Nothing like healing at home

I didn't think I'd feel this way. Vent.
apu replied to a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm getting a tone of some underlying anxiety and depression in your post. Since you have already been down the counselling road you should talk to your GP and see if a trial of SSRI would not be helpful. Best wishes. -
Did anyone do anything crazy being wheeled into the OR?
apu replied to Véronique's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I remember the anesthesiologist asking me to scoot higher up on the table as I was picturing everything in the room and then lights out. -
Trying on smaller sizes
apu replied to SIPS in Seattle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
For the last 20 years I have had to wear suit and tie for work. As I got heavier in that period I slowly started stopped wearing a tie because I could no longer do up my top button on my dress shirts. Then the jacket became uncomfortable along with with my unforgiving dress pants. In the last couple of years I decided I was going to dress casual Friday style with stretchy jeans and dress shirt but everyday. Despite a fairly strict dress policy at work no one seemed to notice or really care that I was starting to look really dumpy. Despite the stretchy pants , the extra large shirts were spilling out my pants because of my generous tummy and I was having trouble finding belts bigger than 44 inches to contain everything. For me one of the worst things about being overweight was trying to be reasonable comfortable for 8-12 hrs a day in professional clothes. It just didn't happen. Now, I still like to wear jeans at work but its a fitted pair of size 36 Calvins, a nice tailored fit dress shirt, and fashionable set of dress shoes. Now feel like I am rockin casual Fridays( every day ) as a choice not as my only option . -
What's your reason for your obesity
apu replied to Siyaa Ela's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Emotional eater at times but mostly I have been messed up since I had my thyroid irradiated over 15 years ago. I have never been right since even though my physician keeps telling me I'm ok. -

apu replied to ReadyforChangeChan's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I can throw down a full glass of water in 10-15 seconds no problem, 3 ounces of chicken or fish and I am stuffed to bursting -
Serious about MEXICO but many questions and concerns
apu replied to Kristi Jacobs's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
The other thing that is more worrisome is that its not likely the surgeon that is doing 10 procedures has 10 separate sterilized equipment sets. More likely they recycle a couple of different sets and sanitize for 20-30 minutes in antiseptic solution between patients(kinda like the barber-sol that hair dressers keep their combs in) . Which is "ok" but not quite the same as sterilizing in an autoclave. This was a conversation I had with my surgeon Dr Kelly who made a point that he significantly invests in his equipment and each patient gets their own sterilized set. I also felt fortunate that I had his undivided attention as i was his only surgery on my date. He did an awesome job, no regrets. -

Who had sleeve surgery in Mexico?
apu replied to JR15's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had my sleeve done with Dr Ramos-Kelly 3 weeks ago. It was a great experience. I had very little post op discomfort and no gas related pain. I was back to work on day seven. 3 weeks out I can't believe I even had surgery as I feel absolutely fantastic. I mostly attribute this to his appreciable skill from well over 10,000 bariatric surgeries. I elected to have it done at Clinica San Juan mostly because I considered myself a low risk surgical patient. The Clinica is small and relatively speaking low frills. He also works out of Angeles Hospital which is state of the art and quite posh but it is about 3 grand more, Excellent choice if you have health related comorbidities or very high BMI. -
My experiance of an all you can eat buffet.
apu replied to dreamingsmall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not been to a buffet yet since surgery but I think my strategy would be non creamy soups and veggies/salad first as they are healthy sliders for me and the 2-3 ounces of protein to close her shut. I think it would be fun. My wife was all concerned before the surgery about us never going out. I just never saw it as a problem, my choices are just way more healthier now. We went out to a Vietnamese restaurant recently I had a delicious seafood Pho. I ignored the noodles and the friends who were with us, who don't know about my surgery would have never suspected I was anything but a slightly picky eater, I had a great time, -
It depends how frequently you experience heartburn. I never found I needed a PPI like Losec or Prilosec. I had my first bout of reflux today, 3 weeks post op. It felt like I was constantly hungry, took 3 tums and it killed the sensation. Tums are just calcium tabs so very safe. You could also try OTC Zantac or Pepcid for as need relief. PPIs need a couple of days to start working properly so they meant for folks with more chronic reflux concerns.

Feeling so sick and in pain
apu replied to littlebearsmom25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Soon...I found every day was exponentially better than the last -
I don't know if this helps but I kind of anticipated the same problems and started being more mindful at work, meditating, trying tai chi and exercising more. I usually go for a 15 minute walk or pull up a YouTube meditation video on my break, I find it really helps deal with the day. It sure beats the heck out what was my previous routine , a large coffee and McDouble. Didnt help that there is a McDonalds 50 feet from my office

Not telling Mom/some others....opinions
apu replied to ProfessorSlim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I only told my spouse and children. My wife had a hard time with my decision, she felt like I blindsided her. That certainly wasn't my intention. I need to make a change for my health. She has since come to appreciate that it was the right decision. I was going to tell my life long best friend as he planted the original seed of WLS when discussing his deteriorating health some time ago. Interestingly when I brought WLS in conversation recently he was quite dismissive I decided at that point he was out of the loop and never mentioned my intentions. -
I also had my sleeve done on August 2nd. I work in medicine, full time primary care practice and emergency work on weekends. I was back to work 6 days post op. My surgeon told me to go back whenever I feel ready. Two weeks out I feel fantastic with easily twice the energy I had pre weight loss. I walked 3 km on my break this morning, will try again this evening. Obviously everyone is different and your mileage may vary.

I am 2 weeks post op and absolutely feel incredible and I am so happy I had the surgery, but I can absolutely empathize with your trepidation. I was second guessing myself right up to the anesthesia hitting me. Try not worry. Good luck .

why did i bother to tell my friends UGH
apu replied to sassy683's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I decided to tell only my wife and children. I learned long ago that "friends" and coworkers have a natural tendency to adversely judge your actions irregardless if they are good or bad and there is no profit in their opinions, so why even bother. I don't need anyone else's validation for the informed choices I make. -
Going back to work Post Op

I'm going back tomorrow which will make 7 days post op. Yesterday felt tired but today much better. Keeping in mind my work is more cerebral than physical. -
So How Many Of You Guys Want To Actually Get Down To A Normal BMI?
apu replied to Proud2BMe's topic in The Guys’ Room
This the same for me, but that said I am still targeting a healthy BMI. I honestly can't remember ever being a normal BMI except when I had poorly controlled Graves disease. I was quite thin but I also looked quite unhealthy according to my wife. The pounds eventually crept up to unacceptable levels once my thyroid was medically destroyed. I am hoping I can visit that BMI again but under healthier circumstances. -
Obviously everyone's mileage will vary somewhat, but I am hopeful everyone will have similar positive experience .

Well had my sleeve with Dr Kelly on August 2 as planned, I am back home now. Very happy with the experience everything went very well. A little sore with mild nausea but no gas pains for the first post op day but I was feeling up to walking to the shops and Sams' club of all places on day 3. I feel like I am nearly 100% now. Was planning to take a week off from work but honestly I think I will go back in a couple of days. Good luck to everyone with their upcoming surgeries.

Getting Nervous As Surgery Day Approaches
apu replied to Togunrinde's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Had my sleeve 2 days ago, I'm sitting in my hospital room waiting to be discharged. I was similarly worried, I'm a little sore but everything turned out fine. Good luck. -
Will be at hotel Lucerna as well. Surgery fast approaching getting a little nervous. Started the the last 3 days of of my 2 week preop, liquids only. I am actually surprised how not hungry I am considering I have been working hard building a deck and finishing various projects. I made an awesome broth with my fresh garden vegetables , added a little chicken bone broth for added protein and had that for lunch and dinner with a clear premier protein drink for breakfast. It was so nice and effortless that I think I will just repeat again for tomorrow. I am amazed that I have lost 21 lbs in the preop phase.

August 2 with Dr Kelly
