Apple1 replied to Newme17's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I will share on the other thread so I don't fill this one up, but you are right about the addictive nature of cheese. It has a hormone with properties similar to opiates. It comes from the milk used to make the cheese. I am trying very hard to make cheese a once in a big while treat..lol.. Your hubby's lunch looks very tasty. It is so cool that he cooks!! My dh does not at all..lol... -

I made this recipe tonight. It was soo goood!! I doubled it and I did add the rad pepper flakes and I also added the juice of two limes before serving. TORTILLA SOUP WITH CRISPY STRIPS Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Servings: 6-8 Crispy Strips 6-8 soft corn tortillas Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stack the tortillas and cut them into thin strips (about ¼ inch). Place on a baking sheet and bake until crispy, about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside. Soup 4 cups vegetable broth 1 medium onion, chopped ½ cup green bell pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 15-ounce can fire-roasted chopped tomatoes 1 15-ounce can fire-roasted crushed tomatoes 1 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed 1 7-ounce can chopped green chiles 2 teaspoons ground cumin ½ to ¾ cup chopped avocado Place ½ cup of the broth in a medium saucepan. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic. Cook for 5 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally. Add remaining broth and both kinds of canned tomatoes and bring to a boil. Add beans, corn, chiles, and cumin. Cook over medium-low heat for 15 minutes. Blend very briefly in the cooking pot with an immersion blender, or mass slightly with a bean masher. Add avocado and mix well. Cook an additional 2 minutes. Serve in a bowl with Crispy Strips over the top. HINT: To make this more spicy, add ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes along with the cumin. The Crispy Strips may be made ahead of time and placed in an airtight container until serving time. The strips may either be added to the bowl first, then the soup ladled over the strips, or add the strips to the top of the soup and stir in slightly. -
For the type 2 diabetics reading this thread. You should really read the book. Type 2 diabetes is caused by fat clogging up the cells in your muscles which leads to insulin resistance. Eating a low carb diet solves the symptom of high blood sugar because you are not giving your body any carbs to process. You can be cured of diabetes or at the very least reduce your medication by eliminating fats from your diet.

I was , still am, the biggest cheese addict ever. I love ricotta and cottage cheese..lol, I am doing very well at reducing the amount I eat. I haven't had any in about 2 weeks. My plan is to completely eliminate it over the next few weeks,to a once in a blue moon treat. There is so much fat in cheese.... I am listening to The Cheese Trap by Dr. Neal Barnard and what I am learning about cheese isn't good. both of your dishes look very delicious, and very tempting for me..lol.. -
He also said she may not have been eating enough of the right kinds of foods or that she may have had a digestive issue that caused her to not be able to absorb the protein she was eating. I agree if you have absorption issues you would have to eat more to compensate. However, how many of us are going to have those issues? Blood work would certainly pick up on any problems or deficiencies and I think we all do plan on having regular check ups. I agree that he didn't sight anything scientific and this was a study of N=1.

But the whole grains and starchy veggies like sweet potatoes and white potatoes are what gives us the feeling of fullness. They are nutritious in their own right and they add the calories we need. Combining ingredients with calorie dense grains and less dense veggies is just exactly what we should be doing. It is a win win combination. Another good combo is a few nuts on a salad or slices of avacado.

This is a quote by the same guy in the video I posted who is a RD working with Dr. McDougall. I like the way he explains things. Right now we are all bombarded with every kind of vegan or plant-based diet in the world. How would you capsulize Jeff Novick’s diet? I have really been thinking about that lately and how best to describe the principles of a healthy diet, and I think, plant-centered, minimally processed, calorie dilute, low SOS really sums it up. It’s not just vegan, vegetarian or plant-based because one could have a pretty bad vegan, vegetarian or plant-based diet. So I like to say “plant- centered” but I also add that it should be minimally processed. I don’t say “whole” or “unprocessed” as not all processing is bad. Processing per se isn’t what’s hurtful, it’s processing that either detracts from the value of the food (i.e., refining) or adds something that is potentially harmful, (i.e., salt, sugar, etc.). So plant-centered, minimally processed, and then calorie dilute, because so much food has become so calorie dense which is a major contributing factor for obesity and many other diseases. The fourth principle is a diet low in SOS, which is salt, oil/fat and sugar. Even if you have a plant-centered, minimally processed, calorie-dilute diet and you cover it with salt, sugar, and oil, it is not healthy. I’m not going to say none, but low, as it isn’t all or nothing.

Check out the protein requirements calculator by Dr. Davis http://proteinaholic.com/calculator/ it says I only need 38g daily. That explains why I am doing so well eating 40-50g.
-
Yes they are. I will keep drinking mine every morning nevertheless. I don't feel as if this hurts my over all health as my diet is so vastly improved over what it used to be. WFPB doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. Anything you can do to improve your diet and limit animal products and processed foods is a step in the right direction.

That video came from Dr. McDougall's website. I just finished listening to his book The Starch Solution. He was in the documentary Forks over Knives. Great book and I can recommend it to anyone wanting to take their WFPB diet to the next level and eliminate oils. I am working on getting there. I think focusing on being as healthy as I can through diet and exercise is a great way to ensure I never go back to old bad habits. Thank you @Newme17 for getting me interested in researching this topic with by creating thread and recommending Dr. Garth Davis's book.

Ok, I'm gonna share this link to a great video about carbs and why we should eat them. This was great!! Done preaching for tonight. https://jnovickrd.wistia.com/medias/6spnl236aq

Preach sister I am doing great eating 40-50g and I have even started logging only a couple days a week now just to spot check. Eating this way there is really no need to stress about calories or macros anymore.

They should know ASAP I would think. It usually only takes about 2 doses of the antibiotics to start clearing up the symptoms.Hope you feel better soon. -

Those are not fun at all. Your symptoms certainly sound like the beginning of an infection. Good idea to get antibiotics started before it gets worse. Whenever I have had one I got the burning feeling and also not being able to fully empty my bladder. Be sure and take some probiotics after the antibiotics or you could get a yeast infection. -

This is the quick meal I came up with. I had to use what I had available. I made some whole wheat pasta, and cooked up some onions, red bell pepper, yellow squash, and some Roma tomatoes. I put some alfredo sauace on it all and it was pretty good for a last minute thrown together dinner lol it wasn't vegan, but it was vegetarian. -

If we could somehow bottle their energy and use it when we want to workout ..lol.. we would be golden. -
How did you choose your goal weight?

You are one inch shorter then me so I think you should shoot for a normal BMI with a few pounds for bounce. You are doing so well I bet you could hit 160 fairly easily. -

@Newme17 all of your cooking from this weekend looks so delicious. I sure wish I had any one of them to eat right now. I am sitting here trying to figure out what I can throw together quick as I am too worn out from my trip to cook..lol... Thank God I am off tomorrow so I can regroup and hit the grocery store. I need to plan out some meals for next week. My dh told me he lost another 2 pounds this week, so 6 pounds total in the past 3 weeks. He is really sold on eating this way and he told me tonight to ignore him if he asks me to cook him anything with meat. He has his weak moments, when he is craving chicken, but he wants to stick with it. I am proud of him. -

I am still getting used to the taste of kale. I have a little in my salads that I eat almost everyday for lunch. It tastes a little bitter, but it is worth learning to like. It is such a powerhouse of nutrition! -

I just got home from camping and I am worn out. It never ceases to amaze me just how tiring it is to spend the weekend with a group of kids. They have so much energy and never seem to tire...LOL.. I am trying to catch up on the forums now..
