  1. Just like smokers are addicted to nicotene, or alcholics to booze, we are addicted to food. Just like smokers use a nicotene patch, or gum or Chatix as a "Tool" to help them quit, or Alcholics use a drug to help them get off booze, we are not much different than any other addics. The band, along with education and support gives us the best chance to change our lives, and get off our addiction. Still, we have to want to make the changes, and have the dedication to do it.

I have a question about eating

Oh I see. Thanks for explaining. As for me, I don't really snack between meals, but my meals are rather large. So I hope this would be a perfect fit for me then.

    GP derailed me today!

Still holding on to a small piece of hope he'll change his mind. If not, he's fired, and I'll find a new GP. Was hoping he would call today, but don't look like it. I'll give him till tommorow, and after work if he hasn't called I'll stop by the office, and get my records.

    GP derailed me today!

It was actually my ENT that ordered the sleep study. Still waiting for the call back. I'm just about ready to walk in to the docs office and say, can I have my records please, and be done with it.

I have a question about eating

The band does not keep you from eating too much? But I thought with restriction, you cannot eat as much. I don't understand.

    GP derailed me today!

I called and left my PCP and aske for him to call me back. I'm going to insist on approval, or go to another doc. I'm going to change docs no matter what now, but in the intrest of time, I hope he will do the approval, and get me on my way. We shall see...

    GP derailed me today!

On my quest to find another GP. On top of denying me, he prescibed Zoloft, and when I looked up the side effects, number one was weight gain!! Now I don't really feel depressed accept being overweight. So how is putting on more weight going to make me feel? I threw my prescription in the trash! Just hope I don't have to do another 6 months with another doc!

    Smoking?

Hi, I'm a ex smoker of over two years. Now I'm a smoking cessation facilitator for the American Lung Association in my spare time. While there is no right way to quit, just your way. The method of slowly cutting back is not very successful. Less than 2% using this step down method are smoke free after a year. I suggest going to this site. A lot of great informaion and support just likie here. Smoking Cessation Get educated (power is knowlege) make a quit plan, then set a date. You'll love the new you, thin and smoke free. Don't that sound great! Good luck, and keep up posted.

    Will I get approved?

They have done surgery as young as 12 from what I've heard. I'm sure you could if you want to. Find a seminar in your area, or talk it over with your peronal doctor, as long as it's not mine, he didn't approve me

8 months post op...I am now an athlete. :)

Congrats Kago, I too have a dream of doing a tri. I set that goal after I quit smoking. I was well on my way then I don't know what happened. Now 60 lbs later it seems so distant, and after getting shot down by my GP for the surgery I'm kind of at an impass. It may be 6 mo. or even longer before I can get to schedule a date. My insurance don't even require anything but a BMI over 40, or over 35 with a comorbid. It's the lap doc that requires the GP approval and the 6 months, which I have with my original GP. If I go to a new one, then I bet I have to do the 6 months again! Congrats again, and maybe I'll catch up to you one day!

Kind of down in the dumps

Great to hear. Sometimes (who am I kidding) I mean most of the time, us men are slow at accepting reality. I didn't even think we were really having a baby till we saw the ultra sound, then reality sunk in! Maybe it just took some time for it to sink in. But there's gonna be some big changes coming, I agree, communicating will be the key here.

Lap Band Journey Came to Screeching Halt Today!

Congrats BigU, you've done great, and I know it's been alot of work. I'm down, but not out. I'm pretty persistant when it's something I really want. I'm realizing there is an emotional side to my eating too. When I thought I was on the road to being banded, I started to get excited, and began to eat better, started going to the gym, and once I hit got shot down I kinda gave up and have been horrible the last couple days. Thanks for the support, and keep up the great work.

    GP derailed me today!

Finally, after two days of waiting and no call back, I decided to call the lap bad doc back, and was told that he would not do the surgery with out my GP being on board even though my insurance does not require it. Now I have to find another GP that will give the ok. Just another hurdle to over come. Not the end of the world but what a pain.

Kind of down in the dumps

Maybe your husband is scared of losing you? Perhaps he's even enabling you for fear, or even control. Kind of like a spouse of a alcholic. Sometimes they enable their partners to continue their addiction because that makes them depend on them, and gives them control. If they give up that control, there's a fear they will no longer need them. Not saying this is the case, but it's a angle you might want to look at. I think maybe his negativity spawns from other issues. Perhaps a family or marriage counsler would be good to talk too.

Lap Band Journey Came to Screeching Halt Today!

I think no matter what happens, I'm going to find a new PCP, it's just hard when you've been with one for a long time, but it's my health. This is just something we don't see eye to eye on.

    GP derailed me today!

Ok, called my band doc today, and talked to the assistant. Told them that my PCP will not give me the recomendation, but my insurance does not require it. She told me that the doc usually prefers that the PCP be onboard with it, but she'll talk to my lap band doc and call me back. So now my fate is in his hands. Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

    Lapband or Bypass?

Hi Virginia, I think most people here will tell you the Lap band. Most docs will probably push toward the bypass. As I'm sure you already know the bypass will make you lose weight faster, and keep it off. Also, if you have an addiction to sweets, the by pass would put a stop to that immediately, or a least after the first time you eat sweets. IMHO, I would go with the bypass. Which ever way you choose, good luck.

    GP derailed me today!

I've been with him about 10 years. He's knows the struggles I've gone through, and the weight I put on after smoking and the stuggles of trying different ways to lose weight. I would rather to this with my doc, but I'll do it without him if need be.

Lap Band Journey Came to Screeching Halt Today!

The insurance apporval was the very first thing I (and the lap band doc) checked on before starting the process. I called and they said no pre requisions what so ever other than what I stated. After reading the lap docs letter to my GP it seemed clear he required the approval. I'll know more tommorow when I call.

Lap Band Journey Came to Screeching Halt Today!

I think so, I saw the letter he sent to my docs office and the requirement from the surgeons office requred some medical test for pre op, and a writtng letter endosing the surgerty which obviously my doc refused to do.

    GP derailed me today!

Ya, I'm pretty down about it tonight. I'm glad I did the sleep study, and got on a cpap, I love to sleep now. But I'll call the doc tommorow to see if anything can be done, but it don't look good.
