PCP is not on board anymore
mjfx2 replied to Ronnie0422's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am doing my medical weight mgmt through the Dr who is going to do the surgery. Hopefully you don't need to start over, but should you maybe taking that route is an option. -
2-Liter .... You are too funny ... Awesome post .... I admire your determination and starting the liquid diet 4 days early ... keep up the terrific job

My surgeon said it is my choice whether i have gastric sleeve or bypass. If I had to decide in this moment, I would say I am doing the bypass. If it was your choice could you help me by responding why you are choosing or chose gastric bypass. My main reason I want to have a fear of dumping so I won't eat foods high in sugar or fat. My fear is that it is riskier because there is more cutting and stitching involved. I also wonder about still feeling hunger because the rest of the stomach is left behind and I will still produce the hormone associated with hunger, with the sleeve it was my understanding is that since they remove a large portion of the stomach, you don't make as much of the hunger hormone. Anybody know anything about that?

Jleiber - how far out from surgery are you?
-
MaggieH2 - I have my next appt next Wednesday. I'll let you know if there are any guidelines to have me lose weight before surgery. If I heard the lady from my insurance plan correctly she said my surgery wouldn't depend on whether I lost, gained or stayed the same. But of course it would be nice if I lost some.

Welcome!!! I'm pretty new here myself. I'm very early on. Had my first appt in January. My insurance requires 6 month medically supervised WL. My last MSWL appt is June. So I am hoping to have bypass surgery in July or August. Were you required to lose weight for the surgery? If so what kind of "program" did you follow?

Thank you everyone for your responses. MaggieH2 I haven't really been instructed to start losing weight I'm guessing that may come at my next Appt ,,, what did you do to lose weight? How much were you able to lose? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Just looking for a word of encouragement

sounds to me you are doing wonderful ..... i would be exactic if I was at your point when I finally get there .... keep up the terrific work !!!! -
@rny-donnalisa I would definitely touch base with the office where you had the surgery through .... I don't know what amount you should be eating but I have heard you work up to 1 cup of food ... but Soup and yogurt may not be considered "food" since they fell under the liquid phase ... but stretching my pouch out is something I definitely fear once I get to the point you are at ... I have also heard some people don't feel full this early on because of nerves being cut I wish you the best - Melissa

From what I read Protein plays an important role. Maybe try increasing your protein. ie unflavored Protein powder mixed in with some foods.

I'm sorry to hear you weren't provided with any guidelines. I googled for you "pureed bariatric diet after surgery". In addition to the link I am going to provide below I would try googling what I did. http://www.upmc.com/Services/bariatrics/approach/post-surgery/diet/Pages/pureed.aspx seemed a good place to start. cut and paste the link Best wishes

What flavorless protein do you recommend? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I've pretty much just started out. I went to an info session and went to my first consultation which counted as my first medical weight mgmt Appt of the 6 I have to do. I really wasn't told to start dieting or anything yet. They gave me a booklet to read over but it didn't give me any diet to follow. What is everyone doing for the weight management required by insurance? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Starting out at age 45? How common?
mjfx2 replied to KS123's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will be 47 when I have gastric bypass in July/August 2017. -
Patticake74 I can totally understand being torn. I am in the same boat. My Doctor told me he would do whichever one I want, sleeve or bypass. He said I was a good candidate for either, but if he was me he'd do the sleeve. The nurse thought I'd be better off with the bypass. I think she felt this way because I am either diabetic or prediabetic (waiting for my recent lab work to come in to hopefully get a final answer). I think that I have binged on sweets in the past played into her opinion. I really want to get the bypass, but am hesitant because I think there are more risk. I feel there is an increase in the chance of a leak, because of more cutting and sewing. I also I think their is a higher chance of malabsorption, possibly higher risk of gallstones, and I can't remember what else. I sort of feel like I am being selfish by wanting to have the bypass. But I feel it is the better choice weight loss wise. You lose more weight with the bypass, lower chance of gaining weight back, and because of dumping I will be more afraid to cheat and eat a sweet.
