I use a pill grinder, grind it up, and put it in a drink.

I don't know if hiccups are common after a fill, but I have gotten them quite often since I've been banded. I just got my first fill on Tuesday and I have gotten them once, but I got often before I got banded too. I just assumed that hiccups were part of the deal, so I'll be interested to see if others get them too.

Whom did/will you tell?
gina s. replied to Nachtigall's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no suggestions at all, I think the you know what will be best for yourself. I'm one of those people who told everyone....I see my family and extended family and friends all of the time and they're smart enough to figure it out even if I didn't tell them. And I did come across a few people who tried to get me down about it, but I had my mind made up and I knew that getting banded was right for me so it didn't matter what their opinions on the subject were. The important people stood behind my decision, that's what I need and that's what I got. I hope you can get that too, good luck! -
I got my first fill yesterday, I have twenty-four hours of full liquids and then twenty-four hours of mushies........they will be giving me fills every two weeks and that is what I have to do each time I get one.

I was right on the borderline too, I'm 5'7.5'' and weighed 243 lbs, my BMI was 37.5. I had one co-morbidity. You shouldn't worry about it, I think you'll be fine......I'll keep my fingers crossed for you just in case though!

You guys are so lucky! I had two weeks of liquids before surgery also......but I did lose 12 lbs and got a good headstart, so I guess I shouldn't complain. Congratulations!!!

I don't know if this is how I should feel or not...
gina s. posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my first fill today, 4 cc's in 10 cc band. I was extremely nervous, but my nurse shot the needle home and had me filled within a minute or two, and without numbing meds. It was practically painless. Then I had to drink four ounces of water before I left, and as soon as my first sip went down I got that tightness in my chest, like something is stuck..... but water can't get stuck. It eased after a while and I kept taking sips and letting them go down....it took me a good ten minutes to drink that little bit of water. When I got home it was lunch time, and I made some soup since I have to be on liquids for twenty-four hours. I took a little sip, waited for the feeling to go away, repeated about ten times. I got down maybe a fourth of the serving before giving up. So my questions are these: Does everyone feel that way after a fill, and does it get better once the swelling goes down? -

Thanks Suzanne! I think that you're right, I was just tight right afterward. I'm feeling better today, I can actually get some water and soup down! -
I know two gastric bypass patients here who've had Tricare Prime pay for tummy tucks, and one of them got a breast lift paid for too. Both of them had the procedures done less than two years after their bypass surgery. I have another friend who is having surgery this month, she's getting a breast lift and Tricare is paying for that too, and she's never even had WLS.....makes me wonder what they're telling their doctors!

It honestly did not hurt one bit.......those little Lovenox shots that I had to take for a week after surgery hurt worse than getting filled today! I was so nervous about it that I didn't sleep much last night, but I laughed at myself today because it was totally nothing to be nervous about! -
That makes me feel so much better! Thanks!

I'm four weeks post-op, and I get another fill in two weeks.....I'm just wondering if anyone else has felt this way after their first fill? Or any fill for that matter... -
I had my first fill today, and I haven't read a post that sounds like what I have experienced so I thought I would share and see if others felt like me. I got 4 cc's today in a 10 cc band, and I had to drink four ounces of water before I left the office (by the way, the fill was painless and the site wasn't even numbed first!). I took a sip of water and immediately felt that tightness in my chest, like when something doesn't go down right. Then I started feeling like I needed to burp, and I could feel a little air coming up. Then the feeling receded but occurred every time I took a sip.....it took me a good ten minutes to drink that little bitty cup of water. The nurse didn't seem concerned by it, so I came home and made some soup for lunch since I'm on liquids for 24 hours, and the same feelings occurred with the soup too. I know that it will ease up some and that fills can cause swelling, I'm just wondering if others felt this way after their first fills and if so, how long does it take to feel normal? Thanks!!

I had Tricare Prime too, and it was pretty easy. I wasn't sure if I hit the 100 lb. overweight mark either, but I guess they thought I did!

Just do what you feel is right for you....if she's really your friend, she'll be there through it all anyway.

blood thinner injections

I think my surgeon just gives them to everyone as an extra precaution....I've never had any of those things, and my co-morbidity was high blood sugar that I controlled by diet. -

Birth Control Pills before surgery
gina s. replied to ligaleagle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was taking Depo shots and I had to stop those before surgery also. The reason is that taking hormones increases the chances of blood clots forming. I had to stop two weeks before surgery and can't start taking them again until four weeks afterward. I got my last Depo shot in January and my next one was due in April, but I didn't take it because I already knew I would have to quit them before surgery anyway. Apparently some doctors don't mind, but I guess some of them do. It's just an extra precaution. Good luck! -
Question, Help! Big 'ol lump in throat??
gina s. replied to ImaGoofball's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no idea, I haven't had my first fill yet but if I were you, I'd call my doctor.....good luck and hope you feel better soon. -
You sound like my best friend....I loved the shots so much that she started taking them, but she hated them and had double the periods whereas I had none, and they gave her headaches and made her nauseous. I'd been taking them for three years when I got the last one in January. My surgeon wanted me off of them. I was a little worried about what would happen when I stopped taking them, but I have a light period every month for about five days, so I guess my body just tolerated it well. I'm going next week to get back on something (my surgeon wanted two weeks hormone free before surgery and four weeks after), I think I want to try something different just because I was on the shots and didn't have periods for so long. Like Angelyco said above, every doctor is different. Mine gives everyone seven days of self-injected blood thinner after surgery and still made me go off of the shots.

I had to take Lovenox for seven days after my surgery too...I made my husband do it and it wasn't bad at all. He would pinch my belly fat and just go for it!
