  1. Also want to mention my close friend who I am doing this journey with has Medicaid as well. Has no comorbidities and has a BMI over 40. She hasn't had any issues thus far with the coordinator saying she isn't qualified. I will let you know as it gets closer though. She's due for her RNY surgery on October 22nd.
  2. You should still be eligible and approved then, just having a 40 BMI is enough to qualify you for bariatric surgery. Maybe you should try a different bariatric team. Seems the coordinator isn't taking in your best interest. Your team is supposed to be on YOUR side.
  3. Did you lose too much weight? I know with certain insurances and surgeons they want you to do a pre-op diet of about 6 months. If you lose too much (go under 40 BMI) during the 6 months then insurance might not approve you. Some insurance companies go by your start weight, but others want your whole journeys worth.

    Smoking?

I don't think they test for it. But I'm sure it'll be a harder surgery to perform if you have a fatty liver.

    Scared.

You should go right away. Your pouch could be bleeding. Not trying to scare you but someone else posted about bleeding and not being able to eat and that's what she found out at the hospital.

    Any vegetarians or vegans?

I haven't transitioned yet, but I'm curious and would like to follow any vegetarian or vegan food blogs for bypass patients.

    Smoking?

Rocky80, you should stop drinking alcohol for at least 2 weeks before surgery. Leading up to surgery day you need to be shrinking your liver, alcohol doesn't help with that.

    Smoking?

If I had your doctor then I'd have to be at 0mg by now. I wish my doctor told me but he didn't say anything about nicotine levels in the vape all he talked about was the fact it's better than a cigarette. I need to get more juice soon, maybe I'll tough it up and go straight down to 0mg.

    Input needed

That's exactly what's happening with me! I'm halfway through the 6 month supervised, and have other patients in the waiting room tell me I'm not big enough, a few other family members say it too. I told them all "I'm not waiting until it's too late to get to where I want to be" .. if you're BMI is 40 then you're big enough. I'm 5'3' 237lb

    Smoking?

I quit smoking cigarettes a week ago. On my initial consult with a surgeon in May, he told me to quit. I asked about the e-cigarette (vaping) and he told me it was fine, it's the cigarettes he worries about and cigarettes will show up way more nicotine on the breath test than an e-cig will. The nurse also told me they have a patient that vapes like a fiend and always has it in her mouth. The one thing I am wondering now is do any of you vape? If so, what nicotine level are you using? Mine is 18mg and I'm not sure if that's too high. I am currently waiting for my surgery date since I had my 3rd weight check 7 days ago on Friday so I'm waiting for my next appointment to ask my doctor in more depth.

    NYS Disability Insurance

According to NYS disability, you need to be employed by a covered employer for at least 4 consecutive weeks to be covered by disability insurance. Has anyone here been approved or denied disability insurance for your post op recovery period?

    Pre-surgery diet sheet

I just looked up Optifast. Did you lose weight from being on that, it would look like I'd go right under 40 on a meal replacement that said it was for a "serious solution for weight loss" lol
  13. I need clarity if anyone has been through this type of thing before. I went in for my 2nd weight check and the nurse asked if I was following the yellow sheet "food/diet guidelines" including cutting out liquid calories etc. anyways, I told her the surgeon didn't tell me I had to, we just talked briefly and he said to come in for 3 weight checks then they'll start scheduling procedures and actual appointments for the duration (we more-so talked about me going back to college in the future). He said NOTHING about following the yellow sheet. The nurse proceeded to tell me that the only reason Someone wouldn't have to follow it is if They are too close to 40 BMI with no comorbidity. I am about 42 BMI, no comorbidity. Has anyone "not" had to follow the before surgery diet? Why and what was your BMI? I'm wondering if I'm one of those people who don't need to follow it. Obviously I will ask my doctor but it's after hours now and I'm too curious about this and if anyone of you were/are in the same boat. Thanks!

    Sleeve or Bypass

Ive seen two different surgeons. im currently trying to quit smoking, with success, im down to 1-2 smokes a day. anyways, one surgeon said the sleeve would be good for me if i continued smoking, and that i could keep smoking after surgery. they barely tried talking me into quitting, they were just going with the current circumstances. the other surgeon pushes RNY on patients and wont operate on anyone who is a smoker. I've also heard the sleeve is more likely to cause bleeding. The RNY is a newer surgery and is basically a step up from the sleeve, and is more advanced. you lose more weight on the RNY. The sleeve has been around longer, and both types of surgeries are successful. just a few things ive heard. dont take my word on it though, im sure there are way more knowedgable people on here who can give their input. I'd definitely google "sleeve vs roux-en-y" in your search bar and see what medical professionals or reviews have to say if youre curious.
  15. Congrats and well wishes on your surgery today!
