Long term use of nsaids can cause stomach issues even for non surgical people. I had no nsaids immediately after surgery when healing. My doctor recommended avoiding due to the potential to irritate the stomach. However I've use it off short term acute issues. if she has a chronic condition the surgeon should be able to identify an alternative.

Had my surgery!!
Lannie replied to Lifechanger2137's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! Now you can switch your profile status to post op! -
Sent Rex nectar protein powder- they make single serve portions I can drop in a water bottle. The lemonade flavor is pretty good. Hummus, Hard boiled eggs and cheese sticks are regulars for me. Put in a small lunch bag with an ice pack and it's good for several hours. Doesn't need to be cold...just not hot. In the US we refrigerate a lot we don't need to...eggs and cheese will be ok a lot longer than you think.

No. Surgical staples won't set it off

Did doctor office call to check on you?
Lannie replied to cindyRH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No. I was told to call if I had issues. Dr gives his patients his personal cell if we have concerns. I've had several surgeries and have never had them call me. This is the first time anyone gave me a personal number. -
Hummus and refried beans were on my soft food stage. I did a lot of eggs.

Low calories and protein during first post-op weeks
Lannie replied to temkins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your body needs calories and protein to heal. I would suggest trying other types of protein powder. Isopure makes a decent unsweetened one. Syntrex nectar also mixes with water to be a more juice consistency rather than milk based. I like the lemonade flavor....sweet but not too sweet. -
Have to attend a wedding 4weeks post op
Lannie replied to sjack's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to attend a formal dinner/ fundraiser for works 2 weeks post op. I was liquid only at the time. I had a shake on the way there. Then during dinner, I stepped away for about 20 mins. It was easier to excuse myself rather than sit at a table and have to explain why I didn't touch the food. Return in time for the festivities. No one noticed as they were all too busy socializing. Good luck -
Decaffeinated Bev after surgery - Will caffeinated iced tea slow weight loss?
Lannie replied to Angel11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor allowed caffeine at 3 weeks. Caffeine is a diuretic and he wanted to ensure that I avoid dehydrated In the first few weeks. I still limit my caffeine intake. This is a personal decision, as I was highly addicted. Once I got it out of my system, I'm careful bc it can be a trigger for me. -
I'm about 4 months post op. No hair loss but my nails are getting thin. Any suggested supplements? (I'm hitting my protein goals - will work on increasing but hitting the minimum required by my doc)

Its good to know that its probably temporary. Will work on increasing my protein. If it gets really bad, I'll try the biotin. Thanks.

Anti-inflammatories after surgery and weight loss
Lannie replied to bridget1015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor said to avoid NSAIDs for the immediate post-op recovery. He would prefer that they not be used due to potential for irritation, however I was cleared for occasion usage. I'm only a few months post-op, so I'm not sure I can help with the long term weight loss question. My suggestion would be to go back to basics and make sure you are getting your required protein and water. Are you still weighing & measuring food? Is it possible that your portion sizes have increased without you realizing it? Does your surgical center have a dietitian you could work with? -
I ruled out the lapband for a couple of reasons high maintenance requiring routines fills, it take a bit to "dial in" the right amount i didn't like the idea of a foreign object, risk of slippage and deterioration. older procedure; I choose the sleeve because provides restriction to promote weigh loss hormonal change with removal of stomach (I believe this will be key for long term success.) low maintenance - this will become my new normal and I won't have to constantly managing the tool As with all surgery, regain is possible if you don't follow the rules of the tool. People regain with band, sleeve, and bypass. All depends on making lifelong changes. I'm only a few months out so I can't speak from personal experience long term. For me, the sleeve was the best option. Good luck on your research.

Are you getting your pain meds?
Lannie replied to celticNgel's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Many states have implemented a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) where pharmacists & doctors have to upload all narcotic prescriptions. It is a centralized system so they can see if you are doctor shopping or going to multiple pharmacies. The idea is that it will help reduce opioid abuse. These systems have been in place in many states for a number of year. So that alone should not be the issue. Perhaps there was some time of new procedure / crackdown with your state that is prompting pharmacies to tighten their procedures. All of that being said - if you have a legitimate prescription it should be filled. -
Working out and weightloss
Lannie replied to QueenTiff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just started running again and noticed my appetite increased. Talked to my NUT, she said the appetite increase is to be expected. As loans as I follow the rules (protein first), I'll still be in a deficit and will lose. The rate of loss may decrease but the benefits of exercise is worth it for me. So far it hasn't affected my weight... but I s only been a few weeks. -
My target was 64oz immediately after surgery. I didn't hit it on day 1, but have ever since day 2. Just keep taking small sips the entire time you are awake. Sometimes it felt like I was forcing myself to drink, but dehydration wasn't something I wanted to risk. Each day it got easier. I used a measured water bottle so I knew how much I had left.

Surgery yesterday -- what have I done?
Lannie replied to Aginn10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Recovery is uncomfortable but you should not have excruciating pain. The pain should be tolerable when managed with the appropriate medications. Is the pain managed with the Vicodin? Do you get any relief? It may be that you body doesn't respond well to that med. You may respond better to Oxy or Dilaudid. You surgeon may be able to prescribe something else. -
How did you choose your goal weight?
Lannie replied to ChaosUnlimited's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I need to lose 130 according to bmi charts. My doctor thought the high range on bmi would be too low for my frame. We agreed to target 100 lb loss then reassess. when I lose 100' I will be the smallest I've been in over 20 yrs. I'm not going to obsess about the last 30. Just see where my body decides to settle and I can maintain comfortably. -
I would discuss with the surgeon. I would consider it like any other medication. I want the surgeon knowing exactly what's going on in my body. I would hope he wouldn't refus to treat...but at least you'd know sooner than later.

How long before you wore jeans etc
Lannie replied to Aginn10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to wear soft waist pants at about a week - yoga pants, dress pants. I had 2 incisions right at my waistline, jeans just rubbed on it wrong, so it was uncomfortable to wear jeans more than a few hours at a time. By 3 weeks, I was able to wear normally. -
I think I overdid it today?
Lannie replied to Stephanie12579's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Were you just walking? No lifting, twisting, etc. If you were just walking it is probably OK. If you have a fever or it doesn't subside in a reasonable amount of time, call you doctor. I was cleared to swim at 3 weeks. The first time back I felt great but ached on the left side for several hours afterward. My doctor told me before that I may experience "popping" or "stretching" but that was normal so not to panic. -
7 days post op... concern
Lannie replied to anewme17's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will not be able to stretch the stomach with liquids. 11oz in an hour isn't too much - that is less than 2oz every 10 mins. Liquids will drain quickly from the stomach - so it really is a matter of what is comfortable. -
In the first few weeks I tried to do 30 more mins. It was often broken into 10 min segments. I really could do more until I added solids. at 3 months post op I'm doing 3 miles/ 60 min. take you r time and listen to your body. Your energy level will dictate what you can do.

For the most part, no one seems to notice what I order or how much I eat. As long as I don't make a big deal out of it, no one else seems to care. Appetizers or "side orders" are a go to. Several places will add on to an entree orders. For example, my husband will order a steak & shrimp combo...I get the shrimp skewer and everyone's happy.

Will I ever be able to eat normally again?
Lannie replied to Phobia42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon said that long term I would eat approx 1200 - 1500 daily. That is within the "normal" guideline for a woman my height (5'5). Of course that is an average range so the actual for maintenance will depend on activity level, etc. 1200 for males of your height sounds low. I'm at 12 weeks post op, so it will be a long time before I'm up to that calorie count. So I can speak from experience
