Gym or no gym, that is the question
Apple1 replied to AZBlackhawk's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I feel the same way. I think you must be fit to truly be healthy. -
That is awesome!!! I lost 6.4 pounds this week, I almost didn't believe it. I was 180.4 on 8/7 and 174 this morning. I think my body is liking this plant based diet. I am still trying to track, but it is a little more complicated with all of the ingredients in some of the dishes I am making.

That is whole grain brown rice and quinoa, both are complex carbs and it was my first time eating them since surgery. I haven't had any problems eating anything really, my stomach is completely healed. I am still avoiding refined and processed carbs, but after reading the book Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis, I have decided to eat a whole foods plant based diet. -

I found this website with some good vegan recipes. http://www.thebuddhistchef.com/recipe/seitan/ I am going to try and make this. This looks like it would be good in a sandwich or a stir fry. My hubby is joining me on the whole foods plant based diet!! I got him to watch Forks over Knifes last night and he is on board. I weighed in at 174 this morning. I think my body likes this food! I have dropped 7 pounds this week -
Gym or no gym, that is the question
Apple1 replied to AZBlackhawk's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started walking 4 days after my surgery 2-3 miles a day. I was on my elliptical at 2 weeks post-op and started running 3 days a week at 5 weeks post-op. I will be 3 months post-op on Aug 15th and I am running 4-5 days a week 2-3 miles each time. I think stalls will happen either way so I decided it would be a good idea to develop good habits right away. I think exercise is good for our mental health as well as physical well being. Running has now become something I look forward to. I eat about 950-1000 calories a day now. -
Anyone else uncomfortable with weight comments?

The funny thing is the person who said this to me was obese! Some people just have no filter. I ignore these type of people now. Sorry you have to deal with this from a family member. -
Anyone else uncomfortable with weight comments?
Apple1 replied to bbrown527's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree it is rude when said in a unkind way. I think it is fine for someone to say you are looking great good for you, if it is genuinely said. I have had people comment on my weight loss, but all of the comments have been very positive and no one has asked my weight or even how much I have lost. I had always been slim until 2006 when I started gaining weight. I ran into someone in a store that I hadn't seen in a long time and had put on about 50 pounds. They actually said to me wow you have gained weight, what happened? I was speachless. I ended up saying something like yes a little and got away from them as fast as I could. It was so rude and hurtful and I couldn't believe they had said that to me. -

Ouch on the sunburn I know how that feels, my nose is still peeling from the camping trip and I have a zillion more freckles... My granddaughter weighs as much as your 4 year old..lol.. and she will be 1 on the 29th of this month. Your daughter sounds like my kind of kid. Adventurous and fearless! So glad you had such a wonderful family day and got such a great deal on the tickets. The Lord was blessing or sure. -

Congrats on the weight loss! You are getting closer to Ondetland😊 have fun today!! I went to church and then we came home and enjoyed a delicious lentil stew with quinoa and brown rice. Yes, I actually consumed 25g of carbs with my lunch, and nothing bad happened😄 Photos of the stew and whole grains. -

I have had an increased libido and my husband has also. I haven't noticed any issues with anything. You might want to try some lube products and see if that helps. The more weight I lose the easier it is to be active in all areas of life lol.. -
Low-carb did work for me, but I also had to take 2 different medications along with not eating more than 30g of carbs a day. I was filling up on protein and fat. Now that I think about it, I realize just how dumb that was. I wasn't really curing my diabetes and I was depriving my body of important nutrients. Not to mention possibly clogging my arteries or increasing risks for cancers.

There are many un-healthy obese vegetarians and vegans in my church for this very reason. They still eat a ton of high sugar foods!

I think this will depend on just how damaged my pancreas is. Diabetes is a progressive disease and most people with type 2 diabetes progress to the point where their pancreas does not produce enough insulin on its own no matter what their diet is. I don't know how long I had diabetes before I was diagnosed, so I had it for at least 4 years and possibly much longer. Everything I have read says that the sooner you have the WLS after being diagnosed the higher the probability that you will stay in remission. I am praying that my decision to go plant based will further help this by eliminating the fat store in my muscles and making them less resistant to insulin. The good news is that WLS has seemingly put it in remission. I haven't seen a bs number over 115 since two days after surgery. My last blood work was in April and my A1C was 6.8. A normal non-diabetic A1C would be 4.5-5.9. When I was eating a normal standard american diet my A1C was 11.2 !!!! My doctor threatened me with insulin shots and that is why I decided to try the low-carb diet back in December 2016. It did work to lower my numbers, but I was still on 2 different medications also. I am nervous about changing my diet because eating low carb has been the only way I have been able to control my bs. However, the research and data are showing me that if I continue to eat a high fat, high protein diet eventually my insulin will run out because that diet requires my pancreas to pump out more insulin. If I am understanding what I am reading correctly, by eating low carb I am kind of artificially lowering my bs, but I haven't cured the real problem which is fat blocking the receptors in my cells. This whole food plant based diet will clean the fat out of my cells and also lower the amount of insulin my pancreas has to produce. I will definitely report my findings. I am excited to try this out and experience all of the other health benefits this type of diet will bring. Sorry for the long post...lol

What to eat after your surgery because this diet is killing....
Apple1 replied to BiggSixxFizzle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't start puréed until week 3 and solids until4-5 weeks. Everyone has a different plan. I would stick to the plan your doc/nut gave you. Most of what you are feeling is called head hunger. A few ways to deal with it are to stay busy, walk, drink plenty of fluids, try different types of puréed foods. Cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, creamed soups ect -
When I first started looking into WLS I was at 35.2 BMI. On the day of surgery I was 31.6 and weighed 208. I went to Tijuana because even though I have type 2 diabetes my insurance would not cover the surgery unless my BMI was over 35. I wanted the metabolism reset and a good chance at putting my diabetes into remission. I also have hypothyroidism so losing weight is hard and slow for me. I am very happy I had the surgery. The risk was worth it to me. I am only about 23 pounds from my goal at almost 3 months post-op. I say as long as you are well informed of the risks and are aware of what it takes to be successful go for it. Good Luck.

I finished the book today. I spent some time today looking up some of the studies he referenced in the book and I am amazed that I did not find some of this back when I was researching the best diet for type 2 diabetes. I think I had tunnel vision and just assumed I need low carb so I didn't even seriously consider any other alternatives. I was focusing on my bs levels instead of the insulin response mainly because I can test bs but not insulin levels. I think I am ready to put this to the test. As I phase out meat and add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains I will break out my meter and test pre-meal, 1 hour, and 2 hours post-meal. I will report my finding back to this thread. I figure it will help any others who might be considering a Whole Foods plant based diet.

Last weigh in. 8/11/17- 176 I didn't meet my goal, but I am happy with this number. My 2.5 week stall had me thinking I wouldn't see the 170's so I am just thrilled to see the scale moving down again. This is the most I have lost in a week since the first month post-op. -

This is great to hear!!! I hope your appt. Goes well and your blood work comes back all good! I remember a time about 5 years ago I did a ten day green juice fast. I had watched the documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and I wanted to try this. I felt amazing. I don't know if it was from all of the nutrients or the lack of meat, but it was great. I now know that it would have been better to just blend the whole vegetable and keep the fiber. -
Me too. I am not sure which post private citizen was responding too. I believe reading this book and researching a whole foods plant based diet demonstrates having an open mind and a willingness to search out the latest scientific findings. I am not sure what was meant about Americans having the best longer term genetics. I agree that this country is largely overfed, but mostly with the wrong foods. Obesity and chronic disease is very high which leads me to seek out better nutrition for myself moving forward.

Based on my reading he said I believe 47g for women and 60 for men but I would have to look that up. He also provides a formula to use. He doesn't keep track of his protein and he is a marathon and triathlete runner. He just eats fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. He has tons of energy and is not losing any muscle mass.
