  1. Thank you! I think the extra shake will be the easiest thing to add in the extra calories. I am going to incorporate more nut butters also. My size 8s are getting loose all ready at 170 so I think you are right. My thigh and butt area are very baggy... ugh why do I have no butt lol.
  2. Wow. thank you so much @Berry78 for figuring all this out for me. You are the best!! I don't know if I can eat 6oz of food 5 times a day. I am currently eating 3 x a day 4oz with 2 snacks. My morning shake is 20g protein and 200 calories. I think I can gradually work up to that. Beans fill me up so fast as does whole grain pasta and brown rice. I can only eat 2-3oz of those tops. My carb levels have been right around 70-80g daily this past week. I think I am going to work on prepping my meals for the week using these figures and I will just increase my calories a little as I go along to slow down the weight loss. The problem is right now I am running 15 miles a week, but I am working towards 25 miles a week so I will need to keep increasing my calories if I don't want to lose too much weight.
  3. High fat consumption is the likely cause of type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar is just the symptom of the disease. The fat clogs up the insulin receptor cells in your muscles and therefore the insulin cannot get in and the blood sugar rises as a result. When I was eating low carb before my WLS surgery I was only controlling my bs because I was not giving my body any carbs to process. As soon as I ate anything that was even a little high in carbs my bs would rise higher than normal. This shows that I was not fixing the cause only treating the symptom. My surgery has cured my type 2 diabetes. I have not had a bs over 115 since my surgery. My fasting bs is between 70-85 every morning and I only see above 100 at one hour post meals. Amen!!! I am not sure yet where my fat levels are going to fall out. I am still transitioning and eliminating things from my diet. I have added more nuts and I do eat avocados. I will have to be more mindful as I go along to include more healthy fats and more legumes. Peanut butter and almond butter will work also. I love this way of eating, but I think I have found the one issue for me, and that is eating enough calories to support the level of exercise I enjoy. I will figure it out. Thank you for your advice.
  4. I am sure you will be fine. Good luck!
  5. I was nauseous the first day after surgery and I had one other time when I drank a protein shake too fast and felt the same. I have never actually vomited even once. I think everyone is different in how their bodies react to the surgery. I asked for and was given medication because I knew anesthesia usually makes me sick. It helps to weigh out your portions once you are on soft foods and solids so you don't over eat. If you eat too fast it can make it really hard to feel the signals from your stomach before it is too late. I think we all mess up a time or two while we are learning, but it really isn't that bad.
  6. It was about whether a person should eat eggs everyday. There were arguments made for not eating them and for eating them. You can read the information and decide for yourself what would be good for you.
  7. It was a good debate, no worries. I believe I may be one of the unlucky ones because I have had problems with my cholesterol for a few years now. A low carb diet did not help. I am hoping for much improved numbers when I get my next labs.

I have read that your lungs start repairing themselves as soon as you quit. I am sure a healthy diet can only help. I pray he doesn't get lung cancer or copd. I am glad I never picked up that habit.

All you can do is try, maybe he will listen or maybe not. My older brother is very stubborn. I have been trying to get him to quit smoking for years. I even bought him this ecig vape kit that many people use to kick the habit. He told me flat out that he doesn't want to quit and he knows it will probably kill him???

Amen!! But it is so hard to get people to understand this. For me a good point is that you have got nothing to lose, but everything to gain.

Thank you posting this @Newme17. I can attest to this. Before surgery when I was eating low carb my BS would be good, but as soon as I ate any type of carby food it would rise high right away. My diabetes was not cured at all, I was just controlling it. I love how well Dr. Davis explains this whole process and also posts his references. I hope those that are reading this thread, will benefit from this information.
  12. I had a very good experience with Dr. Illan. I like that they use a full service hospital and not a clinic. Everyone spoke English and the valets were awesome!! You can purchase a thumb drive and receivie a video of your surgery. I thought that was pretty cool. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Illan and BP.
  13. You may have acid in your stomach which can feel like hunger. Are you on an acid blocker? I don't think I felt true hunger until around 3 weeks post op.
  14. I always have a cup of coffee after dinner. It doesn't seem to keep me up. I won't drink it after 8:00pm now that I am in bed by 10.
  15. I'll list out what I ate all day yesterday @Newme17 6:00am - chike mocha coffee shake with almond milk 9:30-1oz of walnuts coffer with 2 splashes of half/half 11:30- mixed green salad with tomatoes, cabbage, orange sesame vinaigrette. 12:00-Diet green tea 16oz 3:00 - 10 raspberries with 4oz yogurt 6:30- whole grain pasta with veggies, ( zucchini, yellow squash, spinach, red bell pepper, onion, cherry tomatoes, can of crushed tomatoes flavored with garlic and basil. 7:00-coffee with half/half 9:00- cup of unsweetened chocolate almond milk
  16. I was for almost a year. I started low carbing in Sept. 2016 in an effort to control my diabetes and lose weight. I wish I would have done more research at that time. Healthy carbs are not my enemy nor are they the cause of my insulin resistance. I never thought I would say that. Anyway I understand that the topic of diet is a tough one to discuss. We will all defend our choices sometimes until death. I worked with the nicest man for years and his diet consisted of almost completely fast food. Everyday for lunch he would go to a different fast food joint to pick up lunch. He died of a massive coronary and no one was surprised. He wasn't over weight at all, just had a very poor diet. He was only 52. My high cholesterol numbers were from April, about a month before surgery. I had been losing weight, but not at a rate that I would think would have artificially raised them. I haven't had any blood work yet post-op.
  17. I never said eggs were poison. The op wanted to know if she should eat eggs daily and I said I wouldn't. This is my opinion and I posted some links with supporting evidence, not proof. I didn't expect to debate this topic, but it is all good information either way. I used to think eating low carb with plenty of animal protein was an improvement over the SAD, and actually it is. However, through my recent research I have come to believe I can do even better. Since having WLS I have been seeking more knowledge on nutrition and ways to improve my health and the health of my family. I wholeheartedly agree that everyone should eat in a way that they feel comfortable and matches their goals. I have always said this. It is very hard not to share exciting information that is making a difference in your life and not to warn others to be careful. We have the power to heal ourselves through our diet and exercise so I was just sharing. I'm not trying to demonize anyone's diet. Have a great day everyone 😄

The thing is anyone can google and find articles to support what they believe. So the take home message: Research, but in the end be comfortable with your lifestyle choices including diet. I am happy with mine and I feel great. Check out the book "How Not to Die" I am listening to it now. Great stuff!! I don't have time to keep debating this stuff, but really have a great day everyone
  19. I will be so happy when fall weather gets here. This humidity makes my morning runs harder. I am back up to running 3.0 miles and I ran a 5k yesterday 3.2 miles.

I feel lighter since giving up meat 2 weeks ago. It is like a heaviness has been lifted from my body. It is hard to describe and I am sure I didn't notice this when I was eating low carb. My energy levels are through the roof. I get up at 4:30 out the door by 5:20 run 2-3 miles and drink my shake before getting ready to leave for work at 7:20. I used to set my alarm and would hit snooze a couple times before getting up, but now it seems like my internal clock wakes me up exactly at 4:25 every morning. I honestly didn't think I could feel any better then I did a month ago, but I do. It is almost as if I can feel the wonderful nutrition from my food flowing through my veins. Corny, I know, but it is true!

I am down another pound this week and only 11 pounds till I reach my goal. All of the clothes in my closet that I saved over the years now fit me or are too large. This blows my mind. I have a closet full to choose from and a bunch that need to be bagged up and donated. I am glad I decided to save my clothes.

I can't even imagine running in 100 degree heat. I hate treadmills. but if I had to deal with that kind of heat I would be using one also. The humidity has been like 98% here the past couple of days and it is hard to breath. That is why I get up so early. It is the coolest time of day.

I got the book "How Not to Die" for my Audible app so I can listen during my one hour commute to and from work. I figure it is a good use of my time and it should compliment this book nicely. I will post any interesting or especially important information as it relates to the WFPB diet.

I agree. The problem is both sides of the research have flaws in their design and or the type of studies, but when you look at the totality of the weight of the evidence it is impossible to ignore.
  22. I have looked at a few recent publications attempting to show that saturated fat is not related to CHD or stroke. I don't have time to post a detailed review, but many of them suffer from issues also. Siri-Tarino, Sun, et al. 2010 received money from the National Diary Association, the National Beef Council, and Atkins Nutritionals. In this study they eliminated all subjects with high cholesterol, duh that really makes sense when saturated fat raises cholesterol. Chowdhury, Warnakula, et al. 2014 actually included people who were on lipid lowering medications. My point is that you can find issues with just about any study if you look hard enough. The only reason I posted to this thread was because I just can't see recommending high consumption of eggs. I should have just moved right along and ignored it. I raise my own chickens so my eggs are healthier in my opinion (I haven't done any studies) and I am still not going to continue eating them. There are plenty of doctors that have switched their diets to plant based, and all truly believe the evidence is clear even if it is not proven with double blind clinical studies. The reason I posted the link to the Campbell article is his statement that there is not 100% verifiable proof that a WFPB diet optimizes health for all people at all times, but he still feels comfortable that the closer we get to consuming WFPB diet the healthier we will be. The data support this, but do not prove it. This is good enough for me. I understand the political climate with which researchers must always deal with. If you have research that disagrees with the current political party you can be sure that if you are a government scientist, it won't be published. You must also always try to follow the money with any published research. I will see how well my blood work improves over time. My cholesterol and triglycerides have gotten worse eating a low carb diet with moderate to high protein and fats. I refused a statin drug preferring to to use diet and exercise, and of course the WLS, to hopefully lower my numbers. One diet is not right for all people, but I believe there is evidence and support for making this change for me. I hope this debate can encourage people to look at studies objectively and decide for themselves. Nutrition is not my specialty, but I do understand the big money, conflicts of interest, and bias involved in many of these studies.
  23. Yes there is bias everywhere. Nobody would refute that, but Newme17 was trying to offer a different perspective that does have science to back it up and it was dismissed. We don't all know what is in our genes but even without knowing we can say saturated fat is bad for a large majority of people. Even if you happen to be one of the lucky ones that can process fat and not get heart disease, you would not be harmed by eating a Whole Foods Plant based diet. There are a lot of reasons why research that would help show this doesn't get funded.
  24. But even genetics does not mean you will definitely have or develop a disease. Some of this research shows that genes for type 2 diabetes didn't cause disease until a more western diet was introduced. The same thing happened for heart disease. If I have genes that never cause me any issues because I am eating a mostly plant based Whole Foods diet, why should I care? Just more to think about.
  25. Yes to all of the bad components of the western diet that they started eating. This is why I said the weight of the evidence for eating a Whole Foods plant based diet is clear to me. They started eating processed junk food which also included animal protein. A WFPB diet does not include any of those types of foods, or as little as possible, because no one is perfect no matter how hard they might try.
