  1. Avocado, cream sauce on meat, maybe full fat cheese on a burger, a few nuts and the nuts will keep constipation at bay.

Sad news if you like to drink

I did know a RNY person that turned to alcohol instead of food and it ruined his life - he lost his job, ability to drive and other things. I still think many bariatric programs need to mandate therapy for 6 months prior ad 1 year after because so many people fail to find a coping mechanism to replace food and have a multitude of reasons behind the symptom of using food. There is of course a wide spectrum to disordered eating and many are unwilling to admit or tackle that - oh I just eat too much, etc.

    REGRET

@BlueAngelEyes you need to switch therapists, one that understands and isn't biased against wls patients - ask your bariatric team for a recommendation. Hormones play a big part of your mental states right now, and this will jack with your perceptions and they will continue to bounce around during this process. Soon adding more exercise and getting better sleep will level these out. All of you are thinking you are deprived because you have made food events a large part of your lives and now it has to change. It just has to or you will not succeed. I am not trying to be negative here, but these changes need to be permanent or you will gain weight back. Early in this journey you will naturally lose because of the severe restriction and the honeymoon period, even if you eat non-nutritious food. You will think -' hey I ate my protein and I had some pizza and lost 8 pounds this week, this works'. Yes it does because of the honeymoon period. Don't let that be a slippery slope to indulge whenever you 'feel' like it - it's my brother's wedding, it's my friend's baby shower - I must celebrate. NO, not with the food - enjoy the gifts, the decorations, the party part - food is secondary. Everyone that has been obese is insulin resistent, and your body has spent years getting there. Some of you say you were healthy at 41BMI and I call BS. You were headed for diabetes and high blood pressure and sleep apnea, and compromising all your organs. The longer you keep grain carbs with no nutritional value and sugar out of your system the less you will crave them, and you will be free from this demon of ill health. I am not saying never, but build this early resolve to fix your health. You will be amazed, active, more energetic and happier. And wanting to look healthy and cute is not vain. Don't beat yourself up over wanting to look good - you will feel even better. Hang in there.

    After effects

@ccs124 use a heating pad on your abdomen.
  5. Prilosec works better than Zantac. Prilosec is a PPI - most docs prescribe a PPI - you can get a 24 hour time release version. Crystal light and other drinks with citric acid gave me terrible reflux, I had to watch for those additives in the ingredients list - as soon as I stopped them it went away. Also apple cider vinegar diluted in water everyday helped. But first get it under control before doing the apple cider vinegar and get unfiltered organic. Also do not eat within 3 hours of going to bed and do not take that last bite - overfull.

    First Week Tips

For pain while trying to sleep, I found a heating pad worked wonders. Room temp liquids or warm decaf teas before cold drinks helped. It will still be small sips until inflammation goes down. Honestly, time and healing are going to fix all these issues and it seems to take longer than it does. If you need better pain meds to sleep ask for them because lack of sleep will magnify everything. Take naps, I HAD to take naps in the early weeks - it is major surgery you are recovering from be patient and kind to yourself. But you must work at getting fluids in.

    After effects

Use the spirometer from the hospital for getting anesthetic out of your lungs, walking, hot showers. Gas X doesn't work on the air in your abdominal cacity if that is the pain. Your gut is waking up and will make loud noises and not be regular for awhile, don't be surprised if now you get constipation, sometimes diarrhea precedes constipation.
  8. Sosewsue61

    Protein during clear liquids

Room temp is less painful, or warm decaf tea, alternate with sf popsicles or freeze diluted clear protein drinks - Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or Syntax nectar.

    Struggling with Pre-op diet

Pre-OP suck$ hang in there. The not chewing really gets to all of us. Take a walk, take a nap, take another shower! I did cheat with tuna twice, lol. The purpose is to de-carb your system, remove glycogen stores from the liver so it is easier to lift out of the way for surgery, and get you ready to burn fat. I lost about 10 pounds, you will make it. Be strong.
  10. Sosewsue61

    I think I'm dehydrated

Sf popsicles, room temp water with mio drops, warm decaf tea, bone broth... and ingest some sea salt.

@GreenTealael where do you buy that jerky? About the only convenience food I use is P3. I think the protein bars and chips taste and smell like old men's socks.
  12. You are right, no one needs a food cop (especially if they have no education or experience to bring). WLS patients need to be accountable to themselves because that is where it matters, no one else can do it for you. You have to trust yourself. Do you need someone to tell you to brush your teeth or take a shower? Are you 10 years old? Everyone knows what to eat, and everyone must learn to navigate the journey.

    Hobbies

You can bake, just not right away, you can adapt recipes - find new ones with less sugar. But later, much later. For now - Analyze what pleasure it is baking gives you - the smell, the feel of the dough, the texture, the pride in creating? Translate this 'feeling' in something else - making jewelry would give you texture and color and gifts to give away. Take a class, or look at youtube. Quilting/sewing might provide the same thing - but requires more time and skills. Candle or soap making would give you fragrance, as would floral decorating. Heck experiment with some, take classes. Or an entirely new sport - the gym, a bicycle, kayak, swimming, horses, archery, golf, dancing. I quilt, bead, sew, dance - I did all these before surgery. I bake, but save it for only the best celebrations. I eat high quality food 90% of the time, I am worth it. I am worth scallops, lobster, asparagus, fresh green beans, the best salad ingredients, a few fresh blackberries, coqau vin, pricey cheese.... no cardboard food

    Day 13

Yeah - after surgery the thick shakes were too sweet and just gross, Isopure also try Syntax nectar. I sautéed vegetables in my bone broth for flavor - carrots, celery, white beans. I strained them out, or ran through the Ninja and strained. At about your stage I could not get a whole scrambled egg in - 4 bites, done. You still have inflammation, it will progress nicely from here. Go slowly, wait 10 minutes after bite 3... that fullness is sneaky. Also some of us have a 'tell' - our noses run, sneeze or we hiccup. I still hiccup.
  15. For those struggling with regret, please get some therapy because you will need to learn the root cause of this and learn to soothe yourself with something other than food. You could have low level depression, left untreated you will blame the surgery. No one solves head issues by losing weight, it goes way deeper than food - food is a symptom. I wish you much success in this journey.

    Social Anxiety

Thoughts aren't necessarily true. Fear can keep you stuck, I know this from my own anxiety. People are mostly thinking about themselves and not you so much. Sure there are exceptions. You might be surprised at your personality changes after surgery, you might find your voice and finally tell a few people to shut their pie holes - there are some that need it. And you will find you need outside approval less and less. Because you are worth it. You have settled for less because you tied your worth to your weight. Please journal about your journey - start now it really helps. Thank your body for getting you this far in life, make some plans to be kinder to it from now on. Good luck.
  17. Could be reflux, it sometimes mimics hunger.

    Who Do You Believe?

Try measuring your improvements, like lifting more, increasing incline, etc rather than recording from an app.
  19. You will be fine. I went on a cruise at 7 months, and ate my 6 bites and only had one glass of wine - be careful you are now a 'cheap date' and 'easy drunk' LOL Just don't push your sleeve or you will barf it back up. Do activities, snorkel, swim, take guided walking tours - use that energy up!!
  20. Sosewsue61

How long between bites of food?

Microwave... you can only eat 1-2 oz of anything right now. You should still be on protein shakes right now, not food. You are still inflamed and nothing is healed at this point. Exactly WHAT are you eating? Even cream soups are after two weeks, be careful, your gut is not fully functioning.
  21. Keep sipping liquids, sugar fee popsicles, hydration is the total goal right now. Walk and walk some more it will help with getting the air out of the stomach cavity and relieve some pain. When laying down put a heating pad on your incisions it will feel good. Swallowing - warm decaf tea, or broth soothes the esophagus and relaxes the muscles in the stomach area. Yes - sleeping was difficult for a couple weeks. Rest as much as you can, move slowly when sitting up, then stand for 30 seconds before walking - blood pressure can drop after this surgery. Hold hand rail on steps, not kidding I nearly passed out - this can also be a sign of dehydration - it is next to impossible to catch up once you are in it. Pinch your wrist skin and make sure it contracts back nicely, if not push that liquid. Try to get protein drinks in, if shakes are gagging get some Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or punch. Or Syntax nectar. Some smells may make you nauseous and food may taste weird. I could not tolerate chocolate, got sick on sf pudding and even now it doesn't do much for me. This time seems to drag forever, but it gets better once you get to mushy stage. Welcome to the 'other side'!

    Afraid I'm Making a mistake

No regrets, wish I had done it sooner. Another way to look at it is this - if you don't have the surgery you could go back to a diet like Weight Watchers and lose 30-40-50 lbs, struggle with the same issues of learning to eat highly nutritious food, the weight will come off slowly, you will get disgusted and eat off plan, then beat yourself up over it. And start over. How many times do you want to start over? I know I did it for decades. Yes, some foods might be off the list but they become less important to you. Food is not an enemy, nor is it a friend - only you can give it that power. I could eat some bread, pasta, rice but it really isn't a big deal to not eat it. I take a bite once in awhile of toasted bread and move on. I am not physically craving anything unless I super indulge on sugar carbs for a couple days - but as soon as two days without it pass I get over it. Have I had wine - yes a glass, cake - 4 bites of cheesecake at a bridal shower - it wasn't as good as my homemade cheesecake LOL The weight will stay off easier, maintaining will be easier.

    REGRET

You are in a deprived nutritional state, and recovering from major surgery, so be kind to yourself. Forgive your altered state. What would you tell your best friend? You would say, it's done - how can I help? Your thoughts can out and out lie to you. Would you shame someone that needed knee replacement - by saying 'well if you hadn't gotten so fat you ruined your joints, you wouldn't need an 'artificial knee' ? Woukd you shame someone for needing a c-section instead of 'natural' childbirth? NO. You would say - this is an opportunity for you to be mobile again and enjoy your life, live fully. And your body wasn't going to cooperate with childbirth, you have a healthy baby to love. This surgery is a tool for you to improve your life. Your original reasons for wanting it are buried behind some undeserved guilt and fear. Stay strong, it will improve.
