  1. I'm 3 months post-op RNY and trying to go more plant based. I ate mostly vegetarian prior to surgery, but started eating meat again after because it's higher in protein. I've noticed that I'm not sleeping, constantly lacking energy now and have had several kidney stones recently, which is how I felt when I used to eat meat. My concern is that plant based proteins aren't as high in protein as meat. I've got plant based protein powder, though it's higher in sugar, but I don't want to do protein shakes for every meal/snack. Anyone else follow a plant based diet? What are some good options for protein? Does anyone juice post op?

    So thirsty

I have and he’s not concerned. I’ve had some issues with my kidneys and low potassium since surgery and he checks blood work every week just to be safe. All of my labs are normal and he seems to think it’s just because I drank so much more water before surgery.
  3. I wish there was a good OTC option! I had to resort to mag citrate twice after surgery, but it’s fizzy so you have to let it go flat...and it’s super nasty!! Now I take Linzess daily, plus a stool softener three times a day and drink smooth move tea every night, and I still only go about every 2 weeks. It’s awful!!
  4. Does anyone else ever feel like you just can’t get enough water in? I’m 2 1/2 months post op RNY and definitely getting in at least 64 oz of water every day, but some days I feel like I could chug water all day long and it still wouldn’t be enough. I struggle to get protein in on those days because I’m drinking so much, which I know isn’t good.

    Scale or no scale

No scale for me. I have teenage daughters and feel like it’s a bad idea. I work in a doctors office, so I just weigh myself at work whenever I get the urge.
  6. We had a great time, though I was wiped out when we came back. Ended up in the ER the day after we returned because I was dehydrated and my potassium was super low. Feeling a bit better now, but struggling with food. I’m on the maintenance diet now, but nothing really sits well.

    Am i failing ALREADY!!!???

I’ve hit a stall as well. I had lost 32 lbs at 3 weeks and have lost 2 since then. I’m 6 weeks out and super frustrated. I’m struggling to eat, so I should be losing like crazy.

    Pain

I had my 1 month follow up today and they said the pain is normal. It will probably take another week or so to go away, but it’s from where they staple the muscles together to prevent a hernia. Glad to know it’s normal, but wish it was going to go away sooner.

    Kitchen toys

I have a vitamix that I use every day for smoothies now that I can add fruit and veggies to them. I make a big batch in the morning and portion them into blender bottles and freeze them for later in the day/week.
  10. I can’t handle dairy at all. I have to make my protein shakes with water. I hated any artificial sweetener before, even Splenda. I was worried about what I was going to eat/drink once I couldn’t have sugar. Now it doesn’t bother me at all. I took a very small sip of my daughters sprite this evening and it tasted terrible. Way too sweet!
  11. I will be 4 weeks post-op tomorrow and the pain has been pretty manageable for a week or two. Last night I started with pretty intense, left sided abdominal pain near my ribs. I feel a little bit of a knot and assume it's normal healing, but am wondering if anyone else had this. I've been glued to the heating pad most of the day today because of the pain. It's bad enough that I'm nauseous and I don't have any pain meds left. I've been taking Tylenol with little relief. I do have my 1 month follow up on Monday, so I'm trying to hold out until then. Is this normal?

    Fruit

I ended up getting watermelon at the grocery store yesterday and had a small piece when I felt like my sugar was dropping. What a difference!! I’ve also started adding a couple chunks of mango into my protein shakes and that’s helped too. I did have a light bulb moment last night and realized that I’m hardly getting any calories. My protein shakes have 120 calories, so 3 of those a day isn’t nearly enough. I’ve been so focused on protein and water that I wasn’t even thinking about calories. Now I have a better idea of what all I need to manage and have some food changes to make. This whole process makes me feel stupid. It’s like everything I know went out the window and I’m learning everything new.
  13. We’re leaving next Tuesday for Disney World and I won’t have access to a refrigerator while we are in the parks. Any suggestions for high protein snacks that don’t require refrigeration? I’ll be transitioning to a regular diet the day before we leave, but I’m not sure what to take. I’ll end up picking off my kids plates for meals, but there won’t really be any healthy snack options in the parks.

    Fruit

I’ve had a bowel movement since surgery, but only because I drank mag citrate. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve drastically reduced my caloric intake or what. I’m on the soft food phase, so I can eat a lot of things. I’ll try adding benefiber for now and see if it helps.

    Chapped lips

Chapstick has wax in it, which dries your lips out. Try just Vaseline. Works wonders and gives your lips a little shine.
