Hi! I am interested in success stories and strategies with carb cycling. I found a helpful YouTube video but I still have questions. On high carb days, how many carbs? I have read 2-2-5 g per lb of body weight but that seems like so much! Low carb days- how many carbs? I wish there was a plan I could follow for WLS pts, until I get the hang of it. Thanks!!

Carb cycling

Thanks for your input Russ. I have heard of that book. The video and other resources I found online for WLS pts use the guidelines in Powell’s book but modify it for us. So instead of, for example, 2 cups of non starchy veggies and 1 cup of complex carb on high carb days I have seen some convert it 2 oz veggies and 1 oz carb for WLS (this with the 3 oz protein to equal 6 oz volume per meal, 5 times a day). Maybe I should reach out to my Nut, who I haven’t met with in some time and run this by her. -

Russ D- I am one year postop. That sounds crazy to say. I can’t believe it has been a year! I need to get back on a better regime of poor choices and prep. KCgirl- Cycling sounds very doable and allows for something to look forward to! As I said I found a YouTube video of a sleeve pt who carb cycles. It was very helpful but I still am left scratching my head a bit. -
I had my sleeve surgery was 6/26.. not doing too good

I had terrible nausea and vomiting too. I don't do well with anesthesia. I vomited every hour at least, for the first 38 hours. I also couldn't pee on my own for the first 18 hours. It was really really terrible but I got through it and i feel wonderful now. Hang in there! I'm post op day 13 today. That sickness above lasted until post op day 3. -
How quickly can you go back to work? I was told this procedure could have me back to work in 3 days.

I was sleeved June 21st. Had some issues post op while in hospital. I went back to work on post op day 9. I'm a nurse in OB, I did light duty- kind of. I just stuck with the newborns, and was careful with bending over, reaching and twisting. Those activities were a little uncomfortable. I'm post op day 13 now. And I still don't think I'm ready to push and pull adult patients. I guess it all depends on your job. Good luck! -
June 27th sleever...nervous!

I am 12 days post op. Here is my fluid intake, from what i can recall: Post op day 0, 1, & 2: was very sick while in hospital, only IV fluids. Day 2-3: only able to take small sips, they let me go home on day 3 once I was able to keep down 300ml. Attempted sips of protein. Day 4: intake improved. Watching clock, making sure to sip every 10-15min. Tolerating fluid and protein well. Day 5 -7: intake significantly improved, by day 7 able to get down two 11oz protein shakes a day AND 1.5 liters fluid. It is now day 12 and I have a pretty good routine. I'm able to drink over 2 liters of fluid a day from my bottle plus able to have 1-2 cups of broth during the day, plus able to drink 3-4 protein a day. Still on clear liquid diet. Taking approx 72 mg protein/day Total liquid intake, well over the recommended 64oz. Can probably drink about 4 oz of broth over a 10-15 min period. Down 20 lbs! -
Good luck!

It's interesting to see the different preop and postop requirements and plans. My surgeons group only does a low carb, basically healthy preop "diet" for 2 weeks preop. Practicing getting in fluids, sipping, focusing on protein and small portions. Postop plan is- 2 weeks of clears (which I see many doing 2 weeks preop) along with protein shakes, 60-80mg/day. Then 2 weeks of puréed and full liquids. Then 2 weeks of soft. Then, I'm not sure.

Bring lip balm. Take deep breaths. You've got this! Good luck tomorrow! -
You can do this!!

I know exactly how you feel. I feel the same way. Have had the same wt loss successes and stalls as you. And I have only told a handful of people. I have a few reasons why I didn't tell people preop. But now that I'm postop, people will notice the loss and I'll be ready to tell them then. This is emotionally tough. Hang in there.

June 21st!

My initial date was rescheduled too Bc my heart rate was to low in the preop area. I was devastated. I was in a funk for days, but things are ok now. Think positive, and no smokes!

My first 2 days were terrible too. I vomited more than once an hour. And slept thru just about everything- bladder scans, new IV starts, blood work, rounds, and visitors. Day 3 the pain set in. Good luck to you!
-
Love the meal plans you all posted. I will definitely use some of the suggestions. I have to stay on clears with 3 protein shakes a day, for 2 weeks postop. [emoji17]

I'm a vegetarian. If you need any suggestions, let me know!

Keep sipping. I felt dehydrated the day after I came home. I just kept sipping, even as far as setting my timer on my phone just to make sure I got the fluids, caught up, and didn't have to go back to the hospital. I was super nervous Bc I vomited for more than 36 hours postop, at least once an hour. Horrible!! Good luck!

Post op- how do you know if your hungry?
bright_horizons replied to LaRein's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi. I'm 5 days postop. I had terrible nausea and vomiting postop day 0 -2. Vomiting subsided and pain set in on postop day 2. Never had any gas pains per se. The pain I feel is incisional pain, like a burning or tearing. I have some discomfort in my shoulders when I take a deep breath, but it is subsiding over time. Some morning I wake up feeling hunger possibly? I'm not sure. Sorry to hear of your pain. Feel better! -
I'm June 21st too! I had a terrible postop course. I pretty much vomited every hour for more than 36 hours. But I'm home now, settling in just fine. I think I'm getting the flow of it- protein, fluids, walking. I'm beyond excited to put in the work, and reap the reward. Good luck to you all [emoji5]
