It comes out. It's just a form around which the surgeon staples the stomach (for shape).

IF the stomach is producing too much acid, or if the stomach is actually inflamed (gastritis), acid reducers will help. Both of those situations DO result in feelings of hunger. (I think it is a protective mechanism by the body.. food absorbs the acid, and therefore is itself a temporary acid reducer.) If acid/inflamation isn't the problem, then the acid reducer won't help, and it is good to explore what else might be the cause.... I. E. Not enough food, head hunger, too much exercise, too many simple carbs, etc. Some amount of hunger is normal. But being hungry every 30 minutes is not.

Constipation and anal fissures
Berry78 replied to mama3beartn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think post op constipation is the most frequently posted issue. Some people get diarrhea, but constipation is very common. You may want to take extra care talking to your team so they can give you the best recommendations for your situation. -
6 months out and now having gallbladder removed!
Berry78 replied to jayepea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, this is different from my understanding. I have understood the gallbladder stores and concentrates the bile. When a fatty meal is consumed, the gallbladder releases some stored bile. If no fat is eaten, the bile can continue concentrating more and more, forming stones. So since we are looking at this from opposite perspectives, the treatment/prevention would absolutely be different. Guess I have more research to do... -
I ran through the other macros. The carbs in the smoothy are outrageous, so I'll concentrate on the v8

6 months out and now having gallbladder removed!
Berry78 replied to jayepea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jay..you sound like you are being too hard on yourself. Fruit, yogurt, nuts.. sounds like wholesome food maybe the gallbladder has been holding you back. I'm actually curious whether high, moderate, or low fat is beneficial for the gallbladder. So many people that lose weight have problems, but I wonder whether it's the low fat diets that people frequently use that create problems, or whether dietary fat intake has no bearing and that it is some other mechanism at work... -
I bet he was just calculating in his head about whether that should be a problem. He must have decided it was ok, or he would have said something. He may have been making a mental note to check more into it too. Feel free to ask him about it next time On a personal note, my brother also had the condition as an infant, but it never gave him issues later in life. (He wasn't a wls patient though). Does make a good story. Mom took him to the doctor's several times before they believed her..puke everywhere!

How often so you weigh in?
Berry78 replied to maggieO's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
2 months out.. I weigh every day and keep a mental note. Each Monday I write down the lowest # I saw on the scale over the last week. My weight fluctuates a lot on a day to day basis, but I am noticing a pattern. -
I missed where you mentioned the continuing diabetes. So sorry to hear it. But maybe given more time it will get easier to control if not cured. (Hugs)

Complications with Mexico Bariactric Center
Berry78 replied to Purseynursey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm sorry to hear about your complications. Hopefully you will get sorted out soon. I can't speak to the issue of appropriate standard of care, but I wouldn't think they owe a refund. You paid for the surgery and got it. Complications are a risk every patient faces. The surgeon obviously made a judgement call.. and perhaps it was the wrong one in your case, hindsight being what it is. Many band to sleeve revisions are carried out at the same time, so it's not some unusual thing. Hopefully the surgeon will learn something from your case, so as to not make that error in the future (assuming the condition of your stomach was unusually bad and therefore called for a more conservative approach). -
I sneaked a peak at some of your other posts. You've mentioned eating crackers and a mini bagel a while ago. If you are still eating wheat, that has to stop. WHAT you eat is more important than how much or even how often at this point. I have a markerboard in my kitchen. On it I have written: 1. Coffee/vitamins/milk: 9g protein 2. Breakfast smoothie (spinach, fruit, coconut water) OR pint of low sodium V8 3. 1 ounce nuts: 7g protein 4. Egg with beans: 14g protein 5. 4oz meat: 28g protein 6. 4oz cottage cheese: 12g protein Total 70g protein As I get hungry through the day, I check the foods off my list. Sometimes I have my meat first and smoothie at 7pm. It doesn't matter. I just push to get it all in. I'm 9 weeks out, so as I have room, I'll add more non-starchy vegetables. Having a set menu frees me up so I don't have to wonder what to buy at the store, or what my next meal will be. I keep substitutions to a minimum.

That first week is an adrenaline rush from trying to recover on limited calories. Once you can start getting in protein and calories, you should start feeling/sleeping better. Another thing to consider is your thyroid status. Sometimes people can have hyperthroidism, but don't have many symptoms until something like this surgery happens. Congrats on your surgery!

Are you ever afraid you won't lose weight?
Berry78 replied to Abeille213's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I find Dr. Duc Vuong and Dr. Matthew Weiner's videos on youtube inspiring. They talk about all sorts of bariatric-related topics. Instead of getting stuck in your own head with negative thoughts, take the time to explore what people "in the know" are saying. The first question I pose is this: What constitutes failure? The medical definition is the failure to maintain a loss of 50% of excess weight. So for me, I started at 305lbs, a normal weight is 155lbs. Meaning I need to maintain 150lbs÷2=75lbs lost, or 230lbs to be a medical success. Personally I want to be in Onederland, so if I don't make that goal, I will be disappointed in myself... but should I wallow in shame should the scale come to a screeching halt at 210lbs? I could... but how productive would that be? Shame is the quickest way to revert to "the old ways".. and THAT is the quickest road back to 300lbs. I will keep my chin up, be proud of my accomplishments, and keep on keeping on. -
Aww <Hugs!> Maybe go find a nice hot tub to soak in...

The query , "How do you feel", is actually a nice thing to say after finding out someone had surgery. Lol. Methinks you just need a little vacation if social pleasantries get you down...

Are you still on acid reducers? If not, try going back on them. If you start with an empty stomach, how much can you eat in a meal (weight and type of food please)?

2 1/2 months post op and now experiencing pain
Berry78 replied to TeriR's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Probably give your team a call, see what they think. In the meantime, maybe go back to real soft foods (even full liquids) and skip the vitamin for a couple days. Never hurts to give tummy a rest. Of course, keep potential gallbladder issues in mind too. -
6 months out and now having gallbladder removed!

Day 5 post op - constant bathroom trips
Berry78 replied to PAguy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I couldn't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, so drank lots of herbal tea and broth. It can be done If you go 24 hours without artificial sweeteners and still have problems, then that's probably not it. -
Day 5 post op - constant bathroom trips
Berry78 replied to PAguy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I doubt it's anything wrong. But you should always run questions by your doc. It is possible you are consuming something that no longer agrees with you. Artificial sweetener and milk come to mind as common problem-makers. What are you consuming? -
Medically induced stress test?
Berry78 replied to Kris10n's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is now a new medicine they use for stress tests that doesn't make you feel like you are going to die. Not sure how widespread its use is yet, but keep your fingers crossed that you get the new stuff. The old stuff is/was the pits. -
Acid reflux problems after going off meds
Berry78 replied to Meryline's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is common to stay on acid reducers for 6 months. The long term concerns are for years, decades even. It's just a bit unusual to have acid problems after RNY.. usually that is a fix for acid.. but I do think it just takes more time. -
Things I'll Need After Surgery (besides food)
Berry78 replied to des_'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I stocked up on enemas and other constipation remedies, and extra bed pillows. -
You're killing it! So awesome!!

My 11 year old son knows about the surgery, but is confused why I'm still big. Everyday it's "why is your butt so fat?" Sigh. Before the surgery he very rarely mentioned my weight. I'm 2 months out. Funny story... I was at chik fil a getting meals to go home for 2 kids, and one for the daughter that went with me. The worker thought I was ordering two meals for myself. I guess that could have embarassing before surgery, but knowing now that I could only eat maybe 1/2 of a chicken patty.. it was hilarious.
