    Hypertension

I have borderline hbp and was taking 7.5 of lisinopril prior to wls. My surgeon took me off the lisinopril. And here is the weird thing - the three times I have had a follow-up appointments with the PA at the surgeon's office my bp has been on the higher side 140-150/85-90 and I said - that's too high - you took me off the meds - so? The PA said - well you need to see your primary doctor. But YOU guys are the ones that took me off the meds! So I put myself back on my normal dose this week and have a call in to my primary. I have my surgeon share all results w my primary, whether or not they read them is anyone's guess.

    Why no meat????

@jenn1 yes physicians orders should be followed in most cases - but not always - they are educated, but far from perfect and subject to biases just like any other human. There are many many that I trust, but there is no blind trust. If I had taken the proscribed advice of an orthopedic surgeon (Dr.D. McCarty) he would have yanked out my artificial knee because he said it was loose and that is why it was inflammed and bothering me. Instead I paid $500 out of pocket to go see my original surgeon after the other one's exam (he wasn't in my *** that year), and he said it's not loose, I'd like to see him knock it loose with a hammer. He just wants to put in the knee he has a patent on, he is my brother-in-law btw too. You have a little scar tissue rubbing and we can do a shot, some massage, and if it doesn't improve, I can go in and clear some of it out, but I doubt if I have to do that. Then there is the resident that brought my 21yr old son's blood sugar down too fast and caused brain swelling and a near coma, until I pitched a fit and made her call an endocrinologist to confirm what I just told her she needed to do. Then there was the b!otch physician's assistant that told me I had 3rd stage kidney failure, that I had had a heart attack, and not to go to the gym to workout because from just listening to my heart she said she could hear a valve problem and I could jump down off the exam table and have a pulmonary embolism. I had went to her to get a referral to that idiot ortho and she ordered ALL these tests I obviously didn't need!!! She did this sort of thing to two other people at my work too. I reported her and had one helluva time getting all that chit out of my medical record. She was a nice money maker for that clinic.... Talk about stress...so no, I will follow medical advice almost all of the time, but will make informed decisions and ask questions until I am satisfied. I am not trying to disrespect anyone's opinion or choices. Also I am fat but not a food addict. I overeat and liked food. I have used food for emotional reasons at times, but have never gotten up in the middle of the night to eat ice cream, or driven to town on a binge quest, or stolen my kid's candy or purged or used extreme restriction, or laxatives, or hidden what I ate. Food does have strong social, familial aspects and chemical influence, no doubt there. I have great respect for those that do struggle with any addiction, it's horrid and hard to admit to and overcome and bravo to those that work at it, make mistakes and work at it some more, as we are all a work in progress and have much to learn from each other. Being an adult to me means taking responsibility for my actions past and present. I hope I am always a work in progress. (Whew! Crawling off soapbox now)
  5. I eat, because I need to eat but I just don't want to and I'm bored silly with it. It is a struggle to stay interested in getting it done. I'm tired. My sex drive has not increased (as promised and you know who you are out there!!!) Over easy egg, 1/4 piece of rye toast. A cheese stick. 1/3 cup cottage cheese. 2 slices of lean ham. 2 oz of baked chicken with broth and a couple carrot rounds and a teaspoon of peas. And it's a struggle. Isopure half a bottle, lots of crystal light. And weight loss is crawling like a 100 year old three legged tortoise. (Yes this is somewhat a prohibition pity-party)
  6. You can get immediate release wellbutrin and just take it more frequently - call and get a new scrip. Build back up to the regular dose. I didn't take mine until I could swallow pills which was only 4 days, then took a 100 in the am and a 100 in the afternoon for a week, then added the third 100 dose. Otherwise by 3 weeks you may find yourself in a big old puddle on the floor from all the wacky hormones from weight loss and surgery in general. Especially if you live where it is dark at 4:30 pm and you get little actual sun exposure.
  7. Is the trip a straight 9 hour drive or leisurely? You will need to stretch, nap, and stay hydrated - sip almost constantly. Can you lie down for part of it or are you traveling alone? Not moving around will make your digestion slow down, and any constipation worse. I don't think I could have done 9 hours at once and I had an easy recovery. Pack a cooler with ready-made shakes and drinks, take vitamins, and stool softeners with, maybe anti-nausea meds, your surgeon's phone number, etc. Good luck.

    Concerned For My Wife

Does she attend support groups, or is there a counselor? The mental game is hard, maybe she is insecure since your surgery is coming up and she doesn't know how to handle you following the rules and her not following the rules. Food addiction is hard. Maybe some books from the library by Geneen Roth lying around and then not nagging about it. Maybe her fat is protecting her from feeling her fears that comes with weight loss... Hang in there and good luck w your surgery, don't let her issues derail you but don't hold it over her head either.

    Does BMI matter?

Contact your insurance and ask them to email you the exact requirements for qualifying. A few states require insurance to cover wls, but there are still restrictions on the qualifying criteria. Many above 40 BMI with no comorbidities or 35-40 only with comorbidities. Some require you to not gain during the 6 month nutrition appointments, some require a percentage of weight loss during the 6 month time frame, and some require 5 years of documented failed attempts at weight loss. So you need to ask very specific questions and use email so you have written proof of those answers - it helps if you have to appeal a denial. Then surgeons may have their own requirements, even if my insurance did not have a 6 month pre-op requirement, my surgeon did have one. And that 6 months is valuable to get your head around how you use food and your relationship to food and life actually. It's 90% a mental game.

    Why no meat????

It's a shame there are no actual hardcore standards on this. We can all pontificate as to the reasons our particular surgeon requires all liquids, or a combo diet pre-op but I don't believe there is hard evidence on it. My friend could eat up to 3 days prior, then only clear liquids and she had no complications. And her post-op food stages advanced faster than mine as well. People with higher BMI's may have fattier livers and may benefit greatly from the liver reduction diet thus making surgery safer for them to follow it strictly. It does help with carb cravings to go low or no carb during the pre-op and make you less hungry for the next couple weeks. The reason it teally sucks the first few days is because of depleting glycogen stores in the liver and carb withdrawal. It still sucks no matter what. I had 8 days of shakes and 2 no cal clear liquids. But I cheated, I ate tuna 3 or 4 times during that 8 days because the shakes were not filling to me and I nearly passed out several times, and post-op, I had the same problem but did NOT risk compromising the sleeve sutures by cheating then, no way. And it sucked of course, but you will survive. What helps is that even liquids are difficult right after surgery and for me, I wasn't and still am not hungry. I need to eat and can tell my stomach is empty and I need food but the desire to eat is just gone. I can tolerate most foods on my plan - chocolate sf pudding or hot chocolate - NO...lol which might be a good thing, in fact sweet stuff seems unappealing pretty much right now. We are adults and need to decide what the risk is, how important is the goal. Good luck to those waiting for surgery.

Where Am I at 2 Months 5 Days out

You are doing great (from one grandma to another)!!!! And I am a tad jealous of that most excellent loss since surgery!!!

You are just cute as a button!!! Congrats!!! Keep up the hard work.

    Anyone vape here?

Nicotine can cause ulcers and majorly slows healing. My Dr will not operate on any smoker/vaper unless you have quit at least 12 weeks prior and never take it up again.....you need to just quit, get some help for that please.

    1 Month POST-OP, did i develop GERD???

So sorry you are getting reflux. I would def not drink milk first thing in the morning, maybe warm decaf tea - the warm liquid will relax those stomach muscles a little. And try diff meds for it, some people work better on different brands/types. Good luck.

    SURGERY DAY TOMORROW 12/11!!

Good luck Debbie! Ask for a scopolamine patch behind your ear before you go down to surgery - it prevented nausea and lasts 3 days. Sip slowly and often and walk as soon as you can. You will burp and fart for a couple weeks and your gut will be loud enough to hear across the room! And you will be tired, you will feel great and then suddenly just hit a wall of exhaustion - just take a nap as often as you need to. Good luck.

    Progress

Yay! @BrandiceLeSha - you look good! We have the same starting weight (although I am waaaay older than you lol). And at 6 wks out I weigh 195 - it has been in slow motion lately - one pound/week the last 3 weeks...ugh!!!
  18. Being a " ho" is still being a tool no matter how ya spell it....😆
  19. You are beautiful, and congrats on wanting to fix the issues. I think at this point it is deeper than the small weight gain - maybe should get some counseling. Your work might have a program through insurance that could be a starting place. You need coping skills that keep you from destructive behavior, and to learn to be kind to yourself. You need to be able to see the 'red flag' behavior in relationships and not get stuck in that again, maybe even AA or Codependants Anonymous. Or some books by Melody Beattie. Good luck.

    Stalled and stuck

So sorry Dianna that you are so sick with this surgery 🤐💖. I would keep calling the surgeon's office about the vomiting issue. Maybe a medication change? IDK, just sending hugs.
  21. Kudos to your success!
  22. @Redd73 I cooked veg and garlic in beef bone broth and strained them out added a dash of cayenne....in chicken bone broth I cooked some cabbage, onion, spinach, added a tsp of lemon juice and a dash of cayenne. I liked Jay Robb dreamsicle shakes, and Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or punch - they are tart and good on ice, can dilute w half a glass of crystal light lemonade. Hang in there, it feels like 10 years to be consuming liquid diet but it gets better on the 'other side' by week three....chin up!
  23. I do read generally that bmi needs to be 35 w comorbidities on most policies, and high cholesterol was not considered one on mine. I wish you well on your surgery.

    Stalled and stuck

Dehydration can cause the dizziness as well as lack of nutrition. You don't state how many grams of protein or liquids you are consuming. A deficit of either will also cause the stall to last longer. If you work retail, how often are you able to eat/drink during your shift? You need something every hour to drink and every 3 to eat in these early stages. How is urine ouput and color? Try warm tea, or popsicles for fluid or crystal light half and half w a clear protein drink in a thermal cup.
