100 miles in 100 days fitness challenge

Best wishes to you for a safe surgery and fast recovery.
  10. My biggest challenge was deciding what I wanted my diet to look like long term. This surgery gives us the metabolism reset that we need, but we have to find a healthy diet that we can live with for life. This isn't easy. Second was finding an exercise routine that I would look forward to doing 5-6 days a week. I found the solution to both so I feel like I am in a good place to be successful in maintaining my loss. Only time will tell though. My biggest success was getting off all of my medications for type 2 diabetes, and a close second was getting into the best shape I have ever been in by starting running.
  11. I have had a couple of people actually tell me this to my face, and yes they were overweight themselves. I just smile and say I am barely at a healthy BMI and let them know that I feel better then I have in years and change the subject.

What Post-Sleeve Rules Do You Break?

I see some people that responded saying they still eat the same foods they ate before, just less. I can't help wondering if that is a bad decision. Everything I have read and researched on successfully maintaining your weight loss says not to do this. I'm not talking about once in a while having a small treat, but really eating the same junk, fast food, processed sugar, ect.. ect.. I'm not sure why you would go through all of this and not take advantage of the opportunity to change your lifestyle and adopt healthier eating habits? Im just asking because I am really curious if many people 2-4 years out are still able to maintain a healthy weight eating junk?
  13. hello and welcome to the forum!! Are you getting the VSG surgery? The best advice I can give you is to stick to the plan your doctor gives you. Do whatever it takes to make that easier for you. Some people need to see a therapist to deal with food addiction issues some don't. It is a good idea to have a support group in place and that could be this forum if you don't have good support near you. Don't compare your rate of loss with everyone else because we are all individuals. Get used to weighing and logging your food. This is extremely helpful during the pre-op and post-op periods. Some can gradually give up the logging once they are further out and closer to goal, but many people continue for quite some time. Believe in yourself and keep your reasons for changing posted somewhere so you can refer back to them during rough moments. Make a list of things you will accomplish as you lose the weight, this is very motivating. Look at this as a complete life style change and embrace the healthy changes you need to make. I think the most successful people long term have made permanent changes in the way they eat and their relationship with food. They also establish daily exercise routines. The exercise is more about getting fit and keeping your body moving, then helping with weight loss. Your diet will mostly responsible for that. I hope this helps some. Search past threads on any subject you have questions about and just jump in and join the discussions.
  14. Thank you @FluffyChix. It feels good. I don't think I am done losing yet, but I am at a healthy BMI now so everything else is just icing on the cake. I am happy right where I am.
  15. That looks so yummy @Newme17. I love your binder for your recipes!!! I am copying that idea
  16. The two biggest changes I have made are to make sure 90-95% of what I eat is healthy and nutritious and I exercise (run) 6 days a week. In the first three months post-op that meant weighing and measuring everything. I needed to learn what a proper serving size was and it kept me from accidentally over eating. My sleeve is very restrictive and I have learned just how much I can eat. Meals are simple when they are all healthy I don't have feel guilty ever. I eat very little processed foods. I do allow for a little treat every once in a blue moon,( half a cookie or a bite of pie) I plan all of my meals and I take my lunch to work everyday. I still eat out a couple of times a month, but I can easily find healthy choices. I am eating a WFPB diet, but whatever diet you are eating just stick to the plan, exercise, and you will lose the weight. I am at goal, 5 months post-op
  17. I have no patience for waiting so I would schedule ASAP. Why wait? You will be more tempted to eat poorly next Holiday season because you will be completely healed.
  18. I am not...had my surgery May 15. Dr. Illan was my surgeon and I just wanted to say that you are in good hands and wish you many blessings for a safe surgery!!

What Post-Sleeve Rules Do You Break?

I sure hope the answer is NO! Just saying.
  20. Honestly Mexico sounds much more scary then it really is. Talk to Bariactric Pal. The whole process was so easy and they take great care of you from the minute you get to San Diego and the entire time you are under their care. The have a brand new hospital that they just built and I haven't heard of any complaints. You can Skype with Dr. Illan and they usually get back to you within 24 hrs when you fill out the online health form. I think this could work for you, but I don't have any back pain that was keeping me from flying. I hope you get this figured out and pray for a good solution for you.
  21. I was going to post this last night, but I fell asleep..lol... I hit my goal weight yesterday morning at 159.8 I am officially at a healthy BMI !!! I wanted to post it here on our thread. I am so thankful to all of you for your support through these last five months. It has been a wild ride for me with many changes. I started it out thinking I was going to stay on a low carb keto type diet because I believed that was what I needed to keep my type 2 diabetes in remission. I was afraid to try anything different, but when @Newme17 posted about the book she was reading, "Proteinaholic", I decided it was time to do research this further. Since reading that first book I have devoured several others on the subject of diet. "The Cheese Trap", "How Not to Die", The Starch Solution", The Omnivore's Dilemma", and "The China Study". What I have learned is that the closer we can get our diet to eating WFPB (whole foods plant based) the better off we will be. My diet is about 90% WFPB with the other 10% being diary and a little fish/eggs. I eat a ton of salads, beans, veggies of all types, whole grains, and a little fruit. I should eat more fruit, but I just don't seem to gravitate towards it..lol.. I still don't eat much bread at all. I just don't have room in my stomach for it or much pasta.I feel so good eating this way. I have lots of energy!! I have noticed a slight increase in my blood sugar the past 2 weeks, but it is still in the healthy range and no medications!! I want to point out that our bodies were designed to process carbohydrates for energy, that is why we have a pancreas and insulin. This is our bodies first choice for energy and as long as we are eating healthy complex whole grains we are giving it what it needs to thrive. The other big change has been running. I never thought this would be the case for me, but since I hate going to the gym I needed to find an exercise that I would love doing. I guess running was a good fit because I look forward to it everyday. I know I would not have been this successful without the awesome support of everyone on this forum. All of the veterans who still post here and others, @Berry78, walking this same journey. We are all different, but have the common goal of getting healthy and changing our lives for the better. Where are you @Sweet as peaches? I miss you and would love to hear how you are doing. Now onward to the next goal. I want to hit 155 and run a half marathon. The truth is I will be happy if I never lose another pound, but I want to keep getting better with my fitness. Happy Saturday everyone!!! Be Blessed!!!

    Obesity epidemic, society, dieting

Probably because people started to realize how bad smoking was for their health. There have been a lot of medical advances, but just because we live longer doesn't mean we are healthy and enjoying life. I want to be that 90 year old who is still driving herself to church.. or running around the block..lol

    Starving

You need to make sure that you are following your plan. It does get better once you are back on solid foods. I was never that hungry at first, but by about 4 weeks post-op my hunger returned. Just make sure you stay away from slider junk food. Those types of foods will not help you achieve your weight loss goals. If you must snack make sure it is healthy. A certain amount of will power is necessary to make the right choices. You can do this. It is all about staying motivated to change.

Read the revised addition of The China Study. There are a ton of good insights in that book.
