WLS for a sugar/carb addict and binger?
Yettid posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've had a lifetime of compulsive sugar binging and compulsive carb eating. I'm an all in or all bets are off eater. On plan or off. Donuts for lunch or salad. You get the picture. I'm 46, 5ft tall and 220. I've gain and lost the same 30 pounds dozens of times. I can gain 10# in a month. I'm terrified to get wls and gain it all back or still not be able to control my eating. But in the same sense I feel like it's my only shot to maintain a somewhat normal weight. Help! -

I am in therapy and working on my eating issues. I do hope that this will help me be successful. I'm aware there are no guarantees. I want to gather as much info as possible before I decide. The unknown is terrifying and I'm hoping for a definitive answer where there isn't one .thank you for the info [emoji3] -

WLS for a sugar/carb addict and binger?

I'm unsure what is so confusing about this. I overeat as I'm sure all of us do. I prefer sweets and I will compulsively eat them and crave them. I do not have BED but I do binge eat (per my Dr). As Jess commented, WLS CHANGES a lot more than the size of your stomach. It changes hormones and food tolerances as well as many other things. Of course I know I won't be successful and eat sweets. My question was whether the physiological changes would help the cravings. I'm not saying I should or shouldn't have WLS but please, get you info straight before you make unsolicited medical advice. -
I'm scheduled to see Dr. Gee at MGH. Any experiences to share?

lol Ryan . That made me laugh[emoji6] -
I have not had surgery yet, but I do know about antidepressants. If you stop them, esp cold turkey, it won't be pretty. Discontinuation syndrome is brutal. You will feel crazy, anxious, depressed ten fold. I'll bet your misery is exacerbated by not having your meds. I'd recommend contacting your doctor for liquid meds if you haven't already done that. Or talk to my surgeon or psychiatrist. There are other ways to absorb medications other than orally[emoji15]. Hang in there you feel better I!

I'm aware of that (sadly;). I wonder if having the sleeve will be a tool that will help in making better choices. Because clearly if I could do that now I wouldn't obese. -

Thanks for the info. I guess the question is, in a few years, Will the sleeve be enough to help you say no to bad foods, forever. I've lost 80lbs before and kept it off for 3 years. Only to gain it all back😩 -

It's interesting to hear from veteran wls and newbies alike. With all due respect, it's easy to say "I am committed indefinitely" to a certain way of eating when your just a few months out. I'm trying to see the big picture for my lifetime. Thanks all. -

That is exactly my sentiment. If I could stop eating with therapy or diet, why would I need surgery ? Thanks Jess, you get me. Lol -

Great info. Thanks! I'm not sure I have Binge eating disorders but I can eat a pound of chocolate or half tub of ice cream. And donuts, ugh 3 or 4!😳 -

That's what I'm afraid of. My hope is not craving them as much or wanting to binge. Because I truly don't know how to stop. I've tried everything. -

Thanks all! Essentially, I guess the question is, will wls help me stop binging and eating sugar ? I've tried everything else this far and I go back to it:(
