  1. I don’t dump after gastric bypass, which is more typical than those that experience dumping. But you shouldn’t expect or rely on dumping to help curb eating bad things. And if you’re eating too much you should weigh your food very closely and don’t chase trying to feel full. Food should be about nutrition and health, not entertainment or a hobby or replacement for your feelings. Are you working with a therapist to navigate changing patterns and behaviors to facilitate weight loss? Good luck!

    My story, WLS 2014

Why do you keep repeating this over and over? Are you looking for affirmation and sympathy from new people who haven’t heard your “story” ad nauseum?

    Vitamin B12 issues

Instead of taking B12 in pill or patch form try sublingual B12; better absorption post-WLS.

    Anyone else hate Gatorade?

My surgeon did not recommend G2 Gatorade after surgery; instead, he allowed regular Gatorade for hydration therapy. He said the artificially sweetened ones just don’t give you the optimum electrolyte replacement as you need salt & sugar for that benefit. I found drinking regular Gatorade to be very helpful when I was lightheaded post-op. It was hard to get all the required water in some days so the Gatorade helped when I was dehydrated. I wasn’t drinking very much so I wasn’t concerned that that smalll amount of sugar would derail my weight loss, which it didn’t. My favorite Gatorade flavor is Lime Cucumber (aka Limon Pepino)!

    Nausea after surgery?

I never get nauseous from general anesthesia and didn’t after gastric bypass either. Hope the same for you!

    Nausea after surgery?

jcb123: Have you ever had general anesthesia before? If so, were you nauseous post-surgery? If not, then you might not experience this issue post-WLS. Fingers crossed!

    Pouch Reset

What is your restriction like with dense protein? ‘“Pouch Reset” is a fad diet and won’t change the restriction of your pouch or sleeve. If you’re not feeling much restriction it may be what you’re eating (e.g. slider or non-dense food) or you’re still trying to chase that full feeling you had pre-WLS. Are you measuring your food? If not, I recommend it so you can get used to what the right portion sizes should feel like.

    Help Please!!

Pouch reset is a fad diet. I think the best approach would be to only eat dense protein and non-starchy vegetables; no cheating. And no sugar, artificial sweeteners, or processed food either.

    Surgery didn’t work?

Bariatric surgeon Duc Vuong, MD has a YouTube video titled, “Why You Should NOT Exercise After Weight Loss Surgery.” It is 27 mins long and very interesting. I also enjoy his other videos on YouTube.

9 Months out With Severe Constipation

For me, lots of water and walking help my constipation. On days where I don’t walk I have the worst issues. I also try to eat spinach everyday; cooked, or raw in smoothies and salads.

    My spouse is obese too

I had gastric bypass and it resolved my GERD. Has your husband considered getting a 2nd opinion with another bariatric surgeon?

    Relief for knee pain

I have Osteoarthritis in both knees and really struggled with pain & disability after sitting or standing too long, couldn’t straighten them out all the way (so lost an inch in height), and also had a lot of pain at night. However, since I’ve reached normal BMI I’m almost pain free. It feels like a miracle. I haven’t felt this good in a long long long time. Previously, I’ve had arthroscopic surgery on both knees twice (4 total) and have tried injections, physical therapy and different pain relievers, all to no avail. I’m sure I’ll require knee replacement surgeries at some point but now I’m optimistic it will be many years from now.

  14. I was in LA County prior to surgery in Tijuana so I took the Amtrak train to San Diego. The San Diego train station is only 2-3 miles from the San Diego airport so it was no big deal for my surgeon’s driver to pick me up there after he picked up a couple of other patients at the airport. The closest Amtrak station to LAX is Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. There is a special shuttle bus called the LAX Flyaway connecting Union Station and LAX, and it is pretty inexpensive. It also runs frequently except in the very early morning hours. Note that it’s about a 3 hour journey from Amtrak Union Station (LAX) to the San Diego Station.(SAN), and the train is sometimes late, so you would probably have to fly in from Mississippi pretty early as most Mexican bariatric centers want people to arrive in San Diego by noon.
  15. I don’t understand your statement that your family is insisting you go to your PCP. Are they paying for your surgery? If you’re not a minor then it’s your decision to inform your PCP or not, or see her/him for an appointment before surgery. Since you’ll be self-pay, it is the MX surgeon that will approve your surgery, not your UK doctor. I do recommend you be completely transparent with the bariatric surgeon on your full health history and then talk to them about any pre-op tests or other info they may require. And make sure you pick a surgeon based on competence instead of price. There are a lot of lightweights on this forum that have had very good results with bariatric surgery, myself included.

    Advice needed

Your hearsay info is totally incorrect. I was given a very detailed food plan and post-op diet requirements from my Mexican surgeon. I selected a very qualified surgeon that provided excellent info and support pre and post surgery, and I’ve had no complications. As well, my surgeon spoke great English.

    Vitamins making me nauseous

Post-op, chewable vitamins and ones you add to water made me vomit. The reason is because they contain sugar alcohols (e.g. xylitol, mannitol, sorbitol...), which I’m now sensitive to. This may be what’s happening to you; something to consider.

Gastric Sleeve - Dental Health Concerns

For many patients, Gastric Bypass resolves GERD/acid reflux, whereas VSG may make it worse or cause it to develop post-op. It would be interesting to find out which type of WLS results in the most dental issues. I get my teeth cleaned 3-4 times a year and I also floss 1-2 times a day. My dentist knows I had bariatric surgery so he’s keeping a close eye on any new areas of dental caries (aka cavities), and so far everything is fine. I had a prior history of GERD but it’s gone away since GB and I’m also off all acid-reducing meds. I’m hopeful this improvement will minimize my risks for dental issues going forward.

    Surgery in Mexico?

I’m so sorry you’re needing revision surgery. What kind of WLS surgery did you have initially? And did you start with a high BMI?

    Surgery in Mexico?

I have been VERY successful. The key for me has been following the food plan and not falling back into my old bad habits. The surgery is just a tool so I have to make good choices everyday, which so far I’m doing.

    Pouch reset

“Pouch Reset” is a fad diet that was created for marketing purposes to get people to buy a center’s bariatric products. You’re better off just focusing on dense protein first and non-starchy vegetables. Try doing just that, so no liquid calories, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol or processed food and see what kind of results you get. You may feel poorly for 1-3 days as you detox off of junk but then you should start to feel better.

    Steroids, obesity, and WLS

FluffChix - Have you had WLS? I'd be curious to hear about the impact of steroids post-surgery. Do you still have the wicked hunger or does that vary by procedure and patient?

    Surgery in Mexico?

My surgeon was Dr. Ramos Kelly in Tijuana, MX. I highly recommend him, had a great result and no complications.
  24. I was initially interested in the sleeve but due to my GERD and family history of esophageal cancer my surgeon strongly recommended gastric bypass. I had GB surgery in April, took omeprazole up until 4 months post-op, and am now off meds and feeling great. I am so happy that I've reduced my cancer risk and my (pre-op) esophagitis has resolved.
