1.5 years out - I get a cold/flu every month. Please help!
wiredlain777 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! So I am 1.5 years out from surgery, and have been getting sick with colds every 4-6 weeks. This started about 4 months after surgery, and when I get sick it clings on for about 1 week, or at times up to two weeks. It's the typical stuffy runny nose, cough and sore throat type cold you expect to get once or twice a year with a season change, but at least for the first few days of it I am prohibitively tired, as if I had mono. It is really causing problems - my job is getting tired of time off. I cannot stand to continue to be sick for 25% my life like this! I have spoken with my bariatric team about this, as well as the general doctors I see at the walk-in when it is occasionally bad enough to warrant going in. All I've gotten is - you've lost 200 lbs and that is a huge change and a shock to your system, your immune system may be off kilter, things will even out, etc. My vitamin levels are good, and I understand massive weightloss is a shock to the body...but isn't there anything I can do in the mean time? Anything to protect myself or boost my immune system to stop this? I am a single mom, and I cannot afford to lose my job. I am still so glad I had the surgery and changed my life, but I can't afford to continue to get sick like this. -
So I had gastric bypass on 5/17. My diet starts pretty much at a puree phase for a week, then moved to soft food. I have experienced no nausea at all, and no stomach issues whatsoever at any part of this - even spicy food, and one time early this week when I had a small piece of chocolate. Friday I a ground turkey for the first time with a little taco seasoning, and some fat free refried beans. I was fine that night, but was really gassy. Saturday morning I woke up with stomach pain and had to "go to the bathroom" several times I to the late afternoon. Yesterday evening my stomach pain got really bad. I took Imodium last night, have been taking both Imodium and gas x since (actually started the gas x on Friday). It was bad enough to keep me awake most of the night last night. It feels like a really bad menstrual cramp, except covering my entire abdomen. Ate a little food yesterday, but today I'm just sticking with water. So my question is this - I am guessing that I didn't tolerate the food I ate on Friday, so how long will this last? Is there anything I can do other than Imodium and gasx to help with my abdominal pain? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it! [emoji4]

Bad stomach cramping- please help!

Hey all, Thanks for all your advice on this! I started feeling better late Sunday and much much better yesterday. I first took it back to clear liquids for a day, and then shakes etc the following. Now I'm back to doing my puree diet for a bit and then I'll slowly reintroduce the soft food diet with thing I know set well (canned tuna, etc) and go from there. I have honestly never heard of a post op diet that moves so fast into soft foods and this program I'm on, and I think taking it slow is the best option for me. I also think it's going to be a good while before I try ground meats again! Thanks again everyone! -

My program starts on pureed, then moved to soft, which includes ground turkey and refried beans on their approved list on week 2. That's where I'm at now, so I am following my surgical guidelines Sent from my Moto G (4) using BariatricPal mobile app -

General post op questions / Can I sit up after surgery?
wiredlain777 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, so this is my 1st time posting to a WLS forum. I am currently working through the process for gastric bypass surgery, and have my 2nd meeting with my surgeon this Friday. I do not have a surgery date, but we should be setting it, or narrowing down the window when I see him. My best guess would be that I'm 30-45 out depending on how long my insurance takes for approval. I am currently trying to get everything ready for the post op weeks now so I'm ahead of the game. I've got some questions for those of you who have gone through it My plan was to recover sitting/laying on my couch since I figured my bed would be hard to get out of, but after talking with PCP about my WLS plan, I'm concerned that sitting for the 1st week or 2 might be too painful. Is it? How much time should I plan to take off from work? I was thinking 2 weeks.... Will I need others to help with anything? Like bathing, prepping food, etc. I tend to be pretty independent. Our household is myself, my teenage son, 3 cats and a dog. My son has school, work, driver's ed, etc and there is no way I am getting his help with showers, getting dressed or anything bathroom related. He can however help with the pets and I have a few animal loving coworkers that can stop by to scoop the litter box and take the dog for a walk. You think it would be okay to take a taxi home from the hospital? Lastly, what kind of clothing is good to wear for those 1st couple of weeks? I have some pull over your head night gowns, yoga pants and loose shirts. Thanks to everyone for your help on this!
