My surgery was Sep 6th and I have lost 60 pounds so far. I was told to sip on a protein shake throughout the day (do not use it for meal replacement) until I was able to get 60 grams of protein per day and then to get off the protein shakes because it will slow the weight loss. I was also told to get off "SLIDER" food as of my 2 month follow up. I asked what Slider food was and was told it is anything with liquid type consistency that slides right through my pouch without stopping (I was eating cottage cheese for breakfast and lunch and they want me to eat more solid food). They wanted me to eat more solid food so it would stay in my stomach longer and I would get more of the nutrients from the foods I was eating.

I have had such a great experience with gastric bypass I needed to share it with people who are concerned or are having doubts. There are a lot of posts out there where people have had a hard time before during and after the surgery so I thought I should set the record straight. My experience was great from the start. The liquid diet the week before surgery was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I lost 15lbs. The surgery was uneventful with no pain other than hurting when I coughed, laughed or rolled over in bed but that only lasted about a week. At first I found myself either eating too fast or too much but your body punishes you for that so you learn quickly when to stop. As far as eating too much a good rule of thumb is as soon as you start to feel full STOP. If you still have food in your mouth you need to spit it out, don't try to swallow it. My primary reason for having the surgery was to cure my diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and it has. I had my A1C checked this week and it was at 5.8 and I have been off all meds since I started the liquid diet the week before surgery. For those of you reading this who are worried about the procedure and your life after the procedure just remember to follow your doctors instructions, eat what you should and stay away from things you shouldn't eat. Watch your portion sizes and slow down. Stay clear of all carbonated beverages and get plenty of exercise. I believe by following my doctors plan is why I had such an easy time. Good Luck to all, I hope you are all successful in meeting your goals. Here is my latest progress picture. The first picture was taken 8/20 but I was still at 265 lbs on the day I started my liquid diet (8/31/17) so I use that as the start date.

I had RnY Surgery on Sept 6th and so far am down 42 lbs. I followed the doctors instructions to the letter for the first 2 weeks but have been deviating a little here and there. I am still eating pretty much nothing but protein. My diet consists mainly of eggs, cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt, re-fried beans, lunch meat, chicken breast meat and the occasional can of cream soup. everything I eat is the Low fat or No fat variety. Here is where I have deviated, Today I had 2 cups of coffee (I am not suppose to have caffeine until week 8), I went back to puffing on the occasional cigar about 2 weeks ago, in the last week I have started having either wine or a little whiskey with my cigar. I was told not to go to the gym until week 6 but found myself there for the first time today (4 weeks after surgery). I feel great and healthy and strong, I have plenty of energy. I had surgery on a Wednesday and would have gone back to work on Friday if I hadn't already turned in my time card for the week. I did go back to work the Monday after surgery and never had any problems, not even any discomfort. I think everybody is different and we can all tolerate things differently. I don't think I am doing anything wrong when it comes to my recovery or weight loss but I do feel a little guilty for not following all the instructions I was given. -

Thanks for all the great information. I am sure there are a lot of people reading this who will find it very useful. -
It has been a little slow on here lately so I thought I would post another progress picture. Sorry for being so willing to share but after so many years of trying on my own I just can't control my excitement so I have to share. I am still off all meds except Omeprazole and hopefully I can stop taking that after my 2 month appointment on 11/7. For the guys out there, I have had ED problems for years. I don't know if it was because of the meds I took or my weight but I am very happy with the results in that department also.

Does anyone else take or plan on taking progress pictures? My surgery is 2 1/2 weeks away so I took my before pictures this morning. I took front, back and both sides (with nothing on but a pair of boxers) and I put the date and my weight at the bottom of the pictures. I plan on taking pictures every week to show my progress. I enjoy putting up websites so I will probably create a progress website once I have my surgery. I thought about posting one of my before pictures on here but didn't want to offend anyone, it is hard for me to see myself this way which should really help stay the course once I get started. While typing this post I thought about it and figured posting my back picture shouldn't offend anyone but if it does let me know and I will remove it.

I had gerd prior to bypass and took Omeprazol every day. My surgeon told me to take Omeprazol for 2 months after surgery and then I can stop it. I haven't experienced any issues and looking forward to stopping the Omeprazol on November 7th. That is the last of my pre surgery meds that I am taking. My by pass has cured my diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and has really helped my ED (the ED issue is getting better all the time).

as stated earlier, I am following the diet with the exception of having 2 cups of coffee yesterday. Other than that I have eaten exactly what they have told me I could eat. I have no plans or desire to eat out side their set plan for me. -

I still follow the diet guidelines completely, I still can't eat more than 1 egg at a meal or 4 oz of cottage cheese. The only place I really deviated was with the coffee yesterday morning and the occasional cigar (they don't want you to smoke whether you have had the surgery or not). They never said I couldn't have a drink from time to time they just told me I would feel the effects of the alcohol a lot quicker. The reason I was told to stay away from caffeine was because it slows down the healing process and after 4 weeks I thought I was pretty much healed. As far as going to the gym, I just can't sit still I want to get up and be doing things all the time. 2 days after surgery I resumed my 1 to 2 mile daily walks. I have always been very active and to sit around and do nothing for 6 weeks would kill me. -
well it has been a couple of weeks since surgery and life is great. Here is my before and after surgery pictures. The after was taken on 9/10 which was 4 days after surgery. I will take my next after pic next Sunday 9/24. So far I have lost 30 lbs.

I had mine on Wednesday morning, I would have gone to work today if I hadn't already turned in my time card. The only issue I have is when I sneeze, blow my nose or getting in and out of bed. My left side where they put the drain and the pump is very sore. I guess it is like having a hernia. They gave me some oxycodone and it knocks down the pain pretty well. I can't believe I am no longer hungry, Tomorrow, I get to add Greek Yogurt and cream soups and protein shakes back to my diet.

I prefer Premier Protein shakes, Chocolate is my favorite. They have 160 calories, and 30 grams of protein. I have been drinking them for about a year and a half

Finally, I had my RNY bypass surgery yesterday. I was groggy all day yesterday but once I got up this morning and started moving around my head started feeling normal again. I was on a week long Liver Reduction diet and was able to lose 17 lbs that week. I am not in much pain, it mostly only hurts trying to get up and down in bed. I haven't had any problem with keeping water down which is a real surprise for me, I tend to guzzle at times. I am glad to be on the path to a much better life.
-
Well my surgery is still 2 days away and so far on the liver reduction diet I have lost 16 lbs in just under a week. I have been living on 2 protein shakes, 16 ounces of broth, 2 or 3 sugar free pop cycles and a cup of sugar free jello a day plus about 80 ounces of water. I don't feel hungry but do have cravings for my favorite foods. I plan on taking my first progress picture next Sunday, I will be about 4 days post op.

Wow, you have had great results. Congratulations!

I got my insurance approval letter yesterday (it only took 2 weeks after the request was submitted). Needless to say I am very excited. Hopefully within about 3 weeks I can have surgery. I currently take 6 injections a day for diabetes and am looking forward to the day I am off all medications. I also have issues with ED so I am hoping after I am off all meds and drop a bunch of weight that area gets better also. This is the 2nd time being in the program. The first time was 2 years ago and about 2/3 the way thru my insurance changed to a policy that didn't cover it so I had to stop after being in the program about 5 months. This past January I purposely switched employers just to get back to the good insurance and it worked. I am a contractor for the federal government so my employer and benefits could change at any time so I have been holding my breath hoping that I could get through the program and the surgery before I get moved to another contract company again.
