    Taste Buds

8 weeks out and my taste was affected quite a bit. Sweet things were an immediate no go. Regular sugar isn't as severely sweet to me, but sucralose which is in pretty much every shake or protein drink is a no go. That also took out propel and Powerade zero for me. I'm already allergic to stevia so my options are limited. I had to go to an unflavored protein powder in some fairlife milk to hit those early protein goals after surgery. Thankfully my surgeon gets you on really food quickly. The other strange thing was I couldn't stand the dishes from the dishwasher. I used a lemon scented detergent and I could "taste" it on my cups or silverware. It was awful. My husband and kids thought I'd lost my mind. It was like being pregnant again with the super senses. Even handwashing didn't help. I had to use disposable for about a week and then once I switched detergents a couple times, I finally was okay with it again. Totally didn't expect that. So far, all food has been okay. Nothing tastes as good as it did before surgery, but that's been helpful because it keeps me from wanting to eat often. I'm more mindful when I do. Dr. McCarty & Mini Sleeve

I just had the mini sleeve done back on Thursday morning. I love Dr. McCarty. He's knowledgeable, kind, and reassuring. My insurance requirements were minimal due to my BMI. The staff is great. Nutritionist is nice and helpful. The surgery center I was at required an EKG and chest x-ray for clearance for anesthesia. Something was off on x-ray, so Dr. M got me set up for a CT scan quickly to not delay my surgery date. I was really concerned about that, but when I went in for my pre-op appt he reassured me that it wasn't anything he was concerned about. We just needed the CT report to satisfy the anesthesia dept. Sure enough, a couple days later, all was well and my surgery was on time. The first couple days were rough (gas pain is no joke and I kept having diaphragm spasms for some reason), but I'm getting better every day. No regrets.
