@Apple1 Actually, I don't mean to contradict you, but in my opinion, what you were experiencing from going from eating a low carb diet where you were in lipolysis (fat burning mode), to eating sugar or high carbs is a well-known phenomenon in the low carb world. Most of the low carb docs know of this. It is a benign blood sugar reaction--in many cases. That is why they will tell you that if you've been low carbing and are going to have a glucose tolerance test, then you must go back to being a carb burner (glycolysis) for a minimum of 3 days prior to the test--where you have to eat a minimum of 150g of carbs per day in order to have an accurate picture of what's happening in the GTT. It's almost in the nature of being a reactive hypoglycemic event where your sugars go super high, then crash. It can cause the same symptoms of dumping--fast heart rate, sweating, nausea, the big D, feeling super bad, etc. Happened to me once from having a margarita after years of low carbing. That doesn't necessarily indicate a persons diabetes 2 is out of control again--but it can.

Have you read this book by Michael Mosely? I've read some of his other work and in general I'm fascinated with the SIRT gene research and epigenetics.
  4. @Berry78 Who doesn't love a little Bacon? hehehe Wasn't that the one where they were doing experiments with death? I vaguely remember seeing it a long time ago. Oh man, I so get that! I'm that girl. I'm a What About Bob, Ferris Bueller, Van Wilder, Old School, Neighbors, Animal House kinda girl. (A bear of very little brains...) @MowryRocks You know, normally I would have to agree with you. I think my brain and humor is too purile. You know? I tried to watch Lost in Translation a half dozen times and fall asleep in it every time. But this one I actually enjoyed and I can't tell you why! ROFLMAO! So funny about your watching 2 movies for the price of 1 and overpaying! I saw Mothman and felt so ripped off!
  5. @OmaJ You know I'm not Eggface, right? Your food looks amazing!
  6. @OmaJIsn't it so funny how are preferences are shaped so much from memories of our childhood? You should totally try it without the veggies as Eggface's recipe only using cottage cheese! @Newme17 Hope you like it. It's the perfect dish for leftover roasted or grilled veggies! So filling, too! Those enchiladas look totally awesome!

@Berry78 Sorry, no, that wasn't what I was meaning to say! It was this line that inspired my post: "I don't even know what it would taste like with just true 100% wheat, salt, yeast and water." hehehe In fact, Neopolitan pizza dough--one of the most sublime pizza doughs in the world, has that exact requisite to be considered authentic Neopolitan pizza. The dough must only contain: wheat, salt, yeast, and water. I'm not so sure about whether it's good to eat grains or not. I know for me, it's poison--not just cuz of the celiacs, but because it makes my blood sugar bounce so high after eating it.
  8. I wish I'd taken a picture for you guys! @Apple1 and @Newme17. I just made the most delicious lunch that is a riff on Eggface's Ricotta Bake--only I gak over the texture of ricotta, so I used low fat cottage cheese (Daisy brand). We grew up eating cottage cheese in lasagna because we were poor and very white bread and it's what Mama thought was 70s era authentic. LOL. To this day I lasagna made with cottage cheese! I had some leftover dry sauteed mushrooms and super greens trio and leftover yellow squash/zucchini along with an open jar of Central Market Taste of Italy Marinara (no added sugar, super low carb, 5g carbs 2g fiber per 1/2 cup). So I made quick lasagna. I don't know how you would alter it to be vegan. But it's awesome as lacto-ovo vegetarian! Quick Lasagna Bowl 113 g, 2% Cottage Cheese 1 large, Egg 1 cup, Roasted Yellow Squash 0.50 ounce, Onion 1 clove, Garlic, raw 2 ounce, Mushrooms 2 fluid ounce, Super Greens Trio 0.12 Tbl. chopped, Fresh Basil Leaves 0.12 tsp, Oregano Leaves 1 tbsp, Cheese - Parmesan, shredded 0.50 oz, Cheese - Mozzarella, part skim milk 0.25 cup (120g), Marinara, Taste of Italy (RG) 1 tsp(s), Cheese - Parmesan, shredded Combine the cottage cheese with the egg, leftover cooked squash, onion and garlic. Add dried basil, oregano, and 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese. Stir to combine. Cover bowl with a glass plate and nuke in 1 minute intervals, stirring between each addition, until egg is mostly done. Add leftover cooked mushrooms and greens. Stir to combine. Top with Marinara and mozzarella cheese. Cover and nuke until melted (about 1 additional minute). Sprinkle with the last tsp of Parmesan cheese and some cracked red pepper if desired. Enjoy! Pre-WLS this makes 1-2 servings. Post WLS, this would likely make 4 meals (once you can eat cooked veggies again). 1 serving: 359 cals, 30g protein, 18g fat, 20g carbs, 5g fiber, 15g net carbs It's so good you don't notice the lack of pasta or meat.

I was totally following you and getting you until you hit this point. Dear God, I pray you never have a chance to eat honest to goodness, orgasmic sour dough bread (if we could--given our new anatomy). It's the nectar of the gods! Made only with ground grain, water, salt (and only the yeast made through fermentation). Holy moly. I could shout about it and write sonnets and fill books about it's awesome power. LOL. In a former "life" I used to be a bread baker. I made our own sourdough, used wheat berries and grains that I ground/milled and baked things like bread, pizza, English muffins, pitas, flatbreads, lavash. So, in that iteration, the bread products made had very little processing beyond de-hulling where necessary, roughly grinding, and subjecting it to time and heat. Pure ecstasy. Of course, that was also the time when I ballooned to my highest, most unhealthy weight evs--325lbs. And fast forward almost 18 years and low and behold I'm a celiac. LOL. Jokes on me!
  10. Ok, we're gonna watch The LIfe Aquatic this weekend (with any luck). No can do on the NCFOM or SI. kserrynotserry. Did y'all like The Royal Tenenbaums?
  11. @MowryRocksOk, maybe this weekend. But if I end up having to sleep the the lights on after this and die from sleep deprivation. I want you to know, I will come back and haunt you. Fair warning!
  12. @MowryRocks Ok will I be skeered or creeped out?

Day 3 on this pre-op diet

Carb withdrawal. ((hugs)) Drink lots of water. Maybe take a calcium/magnesium supplement before sleep and that might help you relax. At least that's what I do...
  14. @Walter.Sobchak Hilarious. I didn't put your name together with JG's character! Thanks for 'splainin' me. Dang! I gotta ask though, where are the women on this thread?!!! We need 'em for movie discussion!
  15. @Half-Tum Dear God. Now I'm going to have to watch it a 6th time, JUST to find something abiding in The Dude! (Yes, even though Mr. Fluffy knows I have a movie crush on Jeff Bridges--I still couldn't make it through the movie. It's literally my nephew's favorite movie. LOL) @BigViffer See? Now you've got at least one new, very fun playmate. And there is also @cjsunshine of CJ and the Sunshine Band fame--who should also go play in the Guys' Room. And there are others (I just am drawing a blank on their nics right this instant)...to quote yet another dude film--this one totally awesome...If you build it, they will come.

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

@Introversion Oh yeah. I completely left off the neurohormonal angle! That was more important to me actually in deciding about RNY v. VSG than the GERD issue! It was #1 at the top of my list. Thank you for addressing that!!!

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I looked at it this way...I really get where you're at. I was like that at first too. I wanted to do the least invasive procedure possible, and one that could be reversed. But after hours and hours of research I decided that the statistics for long term complications with the band made it a very poor choice--really it took it off the table as a choice. What I've spent the last few months wrapping my head around is that WLS is a big time Billy Badass solution to morbid obesity. It carries serious risks and serious rewards. It's a high stakes game. So I decided the answer for me is to go with the THE most effective surgery (not including DS). I only want to do this once. I will only get 1 shot at a first chance at WLS. And in these months, I quit looking for ways to "cheat" the system if you will--quit looking for "less invasive" ways to accomplish something. It's kinda like trying to get a job as a doctor without going through the pain and heartache and endurance of med school and residency. I think time is showing with the lapband that long term, there just aren't any good shortcuts. So I'm choosing RNY, now hopefully my body and my surgeon will agree with me and will cooperate! I'm choosing RNY over VSG because I think there is more track record with it and because of my history with GERD.
  18. @BigViffer OMG-John Goodman's character?! What a tool. I had the most immense frustration the whole time I watched him. I just wanted to smack him and tell him to shove off! *snort* (This close. I'm serious. This close to shouting at the tv to eff off. LOL.)

    What If They Ask?

Inquiring minds and all...did you have to schedule a seance to tell your late in-laws?

    Hair growing back...different!?

After chemo mine did also change color in addition to coming back curly. It came back very very gray. Like silver gray. It's so weird though, cuz now, a little over 6 years after the fact, it's back to being brown mixed with gray--but still not full-on salt/pepper. It's now much straighter but it still has curly body that it never had pre-treatment. I wonder if this will happen again to me after WLS? (things that make you go hmmmmm?)
  21. @Berry78 Hahaha! IKR? Maybe it's one of those things carried on the y chromosome--like 3 Stooges? *scratches head*
  22. Yep, count me in that will be another 4 weeks on liquids. Should be exciting! (said no one ever...)

Made it to surgery date 9/21/17 RNY

Congrats on your surgery and surviving the pre-op part of the diet! Can't wait to watch your progress.
  24. Ok so my very favorite is my green smoothie. Don't know if you're allowed to have spinach or blueberries if they are blenderized to smithereens or not? If not, maybe you can use powdered spinach from Vitacost? I keep meaning to try my spinach powder in it. I do it two ways: with/without powdered peanut butter. Green Smoothie: 1/2-1 scoop (16-32g) Isopure Bananas and Cream Protein powder 1 oz frozen blueberries 1 1/2 oz frozen chopped spinach 5g whole psyllium husks, Now brand (or equivalent in Benefiber) 6g Peanut Butter Slim, Vitacost brand powdered peanut butter (has less sugar/carbs than PB2) 12oz ice water 4 cubes ice Blend the crap out of it. It's fabulous! It's not very sweet, so if you want it sweeter, then add a couple of drops of vanilla stevia. (Because I'm still pre-surg I don't need to have as much protein out of a protein drink, so I opt for the 16g of the protein powder. If you use the full scoop, it may be sweeter.)
  25. bahahahahahaha! I swear, I'm the only person on the face of the earth that just doesn't get it!? Is it that The Dude just keeps rollin' with the punches no matter how craptastic his day is going? What am I missing? The last time I was this confused, Napoleon Dynamite was still in high school and Pedro was still running for class office! (I did eventually end up voting for Pedro btw.)
