What to eat before surgery
Mhy12784 replied to afer0841's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unless you're supremely obese one week should be fine. But the general rule of thumb is very low carb for a week or 2, and liquids for 24-48 hours before. But they'll give specific instructions -
More likely is lactose intolerant. You can try whey protein isolates Or you could try any brand/generic lactose intolerant pill which just makes lactose easier to digest. If you have protein products you cant use this is probably the easiest and smartest test. And its not medicine, its more of an over the counter digestive aid/enzyme . https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Fast-Acting-Dairy-Digestive-Dietary-Supplements-12-Ct/16940558?athcpid=16940558&athpgid=athenaItemPage&athcgid=null&athznid=PWVUB&athieid=v0&athstid=CS020&athguid=466001f5-349d94f7-9f235a3c204c9986&athena=true is a generic one from walmart for 2$ A very safe and inexpensive experiment Take 2 of those with a product that previously upset your tummy. If you feel fine afterwards, its an open and shut case of lactose intolerance. And you now know how to treat it.

I honestly eat more (frequently) than I ever have in my life. I dont eat particularly much, but im eating every 2-3 hours all day. Most of the time im hungry, but a decent amount of time im eating because its when im "supposed" to eat. Long as I keep pushing it at the gym I dont mind constantly eating as its all clean. And my entire diets built around protein and fiber, now im increasing complex carbs as well

Milk it while you can It's the golden window to get to levels of leanness you only imagined
-
I mean I'm 9 months out. But my breakfast is a protein mugcake which basically is 50g of protein. Then I have 2 protein bars at work, another 50g. A small meal after work another 25-30g. (eggs, meat, something like that) Dinner is basically lean meat 40 to 50g of protein, and before bed is a protein shake which is another 40 to 50g. Effectively I eat every 2 to 3 hours. Getting at least 20g of protein at each meal, with a few big meals being closer to 50g. If I was heavier I'd be concerned I'm eating so much, but since I'm legit borderline wasting away and trying to pack on muscle, I'm alright with how much I'm eating. As long as I can keep up the hardcore lifting routine and pack on muscle

To purchase or not to purchase?
Mhy12784 replied to Beachladee3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just my 2 cents, but I wouldn't buy anything specifically designed for "bariatric patients" You can get normal generic versions of everything for much cheaper and with a greater variety of flavors. Protein powder, multivitamins, calcium, vitamin b etc. All the bariatric stuff is, is the exact same crap with a substantially higher price tag. I used bariatric protein powders vitamin b multivitamin and calcium at start and realized how obsencely overpriced it was and quickly switched to normal stuff from my favorite supplement stores -
How many cals do you eat at 5-6 Months
Mhy12784 replied to Sleeve_journey_2018_uk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm around 9 months having 1600 to 1800 with 200 to 250g of protein. Carbs are still fairly low, likely around 100g -
I don't know what's considered too much protein, but I've been getting 200 to 250 g a day. 100g doesn't seem extreme by any measure

It is an NSAID. But it is unique as it is less harsh on your stomach than other nsaids. I was prescribed that after my sleeve for that reason

Protein powder mixed with Gatorade/flavored water. Any luck?

Thoughts on air fried sweet potatoes? Is this "healthy"?
Mhy12784 posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm not losing I'm maintaining and trying to add on muscle mass. And eat very little carbs (which hurts my workouts). I love sweet potatoes though, and know they're pretty healthy. The easiest way I've found to cook them is slice them up (usually 2 small ones) and spray them with Pam for like 2 to 3 seconds (I know it says calorie free, but it's still oil) then toss them in an airfryer I estimate this comes to somewhere between 25 to 50 calories of oil. (very likely on the lower end of that calculation) But would you consider this a fairly healthy source of carbohydrates, or am I basically justifying to myself a way to eat French fries? -

Which is rather unfortunate because religion is a bunch of made up mumbo Jumbo. And it's highly unfortunate for nutrition to be so subjective. I mean there's plenty of black and white when it comes to nutrition, but that gray area... -

Well I mean there's surely a scientific basis of whether sweet potatoes are healthy or not. Is it clear, not really... The general gist I'm getting is they're fairly good for you, but I would be better off boiling them rather than baking/air frying them. I'm contemplating boiling then air frying them to see how this turns out -
Seriously why would anyone use a vitamin patch? You can take pills and chewables after surgery just fine, which are actually proven to work and much cheaper. I get that people have crazy beliefs but vitamin patches are stupid honestly

Your husband being asked doesn't sound unreasonable. You on the other hand is just weird. Is your bmi like 80 or something?

Better vegetables I can think of, better carb laden ones though? -
Weird and a shame that beef would cause dumping. What kind are you using? (96/4 84/15 etc) and are you making burgers or something? Mixing it with anything unusual? It sounds very much like dumping, it's just strange that a lean protein would cause it
-
The most unusual stuff that I do regularly. Is protein mugcakes (syntrax protein, coconut flour, baking powder skim milk microwaved) Or premier protein milk shakes (which is basically freezing a premier protein throwing it in a blender with some skim milk Splenda and either sugar free vanilla pudding mix or pb2 powder) Both easy filling very tasty and practically all protein.

This is incorrect. The sleeve is the first half of the Duodenal Switch procedure not the bypass. They are quite different. Let me rephrase that. With a sleeve the first part of the bypass is done, dissection and what not . A patient getting a bypass after a sleeve will typically be easier than a patient just getting a bypass.
-
What surgery you had should be a factor. If its a bypass it could be related to that Could be dumping syndrome Could be lactose intolerance Much less likely (as I dont see how this would be related to surgery) something like celiac disease Could also be bacterial overgrowth (especially if you had a bypass) Lots of stuff related to your surgery that could cause this, all of which should be addressed with your surgical team. Of course its also possible that its entirely unrelated

Then what is the extra 40 calories made up of?

I found a protein shake on Amazon that has 40 grams of protein in each carton
Mhy12784 replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have some in my fridge. I think they taste disgusting, but that's very subjective and to each their own Nutritionally they're very good which is why I bought them in the first place. If you don't mind the taste or the price I think it's a very good shake. Another option is using a RTD shake and mixing it with whey protein isolate. For example for breakfast sometimes I'll take a premier protein shake (vanilla) and add a scoop of syntrax whey protein isolate nectar. This turns my 160 calorie shake into a 260 calorie shake with roughly 55g of protein. And makes it much more filling and helps me get my protein intake. It also opens up a whole host of flavor combinations to keep things interesting and exciting so I don't get bored. I strongly recommend using a shaker bottle or blender if doing this though as rtd protein shakes don't mix as well as milk typically does But I'm also 8 months postop and trying to gain muscle (and not really lose weight) so my goals may be different from someone in the losing phase -
The last few weeks I've been freezing my premier protein shakes, then putting them in a blender with some skim milk, Splenda, and pb2 peanut butter powder. Basically like a milk shake But I think freezing premier shakes then putting them in a blender makes them much thicker and more enjoyable. Definitely a poor man's milkshake, and honestly it's more filling as well. The pb2 is just the icing on the cake but coffee will make it like a frappe too

It's extremely overpriced (I get this is a non issue if you have money), it's significantly higher in calories than most protein shakes, and only 55% of the calories in it are from protein (which is extraordinarily low for a protein shake). I feel like the purpose of using a protein shake in your diet is to have a concentrated source of protein. If a shake is barely over 50% protein, that means the other 50% is pretty much a waste (let's be honest nobody drinks a protein shake to hit their saturated fat requirements or carbs). When I'm drinking shakes (which I do almost everyday) the goal is to get as much protein as possible for as little calories as possible (although sometimes ill add sources of fiber to it). I wouldn't go so far as to call Labrada bad, as it's certainly not bad. But when something like a premier protein shake is less than half the price, and 75% of the calories are from protein, it's no contest. And that's not even comparing them both to whey protein isolate shakes (ie syntrax nectar) that are 90% + calories of protein. I want my protein shakes to be mostly protein. So I can get my fats and carbs from meats, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. "wasting" almost 10g of fat on a protein shake is exactly that a waste to me. Especially if you're in the losing phase and your calories are extremely restricted. That said I keep some protein bars at work for days where I end up working overtime. And the macros for them are even worse than the shakes. But it's not an everyday routine, it's more of a convience for days where the unexpected comes up at work and I can grab and go. -
It sounds like youre pretty much having a sleeve to bypass conversion, and your doctor just wants to call it something that sounds more complicated and intelligent. Having a gastric sleeve is basically the first part of a gastric bypass, so having a bypass after a sleeve is a fairly simple operation. Its possible your surgeon is doing something slightly different, but the bottom line is itll be very similar to having a sleeve > bypass revision
