2017 Study: "Bariatric surgery patients vulnerable to opioid dependence"
Sosewsue61 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The article is not very informative and only one survey...I find the findings odd. How would you prescreen for that? Considering there was no prior abuse, it would be a near impossibility to predict who would develop a dependency. I think if the preop has severe pain from obesity related joint issues that addressing pain management closer would help find the correct medication - whatever that ends up being. Some opiod use for pain management is very necessary. A friend has severe pain and depression from botched TKR in both knees, and would not function at all without the hydrocodone. That to me is NOT opiod abuse but pain management. -
Dump the sugar and simple carb laden foods, no soda, alcohol, added sugar, etc and then add some exercise. Do all that first if you have not already done that. I made all those significant small changes first, then went harder. The week I attended the seminar I ditched the diet coke, done. Then let go of pasta, rice, any bread except rye and then only one piece toasted once a day, etc. These changes are pretty much permanent. To go hardcore to get to your most important goal - which is surgery scheduled - you may need to go lean protein and vegetables sooner - which is the lifestyle we all have after surgery anyway. You don't need the shake routine until your doc says do the shake routine, unless for you that seems easier. Me - I would rather have tuna or chicken than a shake. Good luck.

So some of you have heard me extoll the virtues of one of my favorite pastimes - square dancing. I have been dancing at state conventions(IA MN), a Mayfest festival, and late last month at National - a nearly week long affair. Well I have overdone it, I had a TKR on my right knee 9 years ago, and it was giving me mega pain. So I made an appt with my ortho to see what was up. Xrays. Exam. Nothing huge - phew! Imflammed bursa. Getting a shot. The PA giving me my shot, marked the spot for the shot with a small dot. She came back w syringe loaded and explained it all, said now because you have small legs (she said SMALL LEGS)(OMG) (did she say SMALL LEGS?) you might see a bulge of the fluid on the side here!!! I heard nothing after she said small legs...lol

Need advice and encouragement not ripped apart
Sosewsue61 replied to lisalou1968's topic in The Gals' Room
@lisalou1968 - hang in there. You can message me as well. We will support you and get you up to speed on navigating this forum and all that. You might want to go to the library and request some books by Geneen Roth. She helped me to figure out my pain from eating my emotions, to like myself and see the value for being me. I am not picking on you here, but you picked an alcoholic for a reason you don't yet understand. Good riddance but you need to figure this out before you even think about another relationship or you will pick another person that is a problem. Try reading 'Co-dependant No More' by Melody Beattie. I know all this because I was married to an alcoholic for 18 years, and I was an abused child. It will get better. You will get better. -
5mo post partum HELP!!!
Sosewsue61 replied to FrenchieAndTheSleeve's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
The sleeve is likely intact and you are not minding the 'rules'. Like dense protein first, then veg...no drinking liquids for 30 minutes. You will have to keep your fluid and nutrition adequate while breastfeeding - don't mess that up by severe calorie restriction. Go back to strict 6 small meals a day of nutritious food. Log everything like right after surgery. Just before feeding the baby, get some deli meat for yourself as a lettuce wrap...etc. -
Lol. No! So I went shopping at Kohls like a grinning eejit....bought a clearance pair of Vera Wang jeans for $10 - SIZE 12petite. Still grinning.

Best way to introduce eggs into the diet

Just soft scramble worked for me, but like one bite.... -
@musicislyfe - you never post a day of eating or anything except the cry for help. We can't help w/o more information from you - so get back on the forum and spill it!!!! Do you food journal? Do you see a nutritionist regularly - if not, why not? Do you use an app on your phone to track food intake - if not download one right now - Baritastic or myfitnesspal are free. Do you have a gym membership, or at least sign up for a class or two, or hire a trainer from the gym to design a workout that you will commit to. Buy a bicycle, take up martial arts, join a hiking club, take dance lessons. Buy a fitbit and track your steps - build up the numbers every week. Learn to cook and shop for food. You are young, so I assume you live at home and your mom cooks - but you need to learn how to do this so you can be the one responsible for your journey yourself. Have you let slider foods back in, drinking sodas, more treats than vegetables, poor choices when eating out, having trouble resisting when you are around your friends? These are all things that you need to PLAN for - make a plan ahead of time, have a conversation with yourself about how you will handle these situations in order to succeed with getting to goal. This journey is not linear, there will be losses, and stalls, a pound up, then 3 down, a stall, then 5 down, then 1 down, etc. You can do this, but it will always be work and there is no magic involved. Just the magic of you!!!

My doc said you could take the occasional nsaid after healing from vsg as long as it was temporary - not long term for arthritis or anything like that. They prefer tylenol but that stuff never works in the otc dosage for pain for me.

Maintaining weight to get approved?
Sosewsue61 replied to GirlShrinking's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, some insurance companies have strict requirements. No gain during 6 months supervised nutrition appointments. Must be 41 bmi with no comorbidities or 35-40 with comorbidities. Some have required FIVE years of failed documented weight loss records. So yes, I would have resorted to whatever means needed to qualify. People have lost below the required weight but put rolls of quarters in their pockets or ankle weights under their slacks to qualify. -
Oh eff them all......start asking them personal questions, shuts them up really fast - 'so how was your last appointment at the gyno?' (proctologist, prostrate exam, ear wax removal, root canal) 'how much money did your ex get in the divorce anyway? That much, huh? Somehow weight issues get an open season on opinions that are no one's beeswax.

New Guy here, from Macon, GA and nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers

Hi welcome. Look up @JerseyJules on here or @BigViffer for a guy's perspective, and Jules has great youtube videos out there. Good Luck -
In my surgeon's program everyone has to have 6 months supervised nutrition appointments, keep a food and exercise journal, apnea evaluation, cardiac clearance, psych eval, blood tests, EDG, etc before a date for surgery is set - it takes 6-7 months for all of that. Each surgeon is different, each state's medicaid program is also different. Medicaid in Illinois does not cover nutrition appointments and that $385 must be paid out of pocket up front - then the rest is covered - a good deal considering the bill is $61,000 total.

How do I eat healthy when my family doesn't?
Sosewsue61 replied to luckyducky's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@luckyducky - who in the house makes menu decisions? Are you the mother, or a sibling/etc? Who cooks? I could resist the bulk cereal, just eat your bf before or after they eat and have them put everything away. Have a separate space for the other items - like desserts in the freezer or maybe stored in another part of the house. Again just eat at different times from them, fix your own food. Make a list for the shopper for what you need. You are not saying what regular meals consist of - only mentioning those items and not 'what's for dinner?' -
I love my spanx cami bra, Kohls has neen out of stock for it for awhile now, good to know Walmart has them online, thanks! Ah geez - get my hopes up - just looked ' out of stock' 'or no longer making' - was what I got on websites.

Teacher? Or support staff? Sitting, bending, lifting? You can't pick up anything with any weight for many weeks. Being dehydrated is a big risk, unless you can drink/sip constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY the first few weeks you risk hospitalization with an IV. I was dizzy and needed naps the first two weeks, not much pain but serious adjustments to getting fluids, lots of gas - I'm talking blow acrossed the room tuba gas, and difficulty pooping. I would also suggest surgery two weeks earlier or take two weeks off work.

I can't make a decision
Sosewsue61 replied to CashmereAndBones's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
At first I mourned volume eating, but not so much anymore. Food becomes less important as a destination - I am going out to dinner tonight - an annual thing with a group of girlfriends - it is now just to enjoy being with them as a stree-free evening. We always go to a high end place, have wine, appetizers, entrée and dessert. I will not order all that, I will order some though. I looked at the menu yesterday - and I will get an appetizer as my entrée, skip wine - have ice tea or maybe even a diet coke, and have three bites of dessert and bring the rest home for my husband. What I WILL do though is get ALL dressed up, made up, and soak up the compliments, catch up on everyone's happinesses and sorrows - it's not really the food. -
I can't make a decision
Sosewsue61 replied to CashmereAndBones's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stay in therapy to explore all these issues and more. Some bariatric patients develop ED after surgery, or have a reappearance of one, it does happen. Anyone can lose weight, most of us have had great success at losing weight, me included - this surgery helps KEEP the weight off, it changes the metabolism and the hormones. I am still on the journey to my goal - I will get there. I wish you all the best. I am not dissuading you from a modeling career but just cautioning you that that path is rife with extreme body criticisms, chasing perfection, and prime for ED dysfunction. Have a plan B in place and stay in therapy. -
Yes! I had two pair of cute capris - lilac and lt teal....Oooo! Tried them on and too big even for belting...lol I just gave a bag of clothes away and have two more that need to go!

Will I be able to get the Surgery
Sosewsue61 replied to SummerEssence's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Did you have sleep study done? Sleep apnea is a comorbidity. Does your insurance NOT cover bariatrics at all, or only with comorbidities? Or a certain bmi? Many say over 40 bmi w no comorbidities or above 35 with comorbidities. At any rate, you could always go to Mexico for cheaper surgery. This surgery with its physical restriction is a great tool, you still have to work at it, but keeping the weight off will be much easier -
Stay busy....walks, showers, baths, naps, cleaning - stay out of the kitchen, don't watch tv with food commercials, don't drive by Lonestar Steakhouse and smell the grilling!!!! It sucks, but you will survive...

It could be a stricture, it could be irritation from acid reflux? If it continues for 2 or 3 more months I would ask to be scoped or barium swallow. Try warm liquid just before eating so see if it relaxes the stomach muscle some.
