    Dr. Garth Davis

I follow him on FB. Asked him about why bariatric pre and post-op diets are so heavy with animal fat and protein, and what physiological benefits that has. He actually answered me. "None. No benefit. Just baseless dogma." His new book Proteinaholic arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to read it!

    Onederland!

Finally made it! It’s been at least 15 yrs that I’ve been in the 200s. Very exciting!

Found this at the grocery store. First time I’ve found pea protein in liquid form. Was hesitant, but tastes great. A bit thicker than soy or almond milk, and a tiny amount of noticeable grit, but far less than powdered. Had it in coffee and it was great!

    Under 40 BMI RNY Discussuins

Look what I found yesterday at Publix! A little thicker than almond milk, but no gross aftertaste. 8gm protein per serving.

    Under 40 BMI RNY Discussuins

My BMI was 38.5 and my HW was 238. We did the surgery to try and help my gastroparesis. I’m an odd case, and my surgeon and gastroenterologist decided to give it a try because my gastroparesis symptoms were so bad. I also have Crohn’s, scleroderma, Hashimoto’s, fibromyalgia, and a bunch of other autoimmune issues. Surgery was 8/9/17 and finally today I hit Onederland (39lbs total lost so far). Weight loss has been slower than most people because we’ve been focusing on reducing gastroparesis symptoms. I have to continually remind myself not to compare my weight loss to anyone else’s. My husband had the surgery a while back and lost over 150 lbs- the weight just melted off effortlessly. For me, each lb has been a struggle. I also have to remind myself that I did this to help my horrible gastroparesis, and the weight loss is a nice side effect. Overall, my stomach pain has been reduced, and my stomach emptying is pretty good. But I’ve still got terrible nausea, almost 24/7. Surgeon says to be patient, which is hard!

I agree with you that it is a struggle to get in what you need. I’m only 8 weeks postop and every day is a battle. I didn’t mean to say it was easy. I definitely have plant-based protein powder almost every day for 10-20 grams boost. I’m not a pure vegan, so I will eat an egg or have some cheese. I was just trying to say that as a whole, we (Americans) eat way too much protein, when we should be upping our plant based foods and worry less about protein. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a regular person that’s protein deficient (not accounting for the poor, hungry, already sick).

But NO ONE, bariatric or regular stomach, needs 80 grams of protein a day. Even the nutrition standard of x grams per kilogram/pound of body weight is too much. Cavemen didn’t eat meat 3 times a day, 7 days a week, so Paleo is way off, too. I’m averaging 40ish grams a day on a mostly vegan WFPB diet. Most mornings I have plant protein powder in my coffee, which could be up to 20 grams right there. I’m not struggling to get protein-dense foods in, so I can eat what makes me feel good. I have an egg several times a week, and cheese a few times too. Otherwise, protein is coming from soy, legumes, and other plant based foods. Boca Burger- 10 to 15 grams right there! A spoonful of nut butter- 7ish grams. So, my long-winded point is that Americans are eating way too much protein. There is no single right amount that applies to everyone, but it’s certainly not 80+ grams as prescribed by my surgeon and dietician.

Not necessarily eggs and cheese together! Although they are yummy together. Cheese on refried beans is life altering!

I'm going to do a 2 wk experiment. WFPB for 2 weeks and compare how I feel and my weight loss. I really think the high dairy protein is adding to my nausea. Full disclosure, there will be eggs and cheese a few times each week because I like them and they make me happy.

I just had my 1 month postop with dietician and surgeon. I was cleared to eat anything (??) and given an eating plan with a daily goal of 80-90 grams of protein. I am not a scientist, doctor, or dietician, but I just know this can't be right. How is it that we have all these amazing and miraculous feats of science and technology, but the medical and scientific community cannot agree on what we should be eating?
  14. Hi peeps, I had sx on 8/9. Was back for readmission last week bc of dehydration. At first my weight loss was slow. Now it seems to be about a pound a day (or more). But I feel it's all muscle that I'm losing, not fat, and I'm worried. I'm definitely NOT getting in all my fluids or protein- maybe 40ish grams of protein and 32 oz liquids. I'm also exhausted and dizzy. I can't eat/drink anything with artificial sweeteners/flavors since they make me sick. I'm also a vegetarian. Last week while inpatient my labs showed I was in ketosis. Now I'm on phase 2, so full liquids and purees. Still getting in a protein shake each day, plus eggs, and some carbs like potatoes and sweet potatoes. I'm hoping that any muscle mass I'm losing will be able to regain once I can exercise. Is this how it's supposed to go?

    Scareddd

I've had lots of surgeries, so I wasn't too worried about the pain. The pain I've had postop has been not fun, but definitely tolerable. However, I don't have kids and was able to rest as much as I wanted. I can't imagine trying to heal and rest while taking care of 2 little ones. I know moms do it all the time because they are super women! Check with the dr to see when you'll be able to lift your kids up. I would imagine that would be hard on you, especially without help. The pain has honestly been the easiest part. My nausea has been terrible, and I've been weak.
  16. I'm having a super hard time getting in fluids and protein. Everything tastes really bad. I have a horrible taste in my mouth all the time. Did anyone else experience this?
  17. I use a lot of Isopure. Will def give Synthrex a try. Thanks!

That is exactly what he replied to me. I asked why the pre and postop diets rely so heavily on animal protein, and what is the physiological benefit. He said "None. Dogma."

    Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years and a part-time vegan for about 2 years. I highly recommend Dr Garth Davis' new book called Protein-aholic. He's also on FB and actually responded to a question I asked. He's a bariatric surgeon who recommends vegan. I will still do dairy for a while, but once I can eat real food I will phase it out slowly. I've noticed a lot of people on here are keto, basically Atkins. It's expensive, and not easy to maintain long term. I've read numerous peer-reviewed studies and meta-studies that say we're eating way too much protein. I'm nowhere near any kind of expertise on diet and nutrition, but I know how I feel when I eat mostly plant-based vs. a heavy animal protein diet. And I flat out refuse to believe that fruits are bad for us. Juice is debatable. But I will never cut out whole fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes. Just my 2 cents.

    I GOT MY DATE!(AUGUST )SURGERIES WHERE U @

I've had so many surgeries before. But this one is making me freak out. My husband did it 5 years ago and had the easiest time. I know lots of happy RNYers. I work with a lady who had it 14 years ago. I know it will help with a lot of my health problems and am looking forward to that. But no one knows if it will help my gastroparesis, which is really why I'm doing it. My BMI is barely 39, and CW is 228. So, definitely have lots to lose. But this procedure is a last resort to help with my gastroparesis. Also, I'm self-pay, which really sucks. So much money- we had to take out a loan.
