Typical meal a year out from RNY?
blondie66 replied to LaLa Ladybug's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 2 years post op this summer. At one year I could eat most foods but in smaller portions. Protein is very filling I couldn't eat more then 2 or 3 bites of a steak or chicken. If you eat too much you will vomit. Normally dumping has stopped by 1 year unless you drink or eat too much of something very high in sugar. But you can share a dessert with someone just don't eat it all or you'll vomit and or dump Now coming up on two years I can eat a small steak but it's very filling I prefer to have fish. I just had a bagel with butter and coffee when creamer for breakfast. I don't normally go to buffets as I can't eat enough to justify the money! But most people can't even tell I've had the surgery by what I eat. They just know that I'm not a big eater. If having dinner out I don't eat everything off my plate. -
Happens to me if I eat too much at one sitting especially protein. Sometimes I'll go vomit and then feel much better.

December bypass buddies

To help your body reset its set point weight make sure you are exercising daily and cut out wheat.... no bread, crackers... and keep sugar low and you'll lose. Make sure you're getting your 2 protein shakes in day. And the longer you can stay off alcohol the better. The weight lose doesn't stall that much it stalls cause people start eating everything if you stick to no wheat and little sugar you'll keep losing. -
Great that you want to be so supportive!! It really depends on what type of surgery and how big he is to start. If he's having laparoscopic surgery he won't need much support other then trying to follow the diet and getting the protein and vitamins. He'll need to walk everyday. And will probably not need any pain killers other than extra strength Tylenol and Gasex for gas pain. I brought some to hospital and took it while there. He should be able to drive about a week after surgery if he's off the pain killers and of course he won't be able to lift anything heavy for 6 weeks. It's best to check with Drs cause it really depends on his type of surgery and incision and health prior to surgery. From my experience the anesthetic always knocks me out the first 4 days and I don't feel normal till 4 weeks after surgery...but I didn't need a lot of support I just knew I was gonna feel sleepy and not myself for 4 weeks after general anesthesia.

Yes hopefully it helps! I drink water but not 80 ounces more like 24 on a good day. And it took me about a year until I could drink a cup of water at a sitting. I had to wait until my stomach stretched. I used to be able to take small sips only so I was never able to drink anywhere close to 80 ounces! And then you have to wait 30 mins after a meal to drink and then eating every 3 hours like omg how do u get that much water in and eat?! It probably would be good for my skin too. But maybe I'll just have to wait till able to afford skin surgery.
-
That is interesting. I think it's best to stay off it but I do have a couple while at work....something has to keep me awake
-
That's a lot of water! Just one question are you over 50? I'm thinking it's an age thing. If I had the surgery 10 years ago I think my skin might be better.

I'm having my RNY tomorrow morning.

Good luck!! Relax and give yourself time to heal. All the best on your journey! -
I waited the 9 months and drink coffee with creamer now with no issues. Normally just 2 a day. I gave up coffee a few months prior to surgery so went through withdrawal then...instead of waiting till surgery. It can be tough to give up headaches and no energy! I had gastric bypass it might not matter with sleeve.
-
Crepey but creepy works too! Lol
-
Yeah it's best to wait at least 9 months until having alcohol to prevent developing ulcers. And my nutritionist advised no carbonated drinks so no beer...I have a had a vodka cooler but have to be careful of sugar. I can have most wines
-
My nutritionist said coffee was a no no until 9 months post op as can cause ulcers. Maybe a tea better option?

I hear vitamin e oil helps along with dry skin brushing. From my personal experience try some collagen supplements and moisturize like crazy! I also take fish oils they seem to help somewhat. I work out also and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have lots of muscle but it's under loose creepy skin.

Surgery tomorrow - didn't see it until now

Good luck with surgery and your journey! All the best! -
It depends on how much u have to lose. If under 100 pounds I'd do the sleeve if over I'd go with bypass. I had bypass and it's been very helpful in reaching my goals. If you're child bearing age and plan to have a child I'd do a sleeve. I find sleeve you lose quickly but it's much easier to gain back as it doesn't appear to change your blood sugar levels like RNY gastric bypass. If you're diabetic do the RNY. There are many variables. Best to discuss with your surgeon. I initially wanted the sleeve but my surgeon said you're very big so better to do the bypass. I've reached a healthy bmi and feel amazing but I take my vitamins and have my protein daily.

Just a footnote ...if I drink something high in sugar such as one of those crazy sugar filled drinks that Starbucks serves on an empty stomach I'm much more likely to dump. If I'm going have a high sugar drink it's best if I have some food in my stomach then I'm less likely to dump...have no idea why!! I'm almost 2 years post op and never dump with food it's alway a high sugar drink...such as a cooler or milkshake.
-
If you slowly bring sugar into your diet it will adjust if you don't you will dump with sugar as your body hasn't learned to adapt. Not saying that you should eat sugar but it's a choice. I can eat pretty much anything except sucralose...I can have in small servings but have to be careful. I'd still dump if I had too much high sugar in one sitting but you start to realize what's high and just avoid it. A couple of bites is enough.

Interesting liquid diet realization
blondie66 replied to B.Annie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
From my experience I didn't feel hungry till about 9 months post op...it was great!! I'd start to feel a bit weak and empty and knew it was time to eat but no hunger...now hunger is back! -
I was also told that getting to a healthy bmi was unlikely. But I did reach and am maintaining but I have to diet and exercise to reach and maintain it I can't rely on surgery. Also, my stretched out skin adds extra weight that I won't lose under I have skin surgery....it's flabby wrinkled skin which can't be dieted off but probably is about 5 extra pounds. If you want to reach a healthy bmi go for it and do it for you! The drs just want to keep our expectations realistic and they're thinking what is the expected weight loss from surgery they don't include what we are willing to do with diet and exercise to get the remaining pounds off.

Question for those with a lot to lose
blondie66 replied to Sadiebug's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have 10 pounds to my personal goal...if I got any thinner it would look nasty. Unless I have skin removal surgery. People have to remember they will in most cases have lose skin that can't be dieted off and can add a few pounds...more in some cases. I don't have rolls I have wrinkled lose skin that only skin removal will fix and dieting too thin just makes it worse. Hopefully next year I'll be able to afford the surgery. Cause it can be a bit depressing but I focus on my extra energy and how good I feel. -
With surgery you'll lose about 70% of excess weight but anymore will be up to you. Your goal weight is very low see how you feel after a year you may be happier and healthier at a higher weight. Just from my experience my nutritionist said I wouldn't get to a healthy bmi but I did.
-
I'd wait until 1 year for drinking alcohol. I started drinking wine at 9 months and i think it slowed down my weight loss. Also, u might not be able to tolerate carbonated drinks. I know my nutritionist recommended avoiding them. I can tolerate some coolers like 1 or 2 anymore and I'll dump. Cannot stomach beer too gassy...almost 2 years post.
-
I'm thinking you're onto something!!
-
You all sound like you're doing great!! Just an FYI you won't experience dumping until u eat something high in sugar. At beginning during strict diet phase u shouldn't be having more then 15 grams of sugar as you're healing and don't want to have dumping or vomiting at that intense healing phase. When real food comes is when vomiting and dumping can happen as your body adjusts to the new foods. Good luck everyone!
