Yoga and Exercising Post-Op

My surgeon ordered walking 3x per day starting in the hospital. Anything above that he said to wait 4 weeks. -
False scale readings?
fruitandveggies replied to mrsroyale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
+1 to everything everyone else said, but also the humidity in the air, if you took a shower or bath, if you worked out, if you pooped, how much salt your food had, etc. It's so incredibly sensitive! I'm fascinated by it, so I weigh every day. I like to know what foods make me retain water or the impact the weather has on my weight. -
Constantly reheating food.

I have a similar gadget to @DropWt4Life, a hot plate: https://www.amazon.com/Mastrad-A04100-Magma-Plate-Black/dp/B003K05OBM/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1505310562&sr=8-12&keywords=plate+warmer You nuke it for 2 minutes and it stays hot for a long time. The only thing is, if you have a cold house, the top of the food will still get cold. So I like to make sure I stir it up as I eat. Good point about the steps though! -

Tomorrow I am cleared to eat anything. What veggies did you eat first?
fruitandveggies replied to mamamac2's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
My surgeon orders protein shakes for two weeks only, then never again. Thank goodness, I HATE them! I guess my first veggie was mashed potatoes and god they were glorious! I couldn't eat raw veggies for 7 weeks, so I just had a lot of cooked veggies and fruit. I found out quickly that broccoli wasn't my friend. Now around 7 months out I can have a little bit if I chew it very well. I think it's important to add veggies so every meal, so I would cook spinach into things, cooked carrots, tomatoes, etc. -
Need info on vitamins

Yeah my NUT said 2x your daily value. I take the myKind prenatal because it has the correct amount of iron. I also take the myKind chewable vitamin D and b12 spray. -

Update: it has been a few days of me eating around 1,000 calories (I started a couple days before I posted here) and I'm already down about 8 pounds (and got into onederland!). I guess I really was eating too much. Thanks for all your advice guys! -

My fave way to prep tofu is to bake it into cubes. You can throw it into anything and it's tasty! The keys are this though: Buy extra or extra extra firm tofu (not silken) Pressing out all the water first (I have a tofu press, but you can also use two plates with a heavy thing stacked on top) Freezing (at least a few hours) Thawing Marinating The freezing gives it the best meaty texture, it's so much better that way, IMHO. You can marinate in anything you like (check out this page for a few ideas), or you can just toss in a bit of olive oil and bake for 25 mins at 400 degrees (and check here for more details). One other tip, if you want to make something like a tofu scramble (a vegan classic--here's a few recipes), don't press and freeze. Just drain the extra water from the box and throw in your pan, breaking it up into crumbles as you cook. -

Thank you, that makes total sense! And you are probably right about my NUT, plant foods are just much more easy to digest, so I can eat more without getting that uber-full feeling. More likely culprit: I could definitely stop a few sliders I've let creep back in (hello, crackers and chips). -
For those of you 6+mos out Carbonation
fruitandveggies replied to Aginn10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hmm, well I was never a big drinker of anything outside of water to begin with. So, naturally, I have no interest in soda. But as for sugary foods, that did change some. I still like it, but I don't feel that intense craving for it. Salty stuff though...I think it's worse. I just can't handle myself around chips and crackers! It's weird. -

I didn't know that! I just recently realized my RMR has gotten much lower now and I never did any adjustment for that. I was eating like I was still 300 pounds trying to lose weight. Why do you think the bypass means the scale stops sooner? And honestly, I've only been "stalled" for maybe 3 weeks, I've been losing verrrrry slowly. It just seemed so abrupt to go from losing around 12-15 lbs a month to losing about 3-4 in a month (August). So it could be a normal stall, but also it is likely the amount of calories I'm eating. My NUT doesn't help at all here, she says I don't need to worry about calories or count anything. Which sounds great but I have no idea how I'm supposed to loose weight like that now that I'm much smaller! -

It doesn’t bother me at all. I drink carbonated water sometimes and champagne on occasion with no issue. -
Best way to Stop Losing Weight
fruitandveggies replied to Apple1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks, @Berry78 that's good advice. I am prepared that 120 might not be where I end up. I chose that based on the last time I lost this much weight, I was 145 pounds and a size 14. I felt like losing another 25 pounds would put me in normal sizes (no proof, just guessing). I'm also small framed, according to the wrist test, so that was another factor in that estimated goal. My doctor said the same thing, she basically said that the honeymoon will probably stop around 180 for me. My mom had RNY and has been maintaining at 170 for a couple of years with no exercise. I am prepared to do the hard work to get down to a lower weight (somewhere in the 120's I'm thinking, but we'll see how I feel when I'm closer), but I need to figure out the right amount of calories to make that happen. I'm definitely not ready to settle yet, I'm not happy living my life in a size 18/20. Though it's better than a 24/26 any day! -
Best way to Stop Losing Weight

Hmm, good question. It looks like I have a little bit, yes. On August 18 I was a 37" waist, now I'm 36.5. Lost about half an inch on my bicep, thigh, and hips, too. I imagine that I do have a tiny deficit going still, but I'm far from where I want to be so I want to bump that deficit up to speed up the weight loss. It's interesting to see what people are eating for maintenance, but of course I know it depends a lot on the individual makeup. The RMR calculator says I'm at 1636, but who knows how accurate that is! I need to get the RMR/DEXA tests done. -
Best way to Stop Losing Weight
fruitandveggies replied to Apple1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is such a fascinating thread, thanks for starting it! I'm currently in active weight loss, but I'm stalled out right now. I believe I've been eating too much, my range is 1500-1800 daily, with about 3-4 intense workouts a week (burning about 700 cals each). I'm 7 months out, but I think I'm at a maintenance level of calories now because my weight loss has totally stopped. Good to see how much you guys are eating for reference! -
Still struggle with binging mindset
fruitandveggies replied to Monasmle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yay, that's awesome! I also had extremely bad BED before my bypass. I read everything on the topic, listened to every podcast, went to multiple therapists, but I just wanted that numb feeling you get from a binge more than anything else. By the way, if you haven't read Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen, do it--it's a game changer! Just the other day I found myself buying stuff for a binge (albeit much, much smaller amounts). One of my faves was a giant box of tater tots from the Whole Foods hot bar. I got some, got to my car and started chowing down, not using the the bite timer I usually do when I eat. Well at about tater tot 6, I got so incredibly sick I had no desire at all to eat anymore. The idea of eating more was actually infuriating at the moment! I don't usually dump, but if I eat too fast I get very nauseous. And that's one big thing about BED--you eat really fast. I'm hoping that this feeling will stick around long enough to train me to hate eating that way (I'm 7 months out). I love your technique of eating your healthy food first and then seeing what happens...going to try that, thanks! -
Woohoo, happy pumpkin season! Just harvested my first two from the garden!

Vitamis D level too low
fruitandveggies replied to Joei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, that should do the trick! Yeah, it wasn't an issue for me, so hopefully won't be for you. Good luck! -
Yay!! Great job, you look amazing! I just recently hit my 100 lbs too, and close to your numbers. Waiting to get into onederland like you!

Vitamis D level too low
fruitandveggies replied to Joei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of course everything is up to your doc/insurance, but no I don't think it should be an issue. My vitamin D was 12 --- it's supposed to be 30 (!!!!) and they still did the operation, no issue. I am now up to normal level, woot! You should be fine, though you should ask them to put you on an Rx dose of D (50,000 IU per week). -

fruitandveggies replied to TRI Guy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! I was weak and tired for about a month. It got a little better day by day but I didn't feel a whole lot better until I was able to start consuming some decent calories. -
Rate of weight loss?
fruitandveggies replied to Yettid's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've lost 105 lbs over about 7 months, so about 3.5 lbs per week. But it hasn't actually been 3.5 lbs per week, some weeks I'm up 5, some weeks I'm down 10. My loss has slowed down a lot now that I'm around 200 pounds. You will probably loose at a slower rate since you're already pretty small. But hey, slow is better than nothing! And for me, this was about KEEPING the weight off. I've lost hundreds of pounds before, but never kept it off. This should be a tool to help with that. -
Diabetic Binge Eater Here

I'm not diabetic but struggled with BED for years. Check out the book Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen. It seriously changed my life! She also has a workbook to go along with it.
