This guy is amazing. He's one of my heros! Dr. Bernstein is in his 70s and is a T1 diabetic with a better A1c that I have and he has zero diabetic neuropathy. He pioneered the use of the home glucometer and eating to your meter. He was an engineer by trade who went back to school in his 50s and got his MD and specialty. His peeps follow a rigid plan with meals at the same time each day consisting exactly of: B-6g carbs L-12g carbs D-12g carbs All carbs must be super low glycemic sources and meals should have 3-6oz of protein and the same amt. per meal from day to day, with fat to taste and satiety. And his folks have SPECTACULAR results! T1, T2, hyperinsulinemics, PCOS, pre-diabetes, kidney and even liver disease folks benefit from his methodology. He gives webcasts with live Q&As. He's truly just a life changing dude! It truly works to limit the amount of insulin you need or how long/fast you can keep your disease from progressing.

True keto in it's present derivation is "high fat." But when I started with Atkin's '72, 18 years ago, although it's considered "high" fat, by the SAD standard, it was still pretty low. It was around 65% and for today's keto that is very low. The Dukan diet is also keto. It's much much lower version and also gets and keeps you in ketosis. And features very low fat protein. The argument is rabbit starvation. But that's a load of malarky when you are talking about obese people. We have all the fat we need on our bodies at this point.

New here! 3 weeks post-op and down 18lbs!

Wow! I missed this thread. Awesome job! Congrats to you and your amazing success. You're beautiful (then and now)! And welcome (belatedly)! -
It sure could be both, but I think it's the Paxil. I had that like crazy when I was weaning off of Meridia. It took me months to wean off! I would get rushes, flushed, anxious, muscle cramping. I'd take my portion of pill, and poof, within about 20-30minutes that would all go away. So I think there was a relationship between them.

Congrats on your awesome success!!! And congrats on stepping down off of the anti-depressant!

For me, it took me years of yo-yo dieting or getting to a set-point and then not being able to lose without doing an unsustainable alternate day fast with calorie restriction. And the best thing I found when researching for WLS was Dr. Weiner's theory of WLS moving our set-point. So I chose to go ahead with it. Cuz I am a compliant person diet-wise. I can lose weight to a point! But I can NOT maintain. At about month 3, my body starts fighting back. So I look at my RNY as a surgical tool to alter my set-point and also as a maintenance tool. I still have to do the heavy lifting to lose weight and exercise. Can't wait to watch your journey, dude!!!

Has anyone else had to add insulin 4 weeks after sleeve? So depressed.

((hugs)) Follow your doc. I'd possibly ask for a referral to an endocrinologist to manage you. Ask your bariatric surgeon if he or she works with one for their bariatric patients? I'd also maybe want to know if I was truly a T2 or maybe an adult onset T1 masquerading as a T2. Hang in there. Things might now always be immediate!! -
So glad you're eating in a diet that is great for you Creek! Congrats!!!

I think it is super duper important to know your unique body needs when choosing a diet you can honestly stick with and enjoy for life. After 18 years of this low carb lifestyle, this is now simply the way I eat. But I do still call it a diet. I always will. I have very severe metabolic disease. Even now, my fasting insulin level is still on the high end of normal at 14. I have a HOMA-IR score of >3, which means I am very hyperinsulinemic. (Google HOMA-IR). Most women of normal weight average somewhere between 3-5 I think? Were I to adopt Creek's Mayo Clinic Diet, I would be on Metformin and Invokana faster than you could say Jacky Robinson. That's the cold stone truth. Instead, even though my fasting insulin still being high, my A1c is now down around 5.3 (from 6.9 when I ate SAD). So something is CLEARLY working for me. Also, my triglycerides are a little less than 100 and HDL/LDL profile is gorgeous and textbook perfect. So diet is highly individual. We must eat the way our body will function the healthiest.

Sadly, this isn't really the best advice. The ketones you pee out are the wrong kind of ketone your body MOST uses for energy. That kind of ketone is measured in the blood only. The kind you pee out may or may not show on keto sticks. For instance, my blood shows a pretty steady 1-3. When I used to use keto sticks when I was young and just starting in low carb, it barely ever registered over trace. Now after 18 years, the pee sticks never register. But I am in ketosis. Also the level of carbs may be anywhere up to even 100g depending on the individual. Performance athletes like @jess9395 and @jenn1 and others might still be in ketosis at 50-75g of daily carbs or more even! It's highly individual.

You asplode from your gut biome shooting off C4 in your guts because you're eating all that protein and not enough soy and beans! I will attend your funeral and speak of you well...but since I'm ahead of you on the surgery timeline, my puritanical putzy ass will already be in heaven. I'll keep a cloud warm and the light on for ya! See ya soon!

I wish you great success. WTG on changing your lifestyle dude!!!! Cudos!

I think this is pretty normal for us non-normal folks. I'm right there with ya girl! It's part of the process. And part of the post anesthesia blues. Get active!!! Eat right. Follow your doc's plan. Go walking in the sunshine. Join your fam and friends for non-food related get-togethers and re-experience living life. Take each day as it comes. Some will be good. Some will be not-so-great and you just get through them and finish them. Then you're on to the next day with new possibilities. But if these feelings linger, then you probably would benefit from exploring them with a therapist trained in bariatrics. ((hugs))

Honestly, no. It's pretty organic. I follow my RD and surgeon's advice and leave it there. And it naturally falls to around 20% carbs (from low glycemic veggies + very small amounts of low glycemic fruits), 40% fat, 40% protein. I eat around 650-750 cals per day working toward 800cals/day. I get between 68-74g protein per day aiming for 74g protein. I eat healthy fats (avocado, almonds/walnuts/pecans/low fat nut butters/other nuts & seeds), olive oil, butter, ghee. My main protein source in this order is eggs, fish, shrimp, chicken breast, turkey, pork, venison, lean natural beef from TX--in that order. I eat VERY tiny amounts of lentils and other beans along with the seeds, but I don't look to them to give me my main source of protein. My main veggie sources are: leafy greens (baby spinach, baby super greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, rbp, red onion, grape tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, garlic). My main sources of fruit when I eat it is: blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, peaches, GS apple WITH peel). I eat VERY cleanly with VERY little crap and almost no "treats" like sugar free things like Halo Ice Cream, yogurt bars, protein bars (aka candy bars), etc. I'm a puritanical little putz. It works for me. Keeps my body well-nourished without extraneous carbs or "fictitious play" calories, gives me enough fiber to keep my gut biome happy, and me happy. I poop daily now with a little help from my "friends" lol. So my meals look like this: B1: 1/2 Premier Protein in decaff coffee as creamer B2: 2-2.5oz lean protein + 1-1.5oz veg + healthy fat L: same as B2 AS: same as B2 D: same as B2 BS: 1.5oz Premier Protein in decaff or decaff hot tea as a bedtime drink If you want a NON-bariatric excellent book on low carb - then go to the masters: Drs. Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek in The Art And Science of Low Carbohydrate Living available on Amazon.

Can you link me a to a product please? So I don't have to strip my hair first? Just apply the toned conditioner to make it more silvery? I remember my sweet little grandmother had beautiful hair and she applied a rinse that was bright purple. It didn't make her hair purple or blue, but it was a beautiful silver as I recall. I look like her and our coloring is similar!

Good morning kiddie troopers! It's Weigh In Wednesday! Let's get ready to rummmmmbbbbbbllllleeee!!!! hehe Post your stats if ya got 'em!!! HW 287 (May 5) SW: 222.4 (Feb. 20) Last week: 191.2 Today: 188.6 So, down 2.6lbs since last week, 33.8 (I don't know where I got my stat on this last week...DERP) since surgery, and 98.4 lbs down from my highest weight. I'm approaching the century mark. Yeeehaw! This week has been great. Maybe a little less pain the hip, and walking outside in the sunshine has really made me feel good and impatient to be even smaller to see if it will help even more with pain! Hope you all are well! -
When did you begin exercising after surgery?
FluffyChix replied to baribetty's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I started walking the day of surgery and never looked back. I walk every day. Now, I'm up to walking 1-40 minute session and 1-30 minute session per day--that's over 2 miles per day which sounds wussy, but is HUGE for me. At 6 weeks I was released to do strength training and I began in PT again to help me build core strength and endurance in preparation to working with someone to help me with a strength training (weights) plan. I have no limitations. -
I do low carb, not "keto". I make that distinction cuz I am old-school. I don't do a bunch of fancy gyrations and artificial stimulation to get my fat high. My keto comes by simply doing no more and no less than dropping my carb level to <50g per day. That gets the body into ketosis. But to be fair, most of us who are eating <800cals per day are probably already in ketosis by proxy of a VLCD (very low calorie diet). So we're already producing ketones for fuel--unless you're consuming a butt load of daily carbs in that 800 or less per day diet. It's can be a good and healthy diet. I do low fat; choose low fat proteins and reduced fat dairy, but my fat still falls in about the 40% range. Anyway, it works for me. But if you over-consume carby food, you WILL see a jump from glycogen stores refilling with water and it takes 2-5 days to re-empty them. That's anywhere from a 2-8lb weight gain overnight. It can be brutal psychologically. But I truly believe this is the way that will maximize my weight loss period. For me.

I would so watch that, too! ROFLMAO! Did you ever see the episode of Cheers where Cliff was on Jeopardy? That's actually what inspired this post. LOL. "Who are people who've never been in my kitchen." *snort*

Time for the Double Jeopardy round! Answer: Today I'm doing laundry, cleaning house, and therefore hanging out on these boards WAY too much! Question: What are ALL the things I hate doing and how do I procrastinate, Alex for $500! Ok, going to power dust the dining room now... How do you like to waste time?
