Well I am on chapter 15 this morning. I am amazed and feel disappointed in myself for not digging deeper into the literature for the facts 4 years ago when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I am thankful that I kept an open mind and I am still willing to learn when new and better information is brought to my attention.

"nutritional “experts” promote a fantasy they call “bio-individuality,” meaning that we’re all different and need to eat based on our body’s own inner wisdom. That’s fine in theory, but in practice it usually means choosing the foods we crave over the ones that can heal us. Imagine telling a cocaine addict to listen to his body. He’d be bent over a mirror with a glass straw up his nose as soon as his current high started to fade." I had to post this quote from the book. This is exactly why I felt the intuitive eating method wouldn't work for a majority of people. This book is really speaking to me.

I sure hope you are feeling better soon. Glad your stall broke!! Mine did too this morning.😊 -
I am going to purchase his book once I am finished with Proteinaholic. It got very good reviews on Amazon.

While I was away camping with my church's Pathfinder club I saw a lot of old friends. This camporee had hundreds of kids from clubs all over the area from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was great to catch up and talk with them. Many of them commented on my weight loss and a few of them talked with me about their recent decision to go vegan. These friends are Adventist as am I. Our church promotes a plant based diet and many of the members are vegetarian. I have resisted the plant based diet for one reason or another over the years, but I feel like I am being led to look into this more and I have started reading Proteinaholic, by Dr. Garth Davis. A big thank you to @Newme17 for introducing me to this book and pushing me to research this. I don't know yet where this will lead me, but I am keeping an open mind and will look at the information and will act on it if I feel it will benefit my health.
My stall has broken!!! The scale said 178.6 this morning. I haven't seen the 170's for at least 11 years. I am beyond amazed and very happy with my decision to have this surgery and reclaim my health. It feels like so many pieces of my life are falling into place this year. I feel better than I have in so many years and I have made so many great friends here along the way. I am feeling blessed today.

Awww, you are so welcome! Like you, I'm open, and I feel like there is way more to research and know about a healthier diet than what the western diet is typical of (animal proteins and dairy). I do like my cheese though, but I haven't had much of it in a while. I already know where my findings are leading me (and my husband) and we're doing much better because of it. There is a scripture that says, "everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial" This speaks loud and clear, that in our diets that we can choose to eat whatever, but it doesn't mean it's good for you.
Yay for the stall! I'm happy to hear it.

I agree with you. I don't usually speak much of religion on forums but because it was in context of the research he did on the Blue Zones I shared. I am up to the part about where he researches the history of increased protein in the diet. I am learning a lot and I have more research to do now. I know what I will be doing tonight....

I don't want to skip ahead to chapter 10...lol so it might be a little bit. 😊 The funny (or sad) thing is, I have been exposed to this type of information many many times over the years. I am even in the Adventist Health Study referenced in this book. I fill out this long questionnaire every year and send it in. I guess I am a "control" because I am an Adventist that still eats meat, but I don't eat pork or shellfish or fish without scales per the biblical dietary guidelines. I am enjoying the book thus far.

Yes I still test my BS, but not as frequently as I did pre-surgery. I tested this morning and my fasting was 75, which is excellent. I have been following a low-carb diet since December of last year. Before I had my surgery a low carb diet and 2 medications was the only way I could get my A1C down to acceptable levels. I have not tried a strictly plant based diet since having diabetes so I really don't know if it will work. I have just started reading the book, and so far it is very good. My apologies to @Newme17 for getting this thread off the topic of the book and on to diabetes.

This is what I am researching now. I know from my bs testing, grains, whole or otherwise raised my blood sugar quite a lot. It could be that my insulin secreation was also higher, but I can't test that at home. My diabetes is in remission since my surgery and I am off all medication except for my thyroid. I want to keep it that way so I am going to research this well before I dive in. I have the book on my kindle now.

An open mind is good to have. It allows for growth and humbleness. I have always been that way, I'm open for change and always open for correction. I want to walk upright in my life with truth. I just downloaded the Kindle version of the book. I will try hard to stay focused on work and start reading on my lunch break. -
5 months and struggling
Apple1 replied to alirocks713's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to reach out to you and give you encouragement. I am just about three months out and I can already tell that it will get harder with every passing month. What has worked for me is to keep remembering why I am doing this. You have lost 60 lbs. and that is something to be proud of!! My advice is for you to continue to search inward and realize your faults. We all have them. It seems like you have a pretty good idea of what you are doing wrong. You must find your motivation. This has to come from within. You have to follow an eating plan that is sustainable within the guidlines you were given from your doc/nut. Are you tracking your foods daily? This is important so you know exactly what you are consuming in a day. Your exercise does not have to be high impact if that makes you dizzy. Walking everyday works. Find an activity that you like so it will be easier to form a habit of doing it. Change your vitiams if you need to, but make sure you are taking them everyday, it is very important and it could be why you have low energy. Stay away from the slider foods. Ask yourself if what you are about to eat is worth it?? If you are battling an eating disorder reach out for help. Talk to your doctor about your struggles. You can get on track and start losing again. Change up your routine to try and break this stall. Have faith in yourself!!! Keep posting for support. I wish you the best. -

I agree. Every doctor has their own plan and everyone needs to follow the plan given to them. It is amazing to me how different they all are for the same surgery. -

I want to believe it, but if I am honest I have my fears and doubts based on the testing I did on myself. I am going to keep an open mind though and really research this. I know a plant based diet is very healthy and I know there are many within my faith that have joined the centurion club. Here is a short clip -

You were beautiful then and you are beautiful now Your smile really lights up your face. You have a wonderful family. I can see a big difference. -
I haven't read the book yet, but I am interested and wanted to ask some questions. I copied these statements from the article @Newme17 posted. Another problem is that the carbohydrate-insulin theory also presumes that carbohydrates have some unique relationship with insulin causing the latter to spike. However, when you examine the insulinogenic index (a measure of how much eating food increases insulin per unit calorie), you see that protein-rich foods like beef increase insulin secretion as much as carbohydrate-rich foods like pasta. I have had type 2 diabetes for almost 4 years and through my testing I can absolutely confirm that consuming whole grains does in fact raise my blood sugar a lot. In fact, it raises it much more than eating protein from meats as long as the serving sizes are equal. I could eat a 4 oz steak and not have a significant rise in my BS, but if I ate 4oz of whole wheat pasta it would spike more than 60 points. I haven't tested this since having surgery because I am afraid to awake the sleeping giant and have been staying away from grains. From my testing I can safely eat 15g of carb at a meal and have my BS only go up 20-25 points and it comes back down nicely within 2 hours. I ate a little more carbs then usual last week, and I did notice a slight increase in my fasting BS. It was up in the 90's instead of the usual 75-83 it has been. Most of my carbs last week were from fruit, apples, grapes, and watermelon. This was the first time I had eaten these types of fruits since my surgery. I was testing the waters a little and I think my body handled it well, but I didn't push it. I ate small amounts. My question is: Are there any type 2 diabetics that have switched to a plant based diet that includes whole grains and cured their diabetes? Did you get off your medications? If having WLS surgery cured your diabetes as I think mine has, have you started eating whole grains again and still have your diabetes in remission?

Loma Linda California is one. The medical school there is run by my church. I would say 75% of the members of my church are either vegetarian or vegan with about 25% eating clean meats. I have learned from many church sermons about the benefits of a plant based diet, but have not had the courage I guess or faith to do it. I am going to read the book. I actually had a conversation with some friends last week while camping and they were talking to me about going vegan and how it had really helped them health wise. I admit I am afraid of what will happen with my diabetes. I need to just research it for myself. Thank you for posting about the book. I'm gonna order it tonight. I think the Lord is leading through my friends and you.😊 -

Here I Go (My Journey Thus Far)
Apple1 replied to Litecaramel's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I think you need to take a breath and relax. Remember all of the reasons you decided to have WLS. Keep these things in mind when you get frustrated. The first month is the hardest, but you can do this. I think you need to turn your thoughts around to the positive. Our attitude can make a huge difference in our moods. Instead of focusing on what you are not eating focus on what you are accomplishing. You are changing the way you eat and you are becoming healthier because of it. I hope you feel better about your decision today. -

I stepped on the scale this morning and it was 181. So I am still bouncing between 180 and 181. That is ok by me. I felt so healthy and had more energy than i ever had on this trip with the kids. We were up at 6:30 and going all day long outside in the sun until 11:00-11:30 in the evening. I logged 103,000 steps for the six days. I stuck to my plan pretty well with only 3 days where my carbs were between 50-70 instead of my usual 30-35. So overall I think I did good.😊 -

CW 181 so it looks like my week long camping trip did not break my stall as of yet. That's ok though because I am still losing inches and I feel great. I had so much energy and was able to keep up with the kids!! -
How do you know when you're full?
Apple1 replied to ebroms17's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will burp and my chest feels tight. This doesn't usually happen to me now because I weigh my food out, I have learned how much is enough of the different proteins I eat. Chicken thigh 3oz, breast 2oz, steak 2 oz, turkey sausage 3 oz, ect,,, If you start by putting 4 oz on your plate and then weigh what you don't eat you will get a pretty accurate estimate of how much you should put on your plate. My goal is to eat just enough to be satisfied, but not get that tight over full feeling, This good advice came from blizair09. Our goal should not be to feel full just satisfied and then we never have to worry about overeating. Weighing your food also gives you accurate amounts of what you are eating for tracking. The only time I get an uncomfortable feeling now is when I eat too fast. This can happen at 8-10 weeks post-op when you start forgetting that you had surgery. Your stomach is pretty much healed, you are back on regular foods, and sometimes you forget and eat too fast, or don't chew your food as well as you should, and you will get a similar feeling as being full. -

Glad to be back home tonight in my own bed. I will weigh myself tomorrow morning and see how I did this past week away from home. I hope everyone had a good week. Back to work tomorrow even though I feel like I could use a day off after my trip. Our club won the 1rst place trophy for the best Pathfinder Club so all of our kids were happy!! I'll catch up on posts this week.
