 9-10 years, since my first pregnancy. I haven't gained any weight in 3 years but haven't managed to lose more than 5lbs either. I'm 5'8", 215lbs right now and need to lose about 55lbs. I know it doesn't sound like much to some people but it's having a significant impact on my health. I am active but unfortunately all my exploits also make me very hungry. If we go ride for a few hours, I'm not hungry at all for a few hours but then I get ravenous and stay that way the rest of the day so I end up eating back everything I burned off. I do plan to take it easy until the doctor clears me to work out but I have a 10k trail run scheduled for November. It will be a fun camping weekend with friends so I'd really like to do it and can walk it if need be. My biggest concern is fluid out vs fluid in because my doctor really emphasized not letting myself get dehydrated. He wasn't able to offer me any advice on the type of longer workouts I'm concerned about so I thought I'd check here.
  18. I know you are right vsgdon. I was very certain about getting the surgery when I started the process last month. I think I'm just getting cold feet because it's so close now. There is nothing in my history that would support the idea I can lose the weight by myself and keep it off. That's why I initially started looking into surgery. I really have tried everything and with my already being somewhat insulin resistant, it has become twice as hard to lose any weight. I already work out several times a week, cook at home and make reasonably healthy food choices. I just eat too much because I feel like I'm always hungry. That's where I'm counting on the surgery to help. Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate you taking the time to post.
  19. Thank you for your insight on this. I am 41, 5'8" 215 lbs and my BMI is 32 (it was 35 when I qualified). I was able to qualify because my doctor started me on metformin last year when my A1C was 5.5 to try and delay the onset of type II diabetes. I only lost 2lbs while I was sick but continued to lose weight after that because I'm just not hungry, which I don't understand. My biggest problem with eating is that I never used to feel full. I could eat and eat and there was no sensation of fullness. Now I can eat maybe a cup of food and feel like I'm going to be sick. My pre-op diet is 5 Optifast shakes a day or roughly 800 calories. I was dreading it and not sure I could hack it but I'm having trouble getting in all 5 shakes. This is just really weird and not anything I've ever experienced... I became overweight about 10 years ago after my first baby. Since then I've bounced back and forth with the same 20-30 lbs. I'd gain it back when pregnant lose it again afterwards but after my youngest 2 years ago, I never managed to get back below 225-230 until now. My family doctor thinks if I get below 200lbs my blood sugar issues will resolve so that's my primary goal. Being around 150-160lbs is more of an appearance goal. My total out of pocket right now is $4500 and my approval is good for 6 months. If I wait until then, it will be around $11,500. Here are my primary concerns: 1) spending $4500 on myself when I could spend it on something to benefit my whole family 2) I'm scared of what life is like post surgery. I've heard so many horror stories - can't eat vegetables, can't eat chicken, no energy, hair loss, terrible indigestion & heartburn. My family is very active so the no energy is a big one for me and I hate fish so if that's my primary protein source post-op I'm in trouble. However, I am scared not to have tge surgery because I've never lost more than 30lbs before so 60lbs is a big deal. And what if I find myself back in the same situation where my stomach goes numb and I'm over eating again? Why can't the magic 8-ball be real and tell me what to do? Is there anyone post-op who can tell me how it's been for you? Do you still feel normal? Are you miserable with the changes? Would you do it again?
