21 and Brand New to the Site
Susanbee replied to Bananalee's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Make sure your insurance covers WLS....weight loss surgery...some insurances don't cover....go to a seminar..if you find a surgeon they probably offer the seminar..you BMI is high enough for gastric bypass and lap band....you are so young....go with the band...it is slower weight loss but it isn't so drastic....to your system. -
Why am I keeping it Quiet???
Susanbee replied to sandibly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hate the fact that you/I can't do what we want without others looking at us...let's be an inspiration ... -
I would ask to speak to Dr. McCloskey....she's the one the really knows. Since you don't have any restriction I don't see why you need to be unfilled. I think the problem would come if you felt restriction and something would get stuck. But....i'm not a dr.....good luck....tell us what happened.....i'd like to know how the situation was handled...susan

Why am I keeping it Quiet???
Susanbee replied to sandibly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almost impossible to keep it to yourself if you eat with others. If others were watching me the first thing they would have noticed is the Diet Coke addiction was gone. Yogurt and cottage cheese for lunch...what happened to the pizza and chips. And what do you mean you are going to take 1/2 your lunch to walk....yes you must tell or they will commit you!!! -
that is what happened to me....the fill dr didn't prime the tube leading to the band...long story short the saline was in the tube not in the band....
-
yes, as soon as i had my fill i scheduled my next one....i'm going on vacation on week 3 and 4 so I had to make it for week 5....i can live with that...the doctors office made appointments for the first year..at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 month, 6 months and a year...but this isn't enough...I think as the patient you have to be proactive and go after it.....now you have me wondering if i can call in and ask for kelly do my fills....i really don't want rachel doing them....
-
Rachel gave me my first fill and didn't prime the tube...so the fill wasn't in the band it was in the tube. Kelly corrected the mistake...but I ran around for 3 weeks with no fill....really hope to have kelly do my fills from now on. The problem with fills every 3 weeks is that you can't get an appointment.

Why am I keeping it Quiet???
Susanbee replied to sandibly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was banded in april 08. I didn't discuss my banding with anyone except my husband, daughter 21 and son 17. I asked them not to tell anyone. I wanted the decision to be mine. Truthfully I didn't care what anyone else thought. They aren't the ones carrying and extra 150 pounds. As I went to the 6 month nutrition classes i felt like i was doing the right thing for me.That's what was important. The day before my surgery I told my mom, brothers, and sister. Most were supportive....one wanted me to go on a diet and exercise....yea right....anyway. I called 3 of my best friends on a 4 way call and told them. I just didn't want them to worry if they heard i was in the hospital. By this time I was very happy and sure of my decision that I could handle whatever they said. After the surgery I told those that I work with....anyway everything worked out. I'm glad I waited to tell everyone. It is your decision. Don't be discouraged. This is the best thing I ever did for myself. i wish I had the opportunity to do it years ago. Since April I lost 40 pounds......100 plus to go -
i also got banded by dr mccloskey...i've been told that i can go back every 3 weeks for a fill.

Sorry to hear you and others had such a bad fill experience. My dr. numbs my port site with a tiny little needle before the fill. I feel a small pinch. Then when she comes at me with the fill needle, which is very long, I don't feel a thing. I've had 2 fills so far and no bad experiences. Maybe that is a question we should be asking prior to having the band, will the dr numb the area before the fill?
-
I can't imagine a fill without numbing .....I don't want to see that long needle coming at me. My dr. numbs thank God. The worst part of the entire process is the pinch of the numbing needle...but really no big deal.

Weight and Exercise equiptment.
Susanbee replied to Froggi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do not have an answer to your question....but I do have a quick story about weight limits. At my place of work I got written up for standing on a chair to hang something up instead of using a ladder. The letter stated the saftey of the ladder...lalalalalala....anyway I took great pleasure in asking my employer to buy us different ladders because the one they gave me to use had a weight limit of 225 and I weighed 265. Needless to say I can stand on whatever I want..... -

Should I stay in the hospital overnight?
Susanbee replied to Sofia Bell's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
stay....i got pain meds through the iv and it made it much better -
let me give you my take on the subject.....I weight 267 and had a bmi of 42. My dr said i could have either. I was considering bypass just because i knew i would work. But I really wanted the band because of recovery time, less cutting and reversable. i pondered this for months and on 4/4 i was banded. i have lost over 35 pounds and feel great. Yes there are rules but one can live with them. I was a diet coke nut. Now i eat my fruit last with my meal....it waters down my meal....I'm loving my band and so thankful for it. I have had one fill and don't get hungry at all.....good luck with your decision.

I was banded by Dr. Carol McCloskey at Magee women's hospital. All of the doctors in Magee's group seem to be good. Dr. McCloskey was fantastic and I'm so glad I went to Magee. They specialize in WLS so they have it down to a science. I was in the hospital overnight.....pain meds were offered to control the pain. the staff was very reposive. I was on a wing of all wls patients. Pre surgery....one day of liquids....post surgery.....2weeks liquids...2weeks mushie....then regular food.....also when i left the hospital I had appointments for fills for the next year.....Like i said they have it together.....if you have any questions please email me.....susan

I was banded on 4/4 as of today I'm down 32 pounds. I had my first fill on May 12. I have been able to eat anything I want....which isn't a good thing. I do get full a lot faster and I'm not hungry....that's a good thing. I get another fill on June 30....or my doctor will do it in 3 weeks from May 12 if need be. I eat small portions but could eat more......everyone keep up the good work.

I am a teacher, 5th grade. I was banded on Friday 4/4 and went back to work April 17 Thursday for parent conf. and 1/2 friday April 18. Started back full time April 21 . Some say they go back in a few days. I wasn't ready. I'm glad I had 2 weeks. I'm glad I waited especially because you have to change the way you eat. I really had little pain and was up moving pretty good in a few days.
