    Children & surgery

Reading this is so timely for me. I'm scheduled for surgery in a month but can't decided what to tell my kids. They are young - the oldest is 12, but old enough that they will notice me not eating lol. Some explanation will be needed! I guess the problem is that I feel ashamed that I need to do it, that I let things go so far....

    Emotional Eating Substitute

It is hard. I have been careful not to bring junk in the house, so that helps. And I'm trying to find good substitutes for when I want something sweet (sweets are my downfall). I'm liking sugar free popsicles. Confession: My son made Cookies all by himself today for all of us for dessert and I ate one, but only one! Which is amazing for me! They were Peanut Butter, my very favourite! First time having sugar in two weeks and I don't even crave more.

    FEELING THE PRESSURE

I've been working hard at tracking exactly what I eat and I've trying to eat lots of Protein and minimal carbs. My surgery is a week after yours. I'm supposed to lose 5% - so 13 lbs - and am down 8 in just two weeks! I want to make as many healthy changes pre-op as I can! Good luck to you!!

    Guilt.

The day I booked my surgery we had pizza for dinner and ice cream for dessert. Since then I've been working on building new healthier habits.

    Emotional Eating Substitute

I worry about this too. Leading up to my two week diet, I've been strictly following a high-protein/low-carb diet and meticulously tracking my intake. I have to say that holding myself in check has been easier than I thought it would be, because I really don't have a choice. I have to follow the rules. I'm hoping the same will happen post surgery when bingeing simply isn't an option.

    Mexico

Nice to see several people who will be seeing Dr. Ortiz at the OCC! I'll be there in March and will look forward to reading about your experiences!
  10. I'm from Canada and will be heading to Tijuana in March. The quotes I got for private surgery in Canada were all close to $20 000. Surgery in Mexico, plus travel costs will be roughly half of that.

    Still deciding

Newme17 and MelodySG we're all about the same size. My BMI is also 40. I'm 5' 7" though I decided to go with the sleeve because it is less invasive and less chance of complications. My surgery is mid- March. I will keep an eye on how you guys are doing! It's nice to find people who are starting from a similar place. Leading up to the pre-op diet, I'm on an low-carb, big Protein diet and have lost 8 lbs! So happy to be in the 240's this morning!

C pap machine and dry mouth!

I have a nose/mouth mask because I can't breathe through my nose at all. You should be able to adjust the humidity levels and a heated tube really helps.

    Just a reminder

Thank you for posting this! I'm still awaiting surgery, but this is such a good reminder to remember to the real reasons why I am doing this!

    The Ariel Center/OCC

I'm still awaiting surgery so I can't speak to plastics. But, I'm booked for a sleeve at the OCC in March and would LOVE to hear about your experience. Feel free to pm me!

    March Sleevers

I was at first. Seemed like a CRAZY idea. So, I picked one of the expensive Mexico options. The OCC hospital is accredited and everything I've found on the surgeon is positive.

How do you handle people asking questions

I'm struggling with this too. I literally just booked surgery today and am already trying to figure out whether I'll tell people or not. My husband and a couple friends are the only people I've mentioned it to so far and they are supportive. My kids will find out (you know, when I'm gone for 5 days and return not able eat food! lol) and kids aren't very good at keeping secrets, so maybe the easiest route is just to be an open book?
