I think if you have sleep apnea you will use the mask because you know you want to sleep. I can't sleep without mine and I have the mask that covers my nose but not mouth. I do take an over the counter sleep aid like a generic unisom (orange) and clonapin (sp) but sleep has been an issue for me for years!!!!! The funny thing is that at my sleep clinic putting a mask on me was never an option and everyone else says that they were going to have a mask put on them if they were found to have apneas and I had many, even for the short amount of time I was able to sleep. I guess each place was different. Oh and I wanted to take a sleeping pill but they said it could screw up the study, so I didn't. Believe me I did not wake up bright eyed or bushy tailed! I don't have bc/bs but get all the documented probs you can, lol. No seriously it does help and if you have sleep apnea and start using the machine until you hopefully lose enough not to need it again you'll feel better too. I also had diabetes II, thyroid. Do you have any back probs or anything like that? That always helps. brandyII

What about the smokers. I mean I never understood those lawsuits. My mother died in 1974 from lung cancer, could I sue for being an orphan now?

cthomas..., I don't know how old you are but they had them when I was in school too. I didn't use this forum until I was having problems about 7 months after my surgery and was searching for answers. I hadn't lost but gained back all the weight I lost on the pre-op diet. This forum has helped me a lot and I think I may have started to turn things around finally. You're lucky you started this prior to surgery because you learn more here than anywhere! Good luck to you on your journey, brandyII.

I remember back in the early 80s they were injecting people with the urine of a pregnant woman because it was supposed to speed up your metabolism, I was in my 20s and some of my friends found out about it and we actually went to some quack who did this to us! What we'd do to lose weight!

They made me go for a sleep study after I failed their pulmonary tests and had a low oxygen level in my blood. I really didn't know anything about sleep apnea at the time but had problems with insomnia at night and always tired during the day. I only needed one study even though I swore I didn't fall asleep I guess I had and they found me to have sleep apnea and have been sleeping with a CPAP machine ever since and I feel so much better. They made me bring it to the hospital to use after surgery also. My daughter on the other hand has disrupted sleep because of her snoring but no apneas and they made her go through two sleep studies to find this out which is weird to me. Anyway she did and found she can't sleep with the machine so we ended up returning it! Anyway sleep apnea is dangerous and if she had that I would have made her use it! She's 19 so what can you do. I was on phen-fen for only one month prior to it being ripped off the market. It was wonderful while it lasted and kept me awake during the day too! I had to have the echo also but it was just one more test to do out of a million so not that big of a deal and I was fine. Seemed funny though because I was on the drug for such a short time but they really wanted to check anyway. brandyII

I had my band too tight and couldn't drink and vomited up my own saliva but not actually had food stuck. I've mostly had my band too tight and wasn't able to eat the healthy foods so now that I've been opened up even more I am doing much better and starting to lose weight for the first time since 8/07! Everyone is different on the band as to their restriction level it's kind of something that you end up having to tinker with sometimes and the more you learn and work with your surgeon the better! It's one of those topics that I suppose is too personal to discuss at some point. It's relative to everyone differently. I probably worded that incorrectly good thing my daughter the linguistics major isn't around! I have a fear of getting down to that very thin size again and putting it back on because it has happened twice before. Does that make sense. I'm afraid I will fail again and it's not under my control. I want to lose the weight but if I don't or if it comes back on again then what? I can't live the rest of my life miserable!!!! Yikes, only my fellow bandsters and pre-post bandsters can relate to not my hubster.

I refuse to even buy a suit this summer, I don't have a pool and don't plan on going to the beach. I'd have to order one on line anyway and the chance of that one looking good is at least 50/50!

It's one thing at a time and it's hard to diet and quit smoking at the same time, I know that for sure, you've beaten this and if you choose to you'll beat that too! Good luck to you brandyII.

TexasBecky, I was banded on 8/22/07 and am just starting over because from what I gather I was always over-filled and couldn't eat foods correctly and depended on the easy foods and gained it all back. It's kind of exciting and depressing to see that we both had surgery at the same time and how well you have done for yourself. gingerbug, I know but it's so hard not to define yourself by your size. I was always heavy and then lost 100 pounds when I was 19 and turned my whole life around. Then at 21 I put it all on again and took it off again at 22 and then put it back on by the time I had my last baby at 28 and have been obese ever since. This is my last resort and it was a lot harder on me being overweight after I had lost it than prior to losing it the first time for some reason. I guess I felt like a failure and people had seen what I looked like then and then put it all on they don't understand it. Anyway you look like you've come pretty far so good luck on your journey, brandyII.

Hey I was a carton a week smoker so I know what it's like. Half the reason why I'm fat today is because I quit smoking years ago. My daughter had picked up the habit and is going to get the surgery and had to quit too but I think they also said smoking is harder on you after you've had surgery. It's like not taking ibuprofen it's a similar situation I think. But I know how hard it is to deal with weight issues and smoking and I'm not trying to be a lecturer to you. gingerbug, It does make sense, some of us are blessed with confidence no matter what size we are and some of us aren't. I just wish I was one that could be happy no matter what you know? I want to be healthy too but still the confidence shouldn't have to come from a number.

They wouldn't do our surgery unless we quit smoking six weeks prior to surgery, I guess they're all different.
