After surgery- what is it like?
GassyGurl replied to Lyds85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I woke up with no pain. I asked the nurse what kind of pain meds they had given me, and she said none. I was awake in recovery, helped get myself into my new bed in my room and walked over 5 miles in the hospital. I rated my pain at a 2, because I felt like I had to say something. I was awake and felt a little sluggish, but otherwise great. The only nap I took was the next morning after IV benadryl. They even let me walk myself out (with a babysitter nurse) upon discharge. My gas pain started about 24 hours out, and I'd rate it about an 8. But laying on my left side really helped the gas leave my body. It came in waves... Pain, relief, then repeat every few hours for a few days. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Self-Pay US Program Reccs?
GassyGurl replied to ElseeG's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Bariatrix Florida. I paid $8899, but I think it's about $10500 now. Also Dr shillingford in FL, Dr Borland in Louisiana, Dr Umbach in Las Vegas are all under $11k I think. I used insurance for preop, but everything else except post op bloodwork was covered. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Had anyone gotten sleeved with a 30-31 bmi
GassyGurl replied to Sampathak's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved with a 32.7 bmi. But I had years of history that had me yo-yo ing between 32 and 35. Plus, high BP, cholesterol and sugar. I did a consultnwith 4 Dr's, and no one had any issues. I just said my weight was 195 when I started the process. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Well, if you need a psych eval, they're going to probably ask the same question. I don't think there is a wrong answer, unless you're obese because someone forces it down your throat and you are afraid to leave them, or something bizarre like that. Just be honest, and it's OK if you're not totally sure, or if there are several reasons. And, it's a legit question, but the answer might not out unless you talk with someone about it. Do you stress eat? Celebrate with food? Have 5 glasses of wine per night? A good practice will help you understand why you failed before, so you don't do it again. Best of luck! How long before you were allowed...
GassyGurl replied to JealousMuch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We are allowed fruit after we hit goal. Protein first, then veggies if still hungry, then fruit. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I didn't mean to sound cavalier. The few times it happened to me, I tried to walk it off, and finally found a spot near a trash can or toilet. I think for me the whole episode lasted under an hour. The first was due to dry chicken, and then my first post op Thanksgiving meal (too much!) the next time. The pain started, like I had to burp, then the foamies, and finally hurling. But the 'good news' is I instantly felt better, like I only threw up the excess, like what was stuck in my esophagus. Much less traumatic than puking with the flu! But still not fun, nor something I want to do again. I hope you feel better soon! Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

It's happened to me 3 times, after over eating. Eventually I hurl and feel better. It stinks! Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

I may need to self-pay
GassyGurl replied to ElseeG's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was 35 bmi at my consult, and 32.7 the day of surgery. None of the 4 surgeons I had consults with had any issues with me not weighing enough. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I may need to self-pay
GassyGurl replied to ElseeG's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, it's worth it! But if insurance will not pay, shop around if you have to. My local surgeons charge $18500 for self pay. I went to Florida where I paid $8899. There are plenty of surgeons who cater to traveling patients and have great all inclusive self pay packages. Dr Borland in Louisiana, bariatrix Florida, Blossom bariatrics in Vegas, Dr pleatman in Michigan, and plenty to choose from in MX. My insurance has covered all my preop and post op testing, coordinated by my PCP. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
How to Get a Gastric Sleeve with Low BMI - Where to Go, How to Convince Doctors I Need It
GassyGurl replied to Salazar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here is my experience. I was borderline 35 bmi, for the past 5 years. Most Dr's required an online questionnaire about medical history, so I used my highest weight. No one requested medical records as proof. Once I started the process, I started doing shakes, and was 32.7 Bmi the day of surgery. I did need medical clearance from my PCP for surgery. I don't know if she would have supported me had I not been obese. Out of the 4 surgeons I had consults with, no one had any issues with my 32/33 Bmi. there are folks have struggled with bmi in the 32 to 35 range that have surgery and do very well. I think having the history of obesity is part of the key. If you search for lightweight you might find some more info. Or low bmi. I used Dr Taggar in Coral Springs, FL and was thrilled with the experience. If you can't get clearance from your PCP, I think Mexico is your best bet. What is a average price for the sleeve if you don't have insurance?
GassyGurl replied to Elizabeth 06388's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My two local surgeons quoted me cash prices of $18000 and $18500. I went to Bariatrix Florida and paid $8899. Insurance covered preop testing, and post op bloodwork. My PCP is on board with what the surgeon recommends and is thrilled with my success. I also considered Mexico, the costs were close, so I chose Florida over flying across the country. ISO Travel Companions/Buddy for Mexico
GassyGurl replied to AsherB's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Have you checked our Dr Wizman, Dr Taggar and Dr shillingford? They're close to ft Lauderdale. I was going to go to the OCC in Mexico, but between flights, hotels extra days, etc, it was just a little more to see Dr Taggar in FL. I paid 8899, but I think it's slightly more now. I used insurance for preop testing, traveled on a Thursday, surgery on friday, discharged on Saturday. Stayed in a local hotel, had a follow up Monday, then drove home. Self Pay, Hernia, and Complication Questions!
GassyGurl replied to AuDBall's topic in Insurance & Financing
I wonder if your insurance will pick up preop testing? Mine paid for all blood work, patch eval, ekg, etc and all I had to do was a copay. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was 35 bmi, with 2 comorbidities, but I ended up paying cash in FL. My insurance required a 2 year history of 35, and while I had 5 of the last 6 years , (2012,2013,2014,2015 and 2017), I wouldn't be covered because I was slightly below in 2016. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hernia repair with gastric sleeve
GassyGurl replied to Zombiefreakreyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a type 2 hiatial hernia. Stayed overnight. No extra pain, no problems, except my PCP can still hear it. She said they can't 100 % get rid of it, but I no longer have symptoms and have lost 36 pounds. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had a 11 hour car ride home 4 days after surgery. I was uncomfortable from gas pain, and we stopped often for breaks. I was peeing out a lot of IV fluid! We also had a delay for a broken AC, so I was miserably sitting on a curb in 100 degree Florida humidity. Other than that, the ride was fine. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am 6 months out, and have enjoyed wine and beer. I like dark beer, and I pour it into a glass and try to get some of the carbonation out. I can't drink a whole one, nor do I get buzzed from sipping slowly. I also enjoy a glass of wine every now and then with no issues. My biggest whine is not being able to enjoy it with dinner. I'd rather have a glass before we eat, while everyone else enjoys it with dinner. I usually have to wait an hour after eating, but by then everyone else is done and my wine is warm. By then, the desire is usually gone, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

Describe Your Post-Op Pain
GassyGurl replied to Bariatric Baddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I woke up in recovery, I wasn't on any pain meds yet. I actually asked, because I had no pain and thought I was on some new amazing drug. When I got to my room, they gave me a morphine pump and I rated my pain at a 2, because I felt like I had to say something higher than 1. I never really had any surgical pain. Gas pain kicked in after 24 hours and came in waves for the next 3 days. I'd rate those pains an 7 or 8. My only other issues was a blown iv that was very painful anytime they added anything, and my shoulder was sore for about 24 hours from some sort of injection they gave me. I used the morphine pump prior to them administering any iv meds, but it didn't seem to help much. That's the only part that had me tear up. Cholesterol changes after surgery
GassyGurl replied to Polly Pocket's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My 6 week blood work showed a drastic drop in total cholesterol. I have never ever in 26 years had an unmedicated normal cholesterol level. At 6 weeks It was 162, prior to surgery it was over 300 and on 20mg lipitor it was 199. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I have lost 36.9 since my surgery in August (51.9 total since May) I traveled for surgery, so my followup have been via Facebook live and my surgeon never asked about my weight loss. He told me I could expect to lose 60# in a year, so I seem to be on track. It took me years to put it on, and I'm OK with it coming off slow. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

For those who self-paid how much was your surgery?
GassyGurl replied to DRoseman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
