  1. I'm sorry I can't offer any insight to the revision aspect of your question, but I had my sleeve done on an outpatient basis! I walked into the hospital at 7:30 AM and walked out at 6:00 PM (with some help). I was able to go to the restroom by myself within hours of waking up from surgery. From my experience, a hospital stay wouldn't be out of the question. You'll be uncomfortable and possibly having a hard time getting/keeping liquids down. Having people to help is very important. My boyfriend was with me almost at all times for the next 4 days or so, making sure I get in liquids, helping me get around, and making sure I walked and used the incentive spirometer every hour for maybe 12-14 hours each day. I can assure you; it's very nice, possibly necessary, to have people around who care.

    6 days post-op

You're doing fine! I'm 6 days post op too and totally understand what you're feeling! Get some rest if you're feeling tired, go for a walk if you're feeling anxious, maybe binge watch some vsg youtube videos if you just feel like you can't do anything else. On top of water, low cal drink mixes, and protein shakes, I've enjoyed sugar free jello, greek yogurt, and soups so far! Tomorrow I get to start pureed food and Shelly's Baked Ricotta is high on the list of things I'd like to try. We'll get through this. We had an idea of what we were getting into and we knew that we needed a big change to help get ourselves to where we want to be. Let's work towards that and remember that the unpleasant things we're feeling now are temporary.
  3. Hi all, So I'm scheduled to get sleeved in May and am self pay so I didn't need prior weight loss or psych evals (the consultation was enough for the surgeon to ok me). However, I'm still really interested in talking to someone prior to and after surgery about binge/emotional eating, the changes I'll experience as I lose the weight, etc. My dietician stressed that I should confront my emotional ties to food now. I've found that in the past I'd yoyo between obsessing over every single calorie and starving myself or just giving up and eating junk. I've got a therapist through my college who emphasizes practicing mindfulness to help handle my emotional eating. Is that really all it takes? Am I just not applying myself enough to this method? Because while it's helped in other facets of my life, it hasn't necessarily done much for my relationship with food. Should I find another therapist, perhaps one with more experience with people with food issues? I've heard good and bad things about overeaters anonymous. What are your opinions? What helped you gain a healthy relationship with food?
  4. Thanks for the information everyone! I've been keeping a more detailed food journal and started including what was going on around the time of each meal. It turns out I'm a massive stress eater and eat way too much junk while studying. I've also found that almost all of the calories I eat in a day are after 6 PM, despite me being up in the early morning. As part of my trying to start getting ready for the sleeve, I've found that eating slower (by chewing at least 20 times each bite) really helps me consume less too! I'll have to read up on some of Geneen Roth's books and I'll definitely look more into intuitive eating, they sound like exactly what I need! My Surgery is the first week of my summer break so I'll get to recover and relearn how to eat/live while only taking 1 course over the summer instead of the 5 I am now.

    Sip your Veggies

What do you think about juicing? I use it to replace some meals now (I'm pre-op) and to get more veggies in. The main difference is that there isn't as much insoluble fiber as there would be in a smoothie (so not as much volume). I feel like it would be good for a bariatric patients who can't consume large amounts of foods. Opinions?

    DNA and Weight

My carrier statuses weren't my primary reasons for taking the DNA test, but it was nice to know that I don't have variants for any of the conditions they test for. There are 41 including sickle cell anemia and tay-sachs. If you're interested in susceptibility to cancer, you can download the raw data of your DNA from the 23andme website and upload it to Promethease for $5 to analyze. This will give you much more health related information.

    How is 'Rank' determined

I see your surgery date above your profile picture on the desktop version of the site. On a computer, you'll want to click the drop down menu that has your username on it (it'll be in the upper right corner) then click on My Surgery. You'll be able to edit the information there

Loose Skin After Surgery At 20 Years Old

Sorry for reviving such an old post, but I'd love to see update pictures or learn some loose skin tips if anyone is willing to share!
  12. I'm concerned about how well I'll be able to perform my academic duties during clinical rotations after surgery. I've read that people have to constantly sip fluids through the day. Is this for the rest of our lives? I'm currently in the phase when I'm competing for a seat in the program so clinicals wouldn't be until Fall of 2019 at the soonest. I'm looking at getting a VSG this summer. That many years out, do any sleevers go without food or drink for up to 3 or 4 hours? I might be able to sneak sips in some settings, but if I'm in the OR, I can't keep stepping out or bring a drink with me.
  13. Thanks! The surgery is something I really want/need and I think it will really help me improve my health and my general performance, but it's also not reversible so I'm just making sure I've got all the info. Are you happy with your surgery? How has it affected you and your academic performance?
