    Needing advice about eating

Definitely call the doc! But 28 days out is still fresh. Make sure you are drinking your shakes, that's where most of your nutrition is coming from now. But call the doc!! 😊

    Gastroenterologist does not recommend GB

I had gastric bypass, I am now 7 months post op. No complications. Its not true that GB patients lose all of the weight quicker than sleeve patients. I follow a lot of sleevers on instagram and they lose faster than me. It all depends on the person. Im a slow and steady loser. I have to meal prep, eat healthy and exercise multiple times a week to lose decently. They both have their ups and downs, but bypass is the "gold standard" and has a lot more research behind it. The sleeve is great too. I think the only person that can really recommend is your surgeon, they are the ones who studied the surgery. I think people hear gastric bypass and think of the old times, but its a very high tech and safe procedure now. I was up walking the same day, Ive had no problems. I eat healthy nutritious food. I dont even get dumping syndrome. I want to have kids. My surgeon told me that about 18 months post op it will be okay to try.

    Feel.horrible.

My dad got the nicotine gum and hes been smoke free for a few years now, still chews it too. My personal suggestion would be something to keep your mind busy. Im assuming smoking is similar to other addictions (like food for me). Keeping your hands busy by knitting, crossword puzzle books, playing games on your phone etc. Stuff that would make smoking difficult. I know that helps curb my snack cravings. At the end of the day just be strong! You can do this and it will be so worth it!

    So upset right now

I'm so upset right now. I just went for my 3 month appointment and surgeon said I was right on track so happy about that. I'm unhappy because he said most patients stop losing after a year to a year and a half. This confused me. So I called just now to speak to a nurse to clarify my confusion. She said that most people's bodies get comfortable with their weight at that point and plateau. If I'm still eating healthy and exercising how will I not lose weight? She also said most people don't ever make it to goal weight and average weight loss is 70-100 lbs, and that I will probably never see 150. My starting weight was 379 the day of surgery. That would only bring me to 279. This is killing me. How is this true? Any advice would be so much appreciated. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    So upset right now

Thanks James, at 7 months were you at or close to goal? My surgery weight was 379 so at 7 months out I will not be near goal. Im more concerned with them saying that gastric bypass patients stop losing after a year or a year and a half. Were you ever told that? My thought process would be that even at a year or year and a half if I am maintaining a healthy diet and exercising as I should then I should still lose until I get at or close to goal, but my doctors office is saying different.

May 26th. My journey so far...

Congrats and excited for your journey! I was also surprised with how fast I got through the process. My insurance did not have a 6 month requirement only the appointments (pulmonary, heart, nutritionist, psychologist etc). My consultation/first appt was 1/18/17 and my surgery was 3/23/17! They scheduled it at my 1 month appt in february I was so excited to not have to wait! Good luck on your journey!

    Feeling too well

OMG I seriously had to take a double look to see if this was something I wrote, you sound just like me when I was around 3 weeks out. I even called my nutritionist lol. So 3 weeks out Im assuming you are in the pureed phase? I am now 7 weeks out and I did not start really feeling the restriction until I started eating more solid food. Im still technically in the soft phase but I feel restriction. I serve myself 3 oz and rarely go over that. For some reason when I eat shrimp I need more...strange but oh well. What you are feeling is SOOOO normal. The pureed goes through you faster from what Ive heard, and what Ive experienced. You will feel restriction more when you advance. As for the dumping and no problems Im in the same boat! Ive had no issues. There was one or two times when I accidentally took too big of a drink/bite and I felt an uncomfortable feeling but it passed within a minute or two. I have not dumped, but that is a good thing. Im following my doctors and nutritionists orders to a 'T' so there is no reason for it. Some people have the issue where certain foods dont agree with them, like chicken for example but not everyone has that. I lost quickly-ish in the beginning. It slowed down but my doctor says Im right on track. They told me that I lost a lot preop during the liquid diet so that was my 'big drop' now Im just losing steadily, some weeks more than others. I see a lot of people lose faster than me but Im exercising and eating right so oh well. You are fine! Dont worry

    Why am I not losing?

I'm so bummed. Surgery was 3/23. HW was 405 on 1/18/17. Day of surgery was 379. Today I am 6.5 weeks out and I'm at 352.8. 26.2lbs lost since surgery. The majority of that was in the first couple weeks after surgery since then it's been 1 to 2 lbs a week. I accepted that as I had not started my exercise routine until I was cleared to do so last week at my 6 week follow up appointment. I immediately started exercising. My surgeon told me to incorporate resistance training, which I did. I'm sore but I loved it. And this week I only lost 0.2lbs. I don't understand. Is this a stall? And why am I losing slow? I have a hard time believing that my muscles retain water from soreness. I'm right at where they want me to be nutrition wise too. To add I eat around 800 calories a day, usually around 30g carbs a day, 30-40g fat per day, 90-100g of protein a day. 64-70oz fluid per day. This is where they want me. I have so much weight to lose so it doesn't seem right. I'm so discouraged. I thought the weight came off fast in the first 6 months and then slowed down. Do your bodies really need to get "used" to things? Most things I read say people stall at the 3 or 4 week mark but I'm at the 6 week mark. Any advice, or experience would be very much appreciated! -discouraged Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Anyone become invisible after surgery?

A lot of us used food as a coping mechanism previously, now you cant. Food cant be the center of your outings, attention etc. Find new hobbies, things you enjoy that do not involve food. Find new things to do with your friends. If your friends are annoyed with you because of your food choices or because they think you 'cheated' then maybe its time for new friends, real friends would not do that. Are your friends overweight? A lot of times when one friend loses weight and the others are still overweight they unintentionally push the new healthy friend away. YOu have to worry about you and your happiness and screw anyone else that does not want to hop on the happy train with you. It is amazing that you have lost that much weight, and you should be insanely proud of yourself. You have extended your life, you can do SOOO much more. Your options are limitless. Enjoy your life. IF there are poison people in it then 'F' them.

    Why am I not losing?

Hi, thank you for your comment. Are you saying I should be eating more than 800 calories? Im kind of maxed out with my food options (im still on the soft food phase per my nutritionist instruction). I drink about 1-2 protein shakes a day to meet my goal of 100g. How much protein were you on at my stage (6.5 weeks currently is where im at). For the strength training part it was per my surgeons direction. He advised me to do resistance/strength training 3-4 days a week and 2 days a week of high intensity cardio (like 30 seconds fast, 30 seconds normal pace). He told me to not focuse on the treadmill or eliptical because it would be hard on my joints at this point, Im guessing due to my higher starting weight. I thought it was strange that he told me to focus on building muscles but the way he explained it to me is that as you build muscle your body burns more calories. So at rest Ill be burning more calories as i build more muscle. Still seems strange to me because I feel like I should be focused on burning fat. I know strength training is part of the process but I dont know. I feel slightly lost.

    Why am I not losing?

Yes it is hard! And discouraging when you see others. I think I just need to stop comparing myself to others and focus on what my doctors and nutritionist have set up for me.

    Why am I not losing?

Congrats on your loss, that is amazing success! Im glad to hear this is normal. I see these people that lose a bunch on instagram. I follow a lot of WLS profiles, just seems like they are losing faster than me and some of them arent even exercising, and I see them post food I couldnt even imagine touching at this phase! Sounds like I am more normal than I thought. No wonder they were not concerned at my appointment last week.

    Why am I not losing?

its crazy how the human body works! So frustrating, but glad to hear that this is common with others. Thank you for your message.

    Am I broken?

I feel like I'm broken, or my pouch is lol. I've been doing great since surgery and advanced to pureed foods a couple days ago. My directions are 1.5-3oz per meal. I started off slow of course with like 1.5 oz and was fine. I plate 3 oz of pureed and I am able to finish it with no issues. I eat slowly and chew the tiny little pureed bites very well. I stop eating after 20 minutes or so per my nutritionists instructions to avoid grazing. Anyways I feel broken because I see so many people say they can barely eat an ounce without feeling full. I'm definitely satisfied at my 3 oz but feel like I should be more restricted like other people??

    Dumping syndrome

Yikes! I haven't had it yet, hoping to avoid it at all costs!
  18. This is majorly TMI so back arrow if you need to. Posting this who may need the reassurance and help like I did. I of course am not a doctor but here's my situation. I had surgery on 3/23/17, so I'm only a week out. I've been on the liquid diet and my pain meds this whole time. Until yesterday I was not able to fully meet the 64oz requirement. My surgeon told me to build up to it and I did. I've been sleepy alot from the pain meds making me drowsy and from recovering overall. My walking consisted of walking around the house and outside some to keep things moving. Until yesterday. I felt up for going shopping, no bending but i drove the cart while the fiance grabbed the groceries. Walked around for quite a bit. This helped work out gas....and constipation. Holy moly. I don't even remember not going, I was going some everyday so I thought things were fine...at least I think I was. With this working out and the pain meds, the iron supplement, the more sitting than standing, and the not meeting my water goals i had severely hard and dry stool. One of the worst pains I've experienced. I couldn't get the last but out, I was agonizing in pain. I checked my "okay" meds for after surgery and milk of magnesia was suggested. I took 30ml, which is the smaller dose. It did nothing. I was so scared (This was a longer ordeal but sparing you the details) I almost went to the ER. I really didn't want to do that so I called my surgeons office (mind you it's midnight by this time) to see if there was an after hours emergency number but the call went right to this after hours number who sent me to the on call doctor who told me that I didn't take enough. Told me to take the full dose and give it the 6 hours. So I did. I made myself chill out and fall asleep. Woke up 4 hours later and it worked. It was still painful as all to pass that but it worked. I've had this full ache on my right side that I thought was gas and maybe it was but ever since all of this passed it is gone!! Sharing this as I've heard this is common, not sure if it was as painful and severe as mine but in case....i highly advise you drink all of your water asap! And walk, even just a 10 minute walk around your neighborhood. I thought getting up and around my house was enough but it was not. I'm so glad I'm not going to the ER, that would have been humiliating. Sorry for TMI, but felt it was important to share.

    2 weeks out & dumping?

Omg i.just went through terrible pain. I called the after hours and on my checkout paperwork it says milk of magnesia. Take the full dose, give it a few hours and it works. You can also try mirilax or smooth move tea. I can only speak from experience and suggest milk of magnesia.

    Feeling sorry for myself

Soon you will look at this as a small "bleep" of your journey. You have SO much to look forward to!
  21. So my surgery is in 5 days....I'm having gastric bypass and out of nowhere I'm having second thoughts. I've looked up every horror story possible so I'm freaking out because of that. I keep looking up malnutrition and wondering if I should've chose the sleeve to prevent dying from that. Not sure if I should go through the with this. I'm 380lbs as of today, started at 405 a couple months ago (my process was fast as my insurance had no 3 or 6 month requirements) I have pcos and I'm 30. Nothing else wrong but I know I'm headed there. Not sure what to do....any happy thoughts to share?

Getting cold feet all of a sudden

Thanks so much everyone!! I calmed down, I was having a freak out moment. Im calm now lol. Im still having the gastric bypass on Thursday, 3 more days. Im nervous but I know the complications that can come with staying at the weight I am now are far worse to live with, I feel like Im lucky to not have as many issues at my weight that others have. Im having it done at the most prominent hospital in my state, which is also certified by that one surgeon board ( I forget the name) so I know I am in good hands. Thank you for all your kind words!!

Start my 14 day diet today

It gets easier. After day 2 I was fine. I'm on day 8 today! My favorite is premier chocolate with pb2 with a couple cubes of ice blended. I also do decaf coffee with a protein powder. Sugar free coffee syrups like caramel added in are good or extracts. I made a vanilla shake with maple extract the other day that was good. My go to has been broth, sf jello and occasionally a sf popsicle but try to limit those because it's 4g carbs per popsicle!
  25. I'm on day 4 of my two week preoperative diet. Surgeon has me on protein shakes and bariatric clear liquids. Twice a week I can have a healthy meal consisting of lean protein and non starchy veggies. I'm doing fine, have some struggling moments but overall it's not that bad. I guess knowing that I have to do this to hit my goal is what keeps me in check! My question is if I can have two meals per week why can't I just eat high protein low carb instead of shakes? I know liver shrinking is low carb but does anyone know why it has to be liquids? Just curious!
