Longest Sleeve Patient?
temkins replied to CarpeDiem129's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seems like you have your surgery today - so a bit late to ask that type of questions, huh?! just kidding -
I would recommend 2 weeks if you can afford. All people recover differently. On my 2nd week I was still quite low on stamina and commuting could be an issue.

Hi there! Do you have a surgeon? If not, you should start looking for one, as he/she might help you to identify the best option for you. And after that you will know what to look for on this forum. This place is amazing and very helpful, extremely friendly and supportive - but it has tons of information and data and you might feel being overwhelmed

Still uncomfortable to eat
temkins replied to cindyRH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I've learned reading through this forum, this is a very common issue, which mostly gone after a year or even more. I think by that time people just got used to eat properly and accordingly to their new stomach - little bites, 2-3 minutes in between, small portions etc etc. 5-6 weeks post-op we are still using our original eating habits - too fast, too much and too careless. My comfortable lunch now takes about 1.5 hours - and that for a single cup of mushy foods. If I try eating it faster, it retaliates with pain. -
Soft solid introduction
temkins replied to Sherry Rice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sometimes a sleeved tummy may react differently on certain foods, especially early post surgery. I have similar issues with fish - no matter how smooth or pureed it is. Should go away eventually. If you have pains with one type of food, find a different one which is less stressing. Just run experiments and you'll learn what YOUR tummy can tolerate. -
I'm using straws to sip my water and protein shakes - can't be more comfortable. Got no issues with air intake - I guess this stupid straw ban is an urban legend )) And I never heard anything about not using straws neither from my dietician, nor from my surgeon. We need to take water and protein - and it's up to you how you are going to deliver that! )

Mariah Carey was reportedly sleeved
temkins replied to DaleCruse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good girl. What I don't like is that many of those superstars actually never tell the truth about the surgery and mainly insisting that they reshaped their bodies through gym and self-control. I really hope people would understand one day, that the surgery is not a "cheating" or the lack of willpower, but the most radical and ultimate measure. We actually gave up what others won't ever be able to - food! )) -
Supplements recommendations
temkins replied to zoxie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure there are many alternatives to chewables, as post-bariatric vitamins have a special formula and differs alot from other traditional vitamins and supplements. You may want actually try finding some with a flavor you like the most. -
Today it will be some seafood (as I love it) - likely 4 large shrimps would pack me full. Pure protein, low fat. Sometimes just a can of zero greek yogurt (around 120 calories with 19g of protein). And finally (I know this is not good anyway, but I can't stand it!) a bottle of organic Ginger Kombucha. It has some natural alcohol and minor natural carbonation, plus it has no protein and have some sugar (just around 5-6g probably), it is still low in calories and I don't think it would harm alot

It seems like you gulped it way too fast. A whole egg with a low-fat mayo would take me about 30 minutes, if not more. I just take 1/4 tsp a time and slowly eat it, then wait a few minutes until it settles down, and repeat. I had your experience with a very softly bakes fish - I swallowed a good bite with a minimum chewing and just in a couple of minutes was writhing in pain for about 20 minutes until managed to belch it all out.

3 weeks out and pain is starting again
temkins replied to kathys8055's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, definitely not a leak, do not worry about this one. One would feel it differently. I doubt it's possible to type with a leak, frankly speaking. I had something similar around my 3-4 weeks. In my case it was related mostly to BM piling up due to low hydration, and partially to inner incisions healing. Just imaging the thickness of your belly and how many inner stitches you might have (muscles+skin layers). My doc told me they inject some meds during stitching around incisions, which are slo-o-owly dissolving. That's why incisions pain is not a problem in many cases. But the medicine will dissolve eventually, and some inner stitches might hurts a little bit. -
I was sleeved 3 years ago today. Ask me anything.
temkins replied to DaleCruse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How possible is it to overeat with a sleeved stomach? Has it stretched out or you’re eating constantly? just reminds me an anecdote "I’m eating once a day - start early in the morning and till late night..." -
Don't worry, a few wings won't affect you at all, if your stomach accepted them well and this won't be your daily diet. Just keep in mind that this kind of nutrition doesn't move your closer to your goal
-
Get some Tylenol, avoid NSAIDS
-
keep going!
-
Yes, exactly! I still had that "head hunger" wanting to eat some tasty snacks, but can't say I had any real physical hunger - the body was probably busy enough to process 120g (30x4) of daily protein.
-
Oh yes - my stomach is very talky right now, and I think this is absolutely normal. I even love that - this just reminds me that I still have one (at least a tiny part of it!!!)
-
Sure! I took my pre-op diet as a very temporary task, so decided to keep it as simple, as possible. As a person who've tried dozens of various diets and nutrition plans, I figured out, that the most simple nutrition plan is the most efficient (for me personally!) That said, drinking one protein shake every 3 hours from 9 to 6 (had an alarm reminder on my phone) was much easier, without trying to fit some extra foods in between. Perhaps I'm just too lazy Besides, since you'll be on liquid diet for the next 2-3 weeks post-op, I personally decided to give it a try before being shredded!
-
Yep, sounds like a great plan. I just skipped veggies completely and sticked to 4 premier shakes/day + water. 10 days of pre-op has been very smooth
-
2 weeks after, but could probably do that sooner.

Post Op Day 6 Weight Gain
temkins replied to Killian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just pretend this is not your poo, but your "inner spirit"! -
That's because you are probably starving physically! This is not what you should do - try drinking more protein shakes, your goal is to get lots of protein (200-250% of your daily value), and less than 20% of daily fats and carbs. Try keeping within 700-800 calories/day. Plus drink plain water as much as possible - until you drink and pee simultaneously. That will make ensure your body is not starving (having lots of protein), but you'll be loosing weight 24/7. That was exactly my pre-op diet, btw!
-
if your insurance company is trying to screw you, do the same to their policies. Just put some weights in your pockets and eat/drink a lot before starting the program (your initial first scale check). That will boost your BMI! Ofc I'm just kidding

6 Month Diet Requirement
temkins replied to DRoseman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exactly my case With AETNA this is not a dieting per se, but a "supervised weight control program", which means you have to follow up on monthly basis either with a professional dietician during a 6 month period, or with a dietician AND a PCP during a 3 month period. During that time you should demonstrate some positive weight loss dynamic - if you lose at least 1-2 lb during that 3-6 months, you are fine and AETNA will clear you for the surgery. -
Working out pre-surgery
temkins replied to Krista27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
pre-op workout would help you to get off some extra weight, which might be very helpful during the surgery itself (less inner fat, easier laparoscopic access etc) - thus a better and a faster recovery! Just keep in mind that you won't be able to return to your gym soon after the surgery: - no heavy weights lifting for a few weeks - run out of stamina extremely fast - pains and weakness in general
