Revision surgery on Friday
Mhy12784 replied to Jenyp8409's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's always a good idea to get this stuff out of the way in advance instead of the morning of surgery. It's probably your body going from withdrawal from sugar caffeine or whatever junk your body was used to before the diet. Preop diets are usually generic and boring so I don't imagine it being a causative factor otherwise -
Purée days - how do you get enough protein?
Mhy12784 replied to ValerieLynn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Basically protein powder baking powder and some kind of milk put into a mug put in a microwave. Where it turns into a cake in a cup sort of. There's tons of different recipes , and a bunch of threads in here. Personally I use a scoop of syntrax matrix, 2 tablespoons coconut flour and a teaspoon of baking powder. Then jsut enough milk to make it thick, and nuke for around 30 seconds. It's a creative way to eat protein powder and have a healthy protein cakey treat. Honestly it's been a game changer for me. I find it more filling than shakes, more enjoyable because I can eat it, and honestly most of the time it's like a treat despite it effectively being a cup of protein powder -
You can try flavors that aren't as sweet. Like peanut butter. Another great recommendation is to mix to your protein shakes with coffee. For example a premier protein and coffee is great and it's not very sweet, the bitterness of the coffee really cuts through any sweetness of the shakes

Managing Insulin Resistance?
Mhy12784 replied to Neri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have an endocrinologist? They should be managing your diabetes. If you're insulin resistant and it's poorly controlled even more so -
Shaving prior to surgery

Mobile app doesn't show gender I guess her legs then? Although PCOS is pretty common in bariatric patients... -
Shaving prior to surgery
Mhy12784 replied to Brewer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm assuming you shaved your beard? They're referring to shaving the surgical area, so unless you accidentally shaved your stomach up to your xiphoid process I think your fine. And honestly nobody cares if you shaved, obviously you shouldn't but it's not a big deal. I've never had a case in my OR canceled because of shaving -

Just to add to this You could mix protein shakes with coffee, or pb2. And then they're not gonna be sweet, so much as coffee like or savory -
Single Incision Gastric Sleeve- August 13th Surgery Date!
Mhy12784 replied to Elle_Woods's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Dr Garber is right across the street from me. How did you decide on him? And I'm not exactly sure what product he uses to do it, but single site often isn't done through only the button. Yes they use only one trocar, but the rest of the surgery is usually done through percutaneous instruments which they just stick through the skin (and then assemble through the other trocar and then unassemble the same way) The instruments are incredibly small and I imagine they leave little to no scar, but they still go through the skin. It's because of their modular nature that they can be so small and not need a trocar -
Purée days - how do you get enough protein?

Protein pudding is fantastic (I used sugar free vanilla and add on 2) Also protein mugcakes were and still are my bread and butter -
That’s something to look forward too!! I believe eggs/scrambled eggs, and airfried seabass were the first two things I ate. I tried ground beef too and it wasn't a good idea, but around the 10 to 12 week mark it improved

I never drank coffee before but around 6 months after surgery I started craving it I mix cold brew coffee concentrate with premier protein Or I mix premier protein with syntrax matrix lattes (which have coffee as it's second main ingredient.)

Around 7 or 8 weeks is when it was a game changer for me I was still eating VERY slow but eating was fine

Any Gastric Sleevers 300 pounds or less before surgery lose 100 pounds afterwards?
Mhy12784 replied to Beta98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm getting close to the 100 pound mark, but I have a feeling that if I hit it ill end up in the hospital. I might have to wrap it up at 90 -
Do what I'm comfortable with or do as surgeon says?
Mhy12784 replied to Unsure133's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How poorly/well is your diabetes controlled? Do you know your ha1c? How young/old are you? If you have bad GERD, or bad diabetes I think the bypass is a no brainer. I didn't want a bypass so I risked it despite having GERD and my surgeon recommending a bypass. But the complications of diabetes are far more scary than the bypass so I would consider that -
Find recipes you enjoy eating. If the liquid diet is forcing yourself to chug down stuff you dont like, youre setting yourself up for failure. You dont like one shake, try another. Then try mixing it with pudding, making icecream, fluff, mugcakes, artificial sweeteners, syrups, with coffee. Theres literally thousands of ways to get creative. If youre not enjoying the things youre eating, its not gonna be pretty

How do I get through the "3 Week stall"
Mhy12784 replied to AdiosAnnie300's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The best way to get through the week 3 stall, is to get to week 4. The numbers can be sporadic . Its going to take you 9 to 15 months to get near your end goal. If you start driving yourself crazy at week 3 its gonna be a bumpy road. Youll have weeks where you lose 0-1 pound and then lose 5 the next. Its just the way it works, as long as youre trending in the right direction and not doing stupid things to sabotage yourself, youll get to where youre going -
I wouldnt say I get grossed out by food But I definitely developed an aversion to food. Theres many days where of my 5 meals 3-4 of them are protein powders/shakes and fiber supplements because I dont feel like eating food. Im hitting all my numbers, blasting through my goals, and have a clean bill of health. And im very happy with what I consume. So I sure dont mind it

Exercise Before Surgery
Mhy12784 replied to Ms Nothing's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Working out before surgery is a great idea however I would use caution depending on how obese and out of shape you are. If you're on the high end of obesity or in terrible shape I would probably just do anything to be active and be content with that. If you're in decent shape and on the lower bmi I think you can push it a little harder, considering you have a solid 2 plus weeks of rest coming your way. I definitely pushed it quite a bit, and even spent like 3 hours in the gym the day before my surgery. -
"10 days notice before bypass"-questions
Mhy12784 replied to FloweryNYC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Chewable multivitamin, chewable calcium, sublingual vitamin b, Tylenol and or liquid Tylenol. Gasx, beano, and possibly lactaid pills are useful too Sugar free ice pops, protein shakes, protein powders, sugar free jello sugar free pudding, flavored sugar free drinks. And a comfy place to sit After a week you should be feeling decent I would experiment with protein recipes now before the surgery, as you won't want to get creative afterwards (mugcakes, protein pudding, protein fluff/ice cream) Take advantage of the week finding creative ways to get protein and fluids in that you can apply the 3 to 5 weeks post op. That's the biggest thing I wish I did, buying all the **** is the easy part -
Endoscopy- is it a must-do?
Mhy12784 replied to Lizaboo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well if you're a self pay it makes a LOT more sense why they wouldn't require an endo. It would drive up the price of the surgery unnecessarily for prospective patients, which makes you as a surgeon less attractive to potential customers. That said if your insurance covers it I think it's generally a good idea for patients to get one, it really only benefits you giving you the most information to make an informed decision -
Endoscopy- is it a must-do?
Mhy12784 replied to Lizaboo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everybody gets an endoscopy preop at my hospital. Sleeve bypass, lap band. I'm not sure why a surgeon would do it on some and not others (I guess they use it to exclude sleeve candidates with bad GERD). At my hospital they also do an endo at the end of every bariatric case So if you get a sleeve or bypass they stick a scope down at the end of the surgery to double check that everything is fine and take another look around. Honestly the endo is nothing compared to the surgery -
Statistically the odds are if your first surgery fails the next surgery will fail. Unless there was a legitimate medical/technique reason that the first surgery field (ie severe GERD after a sleeve)

Odds are you've never had an accurate body fat as it's expensive to have done and not many places do it. And if you're like many of us, loose skin makes doing the classical measurements far more difficult. Personally I think the most accurate easy way of guessing your body fat is to use measuring tape and entering it on one of the online websites.

They're not canceling your surgery for low vitamin d. But it is one of the easiest labs to improve. I was a bit of a dumbass and decided to boost up my vitamin d before surgery to optimize my health, and ended up having my Vitamin D levels sky rocket through the roof, just into the toxic range (honestly even vitamin d toxicity doesn't really do much until you're way way way up there). But of course I was taking incredibly high doses for around 3 months. Obviously talk to a doctor before doing this but you can easily take 30,000 to 50,000 iu of vitamin d a day for a few weeks to boost your levels. You just wouldn't want to do this the week or two before surgery because it effects bleeding (and vitamin d is fat soluble so you can take incredibly high doses and your body won't just pee it out like most other vitamins)

I love matrix and nectar by syntrax. I even mix the nectar with premier frequently
