  1. They just let me know for sure that my date is 7/13 (was going to be 7/10). I used to have a lapband. Reason for the change is cuz my surgeon, Dr Nair, wants his partner Dr Boulay as the assist rather than the surgery PA. She said he & Dr Boulanger do this whenever it's a former bandster in case there's extra scar tissue when they get in. If there is, he'll have to convert it to open rather than lap. I'm sure praying that won't be the case.
  2. Good for you on the pre-op weight loss! You're on a great path!

    esophageal dysmotility

Hey RainyFriday, I'm also preop and the upper GI reflected the same thing. Ultimately it lead to an endoscopy with a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus due to pretty bad reflux/gerd that I'd had for at least a year a few years back. By the time they did the scope, I had no idea I still had acid reflux. They said it was called "silent GERD". I've had a bad cough for over a year after pneumonia & my PCP just figured it was my asthma that we couldn't get under control. Have you had bouts of acid reflux? Any coughing? Ever find yourself briefly kind of choking in your own saliva? If answer is no, then that's a good thing! If yes, then no worries, because its treatable. All that being said, the gastro who did the scope advised I need to stay on Protonix for next few years & had to stop taking anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) immediately (which we have to do for our WLS surgery anyhow). My surgery is set for early July, so now it's just prep time and continued pre-op weight loss until it's time for the pre-op diet. Hope this helps ease your nerves.

    Not hungry, worried about protein

Hi Blondie66, Quick question. Where do you get your premier protein shakes? Are they in stores? Or just online?
  8. Your situation sounds just like mine. I was banded in 2010 & did fantastic. 3.5 years later, it slipped big-time. They did an unfill for a few weeks & then slowly started adding again. Soon the coughing began and then the aspirations at night. Then abdominal pain started. I quit going to the doctor because I knew they'd take it out. Finally had no choice. My insurance would not cover conversion. One thing has led to another. My insurance carrier changed. I've gone back to my original surgeon (who like yours will no longer do lap bands) & I'll be having bypass in July. It is scary. That's one of the reasons I did the band instead. I've come to a point where it is scarier for me if I don't do it. Now I'm more excited than scared. One thing to remember is that you can start the process and stop it at any time if you change your mind. The closer I get & the more I learn, the better I feel about the decision. Hope it helps to know this. Whether or not you convert to RNY, please have the band removed if it continued to cause the problems you listed. Your body is sending you a message. I ignored mine for to long and have done permanent damage because of my own stubbornness.
  9. That's funny. I'm going to remember the "Lobotomy" response. My my best friend is at my work too & she knows. So does one other friend who sits in my area cuz she's super supportive and very private. That's it for now until I decide otherwise.
  10. Mine will be in July too! Was set for 7/10, but they called the other day. Moving it to either Thursday, 7/6 or Thursday, 7/13. Our WLS center here can do earlier, but I needed to book out to Mel's sure I have coverage at work. Glad there are already others in July! Oh, I'm from Salem OR.

    Gastric bypass/breast reduction

Good question. Doubt they'd agree to do them in the same surgery. For one thing, they would not want you under anesthesia that long. WLS would do the bypass and then a plastic surgeon would need to be ready to do the breast reduction. Another reason is what you already noted - they'll want you to wait until you've reached your new self for awhile. If insurance pays, they may want you to wait till you've been at stable weight for about a year. It'll be worth the wait!

I lost my band / friend today

I'm so sorry. My band and I had to part ways in 2014. I'd had my little buddy for four years. Hang in there!
  13. You're doing awesome! All I can think of is that he has some unresolved personal issues that he's deflecting back on you. That is not right. Whether we're bigger or smaller, our spouses should be attracted to who we are in the inside. My husband & I were standing up for our friends at their wedding last year, the minister told everyone a story about a couple where one person wanted to lose weight for the other to be more attractive for to them. She lost the weight. Then regained & felt like she let him down. The spouse told them they fell in love with who the are, not their shell. There are likely a lot of things your husband needs to work out in his head. I've not read the rest of the threads yet to see if he pulled his head out of his who-who, but I sure hope he did or does soon!
  14. You've gone thru your medical workup & doc had said you're good to go. Yay! When you get super nervous, try to think of all cool things about your new body. You'll be healthier. Less joint pain if you have it now, sleep better, more active & not shopping for plus size clothes is pretty good too. Is there anything you've wanted to do right now that you've not done due to your weight? Horseback riding? Tropical vacation? Hang gliding? Zip lining? When you get nervous, maybe try to visualize that? Even taking a walk at a faster pace without being out of breath is nice to think about. My doc says he's more concerned about people who are not even a little nervous before surgery.

    Not getting full, no energy

All of the above posts are right. Things that contribute to exhaustion are not getting enough fluids, not getting enough protein, and a HUGE contributor is you just had major surgery a few weeks ago. Sleep helps the body heal. Healing is exhausting. Plus, the anesthesia from the surgery can knock a person on their butt for up to a month. If you're nervous, call your doc or your NUT. Sometimes just talking it thru with them can help.
  16. Good luck! Very excited for you!
  17. I'm with RavensGirl. Your boss will be crossing a legal line if he pushes you for details on your surgery. The short term disability paperwork should go straight to that insurance company. FMLA paperwork goes straight to your HR department if you have one. Obesity was formally declared a disease a few years ago & all short term disability carriers will cover if. For your STD paperwork, you'll want to give that to your doc to complete & submit about a month before surgery. For the FMLA paperwork? Federally, you give it to the doc about two weeks pre-op. Oregon also has its own version of FMLA, "ORFLA". Personally, I love my boss. Fantastic guy, but I'm not comfortable yet discussing this with him & he didn't press at all. He just reminded me to contact HR for the paperwork. I'll more than likely tell him before I got out for surgery - just out of respect. But not until I am ready. Good luck!
  18. I'll be doing the RNY. My doc is very strict on his rule of it being the patients choice for which surgery. After all the workup, he said he would only do RNY for me. After a lot of research, I'm at ☮️ with the decision & I'm set for 7/10 surgery. Reasons? Biggest one was acid reflux My upper GI led to a referral to a gastro for an endoscopy. That showed something called Barrett's Esophagus due to severity of the acid reflux. Second - he was my surgeon in 2010 when I chose the lapband & he was there for me through the successful weight loss but eventual failure of my little band (which caused the severe acid reflux). After the endoscopy, the gastro doctor also advised she recommended against the sleeve. Sleeve is a great surgery. They both are! I have friends who've had success with both. A few friends who had acid reflux before the sleeve said they weren't real honest with themselves before hand and I it is more difficult to manage. They still love their sleeve. Have had the upper GI yet? Do you have frequent heartburn/acid reflux? If so, discuss with your surgeon for their recommendations. If not, keep doing your research until you feel the same peace. No matter what, you'll be nervous about the surgery, but when the excitement for your new healthy life outweighs the nerves? You'll be golden.
