Abbreviations
Strivingforbetter replied to James Marusek's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I think of the difference in the spelling between dessert and desert, I remember that if you eat a dessert (more than one "s"), you will get fat because there are double letters or too much of a good thing. The word desert is lacking the extra letter because it's a barren place. Like I said, that's my technique in visualizing the difference. It might not work for others. -

I would also clarify that the word "loose" means the opposite of tight, and the word "lose" means unable to retain or find something. There seems to be some confusion of which word to use when speaking of "losing" weight. Just trying to be helpful here. -

How Common Are Body Odor Problems
Strivingforbetter replied to Dakini's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
That's seriously the biggest bottle of Poo-Pourri I've ever seen in my life (I know it's just an image)! I don't have issues with foul gas or bathroom issues either. -
Coolief radiofrequency ablation
Strivingforbetter replied to CJ Sunshine's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had a total knee replacement two years ago and it was the worst pain. Physical therapy kicked my butt. Now my left knee is going and I shudder to think about going through that surgery again, but I can feel the bone hitting on bone when I pivot or trudge up the stairs. I'm doing everything I can to put it off. Cortisone shots directly into the knee hurt like hell. I can't take NSAIDS now that I've had the DS, so I've just walked with the pain. I guess we're all in the Bad Knee Club. -
How Common Are Body Odor Problems
Strivingforbetter replied to Dakini's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I was the one who started the thread about body fluids. I'm not a big sweater...wait, that sounded weird. I'm not one who has ever sweat that much, and my perspiration hasn't changed since I had the DS 12 weeks ago. Even though I'm not a fan of the way my urine smells, I haven't noticed anything offensive about my underarms. In fact, no one in my family has noticed anything has changed about the way I smell. I wouldn't let the fear of going into ketosis or what you might have heard about perspiration dissuade you from getting the DS. I haven't found it to be true with me and I have a sensitive nose. -
DS vs Gastric Sleeve recovery? Can you tell me how your recoveries compared????
Strivingforbetter replied to Skittlesandrainbows's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I also had the DS on 6/9/17 and was revised from the band. The doctor did it in a few hours. I had three times the amount of pain when I had my band surgery because the port would pull when I bent over until it was healed and the doctor didn't give me any painkillers post-op. He handed my husband a few pills and sent me on my way. With the band, it was impossible to bend over for weeks. Let's put it this way, no one left the house until Mom's shoes were tied. I couldn't do it on my own. With the DS, I was able to bend over and pick things off the floor the first day home from the hospital and I only spent one night in the hospital. I was tired after the DS for the first two weeks, but by the third week, my life got back to normal. The pain was very minimal, at least for me. Now if you want to talk painful surgeries, a total knee replacement takes the prize in my book. I haven't had any experience with just the gastric sleeve part, only the full DS. Since the sleeve is part of the DS, I'm not sure why you've been told the DS would be an easier recovery. The DS is more complicated than the sleeve. Anyway, the recovery wasn't bad at all. -
DS Body Fluid Odor
Strivingforbetter replied to Strivingforbetter's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Hmmm....my carbs run higher than 50 g, so I shouldn't be in ketosis. Lucky me, I get the odor anyway. Maybe it's not ketosis. I've lost every week since my surgery, however. (Now I've probably jinxed myself.) -

CJ, this breaks my heart. There's no humor to be found in the situation. It was a crummy day, and I'm sorry that it happened. Put it in the past and move forward. It looks like you've had the DS surgery. There are good things in store for you. -
DS Body Fluid Odor
Strivingforbetter replied to Strivingforbetter's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I think this is what it is. It reminds me of how water tastes when it comes out of old pipes. Icky. So when I'm in maintenance and increase my carbs it will go away? I'm hoping that this isn't permanent because I'm a DS patient and don't absorb nutrients like other people. -
DS Body Fluid Odor

Ha, ha! Well, I'm glad you did. Now I don't feel alone. I have to constantly throw out my bathroom garbage and replace the liner. I walk in the bathroom, and I can smell it. Why can't anyone else in my family smell it?? It's horrible. I feel like I smell like a grandpa. I guess I should say grandma, but grandpa comes to mind when I smell it. -

Protein Shakes Add Ice! (Post op day 4)
Strivingforbetter replied to mikey701's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Wasn't water the biggest killer post-op? Ugh! Man, that hurt. I could drink most things, but when I sipped water, it felt like knives were in my stomach. I like my protein shakes over ice now too, but there's no way I could do that immediately post-op. -
I had headaches the first month out. Could be caffeine withdrawal. Mine finally went away after a few weeks.

Not feeling like swallowing the food
Strivingforbetter replied to mpolyard's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I felt nauseated after I ate for the first month or so post-op. It made me think everything I ate was disgusting after I finished eating. I think this is your stomach getting used to the new you. -
You'll be fine. That's not a deal breaker.

I haven't had this issue yet. I'm pretty darn regular every day (knock on wood). I just experience horrible gas if I eat something with a high sugar content.

QUESTION FOR MY FELLOW DS FAMILY (MYFITNESSPAL)

I'm curious as to why they have you watching your fat intake when a DS patient only abosrbs 20-30% of the fat they eat. -
Surgery then travel for vacation?
Strivingforbetter replied to ProfessorSlim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the DS surgery in June and three weeks later, I was on the road on vacation with my husband. It was rough eating in restaurants and trying to find things I could eat and not cause a problem. I ate fish, eggs, and cheese frequently. It got really old and I wasted a lot of food because I couldn't eat very much, but i survived and stayed on my plan. When I got back home, I had lost a good amount of weight that week, which before my surgery would never have been possible on a vacation. So, it's doable if you look after yourself and are really selective on the kind of restaurant you select and what you order. I didn't need willpower. My stomach would yell at me when it was time to stop eating or I would get sick if I ate the wrong thing. It was a good teacher. -
I felt chilled the first day home from the hospital and snuggled in a blanket, but then that feeling went away the next day. If he continues to experience these flashes and seems unwell, I would call his doctor's office. They would know better if this is typical.

QUESTION FOR MY FELLOW DS FAMILY (MYFITNESSPAL)
Strivingforbetter replied to Lexington1020's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I use My Fitness Pal and track my carbs and protein intake. I don't pay attention to fat intake since I've had the DS. I keep my calories at 1000 a day because I need some kind of line in the sand, although my doctor has never told me to count calories. He just said to keep my meals 70 percent protein and 30 percent veggies and to stay away from sugar. That's all the advice I received. So far, my weight has dropped steadily every week since my surgery. I wasn't put on a pre-op diet. I work at getting my water intake in all day long and still struggle with that. -
Protein powder question

I thought he was referring to Genepro too. That's the one I was referring to with the lawsuit. Some people still love it though. I've never tried it. -
Protein powder question
Strivingforbetter replied to RDBrown71's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
They're being sued for false advertising, claiming to have more protein in each scoop than they really do.
