I remember pre-surgery wondering if I would be successful. And I was. To those struggling with the same concerns, know you will be successful. Though no one can predict possible side effects, my surgery was a major success and I’ve had virtually no issues or complications. since April 2017 I’ve gone from a woman’s size 22 to a size 14. Lost about 105 lbs. I don’t have the stellar full body before and after pics, but the picture below is the best before/after I can find Surgery was the best thing to have happened to me, good luck to all who are on the same weight loss journey

You will be fine. I had my RNY on Monday. I was in a lot of pain all day Monday after surgery but Tuesday was much better. It will be the best decision you have made. It won't be easy but it will be worth it to be healthy

Dr Swain was my surgeon, honor health in Scottsdale has been amazing. Highly recommend. Things went well...I was so out of it for the whole day after surgery but today has been a lot better -

I'm having surgery April 17. 32/f/Arizona. I'm 5'10 and started at 317 about 4 months ago and weighed in at 304 for my preop. So ready for this life changing surgery! Good luck on your may 1 surgery. If you still need a buddy, message me -
I don't think they did....in fact Cigna mailed me an approval letter before the surgeons office contacted me to set the date. If there was a questionnaire that my surgeons office had to do, they never told me. I feel for those who have Cigna and had a battle.....in my experience Cigna was a breeze. But I know that's not true for everyone unfortunately

My surgery is scheduled for April 17 and my only restriction is liquids the day before. But no one or two week preop diet...obviously sticking to high protein/low carb is a must but no liquid only restriction. Good luck. It sounds like a week of only liquids is rough. So worth it for your new life ahead though!

I don't know for sure but I'm pretty certain that dumping is a lifetime issue. However there are people on this forum who state that they don't seem to get dumping at all.. everyone is different. That said, a regular size bite of cake probably wouldn't cause dumping Once you start having pieces of cake, then it becomes an issue. Personally I'd rather have dumping to keep me honest and on track.

Help?!! Does insurance cover the vitamins and protein shakes???
cyninaz replied to Jmf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah I did get lucky with that. I know the vitamins and supplements will be a lifelong financial obligation..I'm glad you asked because there were some good suggestions here -
Help?!! Does insurance cover the vitamins and protein shakes???
cyninaz replied to Jmf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Cigna and they're covering my bariatric surgery 100% (total out of pocket $300 for 2 nights in hospital). I've been saving for this and will be using the money I did save for protein and vitamins. This surgery unfortunately requires a financial obligation as vitamins are a lifetime requirement (protein shakes may be, too) As someone else mentioned welfare or other public assistance may help but part of why insurance covers surgery is to prevent potential future health issues (which equals $$$)....therefore I'm surprised insurance would supplement vitamins and protein shakes for life. Best of luck to you, and hope you're able to find a solution to the supplements you will need -
The best one I've read so far is by Sarah Kent, Fresh Start Bariatric Cookbook: Healthy Recipes to Enjoy Favorite Foods After Weight-Loss Surgery It had recipes for all stages post surgery. Of course your doctor may have specific instructions of what you can or can't have and at what stages. But I found this to be extremely helpful--many good ideas. For instance if you like coffee there is a coffee (decaf of course) protein shake--decaf coffee, skim milk, cinnamon, protein powder and ice. I like the taste of coffee so this was great.

I was told it's best to have protein come from natural sources and that your body never learns to digest actual food if you only do liquid. (At some point, whether a year or more down the road, you'll want solid food....liquid only cannot sustain a person) Patients have to do liquid at first due to healing but a week or so after surgery, my nurses told me the body needs to learn to digest real food.

I have Cigna, and started fresh with nutritionist visits (a total of 4 visits), had a psych eval, PCP medical clearance and recommendation letter.....I was so worried I wouldn't be approved. However I was approved the first time around. Surgery scheduled for April 17! Some people had me worried with Cigna, but so far I haven't had any issues at all.

April 17. So ready for this! I was so worried Cigna wouldn't approve based on what people said, but I followed their requirements and was approved without issue.
