Just Starting Out/using CPAP First
tabula replied to Meguone's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If it were me, I'd figure out how to self pay and get it done in Mexico. Seems like they're becoming the world's expert and is much more cost effective than in the US. Also, there are a lot of good information on here and out there about options in Mexico. I couldn't lose weight without the surgery so I saved until I had enough to get started, which is helping me be EXTRA focused on the success as it literally costs me every month. I wish you luck. PS. I have severe sleep apnea and have used my cpap every night for over 3 years, can't imagine not having it but it took 6 months to get used to it and a year before I used it every night. Traveling with it sucks though. -
Newbie/Struggling to eat
tabula replied to Aaralyn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein and water are clearly the most important. I don't know any tricks and I felt similar and just forced myself to do it (albeit very slowly). Your appetite picks up but I still don't have any hunger (thank god). I'd set a schedule and just commit to having X by Y. Good luck -
Why is this so hard?!?
tabula replied to Shesacleverone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is tough in the beginning I think as there is no way to really mentally prepare for your life change, which is huge. I found my "head hunger" was easier to control the further out I got. Get a lot of liquid protein, that should fill you up. Try Isopure, lots of protein. I still get confusion on some of my stomach discomfort from, did I eat too much, something that didn't feel right or am I still hungry? Just go slow and navigate this new journey. It's not easy but looks like you've already had a great start, focus on the weight loss and not what you "can't have", once I hit 50 lbs lost and my clothes were too big for me, i didn't care what I couldn't have and as you move through the phases you love the new foods, like cheese and eggs and avocados. Everyone is different, need to find what works for you. Good luck and hang in there, it gets easier. -
Agreed with calling your doc. I don't feel that I've heard/seen that issue. I'm about at the same point and am doing fine with regular food. Make sure you're still doing the little bites, I'm told the size of my thumbnail and to chew it very good 20 - 30 times and to go slow. Takes a while for your stomach to tell your brain it's full. Generally a meal is taking me 30 min to an hour to eat. If I'm not paying attention and eat it in 15 mins, I find out I ate too much too quick and get stomach pains but no nausea yet.

I was surprised at how long the gas in my body stayed around, I want to say it was a week. It was uncomfortable but not painful, just kept moving around and drank lots of water. Sorry that's not very helpful.

Did I Stretch My Stomach Back Out????
tabula replied to kellkizzle21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's really a weird sensation. Water started to get easier and easier to get it in without having to take little sips. I find when there is no food in my stomach I can drink quite a bit of water, No gulps but regular drinks. I drink a protein drink with out the wait time before or after I've had water. However, now that I'm eating regular food, i do have to wait the 30mins to an hour after eating or it does hurt. My guess, liquid passes through with out any substance. -
I've literally lived off the premieres! Haven't found anything that great (high protein, low carb, low cal). They do have different flavors, my favorite is vanilla and i just ordered the banana. I assume you know about Isopure, which has 40 grams but they don't taste great, I dilute with water. Good luck!

It was after clear liquid stage for me, so on day 8. I take the Celebrate vitamins, calcium chews (berry is the best) and the chewable multi with iron, however, they were fine before but now burn my throat and I cringe when i take them. If I didn't by 120 I'd already switch to a pill form.
-
Shaving the belly was weird for me too. It's mostly grown back now. First week was also a lot of discomfort, it's an interesting process and definitely go slow and you feel your way through it. Some days were better than other. now I feel great!

Starting multivitamin post sleeve week 3
tabula replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the celebrate chewable with iron. It burns my throat now, not sure what's up with that, didn't below but they're good. Just remember to have a 2 hour gap between your multi with iron and your calcium supplements as iron blocks the absorption of the calcium. I prefer the pill and will be going back to it. -
I felt similarly, amazing how much faster you recovery further on, it wasn't until like week 6 that's was like I feel normal now.

Any tips/tricks for getting all that water in?
tabula replied to Honeypenny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a 64oz bottle in my hand constantly which reminds me to take a drink and once I'm done I'm done. I get the sugar free water flavor enhancers and that helps change it up. Good luck! -
Hurting on day 3
tabula replied to Miranda.Oil.Nurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have any concern I'd definitely call your doctor. I assume you're taking your pain medication? There's a lot of discomfort but with meds shouldn't be intolerable pain, again I'd consult your physician. Important to get that water down in many many many small sips. Also, try to move around, helps get the gas in your system out. I was on a liquid diet the first week, so wasn't "eating" anything. Seems like everyone's recovery is very different. I able to get off pain meds after 3 days but there is definitely discomfort. -
I hate my scale.... its broken... or I am
tabula replied to AmandaTherese's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can sympathize, I'm currently in a stall and feel it's going to be a longer one. I just started working out and haven't adjusted my caloric intake for it. I'm hoping it's because I'm not eating enough, consistent at eating 900 cals but probably burning an extra 300 from exercise. Going to try to go up to 1,200 and see what happens. Good luck, keep going, I'm sure it'll move again, so many people on here talk about stalls at different points in their journey. Also, sounds like you're doing well, my guess is your scale is broken -
Am I loosing Weight to quickly?
tabula replied to Tiki Toli's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As long as you're following your surgeon's plan I'd think you'd be good, I lost 14 lbs the first week so I think everyone is just different. -
Gas, bloating, etc. + any traveling for the surgery?
tabula replied to kasemcd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have nausea or diarrhea either. There is "gas" pain initially but it's not typical, feels like a stomach ache but agree with the walk walk walk. Didn't have a catheter either. I flew 2 weeks later and was fine. -
I'm not a runner so take this advice for what it's worth but if it were me and I was training for a half marathon and wasn't extremely over weight then I would also try to introduce some calorie reduction with my training and see how much weight I can lose without (or before) the surgery. Trust me, I know how hard it is to lose weight and I couldn't have done it without the surgery and I'm loving my post-sleeve life. Regarding recover, everyone is different so there is no good standard but at 7 weeks out, I'm not ready to get back to a full intense workout regime yet. Either way, I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

Need Help With Hesitation Before Surgery
tabula replied to Redo2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think it'd be weird if you didn't have doubts. Surgery is a big deal and shouldn't be decided lightly. For me, it was really my last option, the trajectory I was on was going to put me at significant medical risks, so I looked at the pros vs cons and realized the pros were more than worth it. I was worried because my life is work and food and for me this takes a great deal of satisfaction out from eating, however, there is still enjoyment from a sugar free jello and other foods I took for granted. Nearly 7-weeks out, I couldn't be happy with how I feel and I've been recommending it to all my obese friends who have struggled with their weight their entire lives. It's a legit game changer. -
That's awesome, feels good doesn't it. I have the same feelings about watching people eat and I have to catch myself and realize without my WLS, I'd being doing the same thing! I was at D&B and my sister's meal was 1,500 cals and I'm like that'd take me two days to eat!!! Fortunately, I don't really have any cravings and hope it stays that way for a long time. Right now some Deli Turkey and Cottage Cheese gets me through the day Congrats!

Are you getting enough calories? Definitely track diet and exercise and get enough nutrition. Don't worry about a couple lbs over a short time period, just stick with plan, it works!

3 hr flight 2 weeks after surgery
tabula replied to LifesJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I flew from Dallas to San Francisco 2 weeks after surgery and was fine. I drank a protein shake before I went through security and then bought a bottle of water before I boarded the plan. Just get up a few times and walk the aisle. I had no problems what's so ever and for the first time in a long time I didn't need an extender #howbowdah -
Does it hurt to vomit after surgery?
tabula replied to TooneyNinosMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't really have nausea but they give you a TON of drugs to prevent it. Other than the patch I didn't take any of it. Probably depends by person. I was also off pain meds a few days after surgery but still a lot of discomfort, which I understand is the gas in your body still. Make sure to move around a lot (don't exert yourself) to get the gas out and you'll feel better. I was and am afraid of vomiting because of the surgery so I follow the guideline as much as possible, don't advance too soon, eat slow, chew chew chew. Basically go slow with everything! I ate too fast once and my body wanted to puke but I wouldn't let it, won't do that again. I've found it to be a big learning process and that it is literally different for everyone. This forum is awesome though. When in doubt ask your medical team. I'm sure you'll do great, Good Luck! Best decision ever! -
I understand where you're coming from and don't blame you for wanting your child to lose her weight naturally. Surgery is a big deal and it's not 100% solution, it's a tool to help you get healthy. When I was getting my surgery, it was 50/50 from people saying GREAT vs ARE YOU SURE? I've struggled with my weight since college and yo-yo dieting is not good on your body or emotions. The older and bigger you get the harder it is to get off. My insurance didn't cover and I paid out of pocket which for me makes me even more determined to lose 100% and keep it off. She'll need the support to be successful and as been mentioned in prior posts, look at the statistics of obesity and mortality, the young more obese you are the worse off you are. I too which I had done this in my 20s vs 30s. Remember it's a tool to weight loss, not a magic bullet. I think most of us are here because we couldn't do it without a tool like this. So you know this is the best decision I've ever made and am extremely happy.

The scale hasn't went down in 3 days [emoji57]
tabula replied to Afry's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Absolutely, I was dropping lbs like it was my job then for like 3 days nothing and I was so upset. I just stuck with the program and weighed 2 days later and I had dropped 4lbs. I wouldn't consider 3 days a stall, but sounds like stalls do happen and it's just a part of the process. As you progress clearly important to follow the guidelines and track your consumption. I think you'll power through, don't be discouraged. I weigh every 3 or 4 days so I see bigger movements and weigh at the exact time everyday so it's comparable. After a few weeks of getting used to everything I couldn't be happier, total.game.changer! Good luck! -
A month after op my incisions seemed to be mostly healed, I had the glue and it had mostly come off. I'd call your surgeon office to check, that's what they are there for.
