  1. I agree about things being "too". For the most part I just cook everything for myself so I control the flavor. I avoid sweets, but at a birthday I'll have a couple bites of cake or ice cream. Don't really enjoy it, so it makes it easier to not have those cravings. Since I'm not eating processed food, I actually need to make sure I get enough salt. My tastebuds are accomodating this need so salted nuts are actually good. (Lunchmeat still tastes like garbage though..too salty!) I'm really enjoying my ability to taste food more fully... so good food is really good. But bad food is BAD. How the heck do people eat that stuff??? Lol!

    Soups After Surgery

Ok, me thinks peeps tend to overthink the soup thing. For those that are healing, obviously follow your post op phases. No chunks on purees and the like. For those on a regular diet, measure your soup, count the calories, and enjoy! If you get hungry before the next meal.. either suck it up, or decide soup isn't worth it. All this talk of straining solids.. come on! Food should be nourishing and enjoyable, not turning us all into wild-eyed cokeheads... Frothing at the mouth.. "BUT THERE ARE CHUNKS IN MY SOUP!"

Weight loss AFTER removal of excess skin

This is a good one for your surgeon. The two pans that I'm familiar with were large, and they took the belly buttons off. But by doing so the result was smoother.

As for how long.. plan on at least 18 months to 2 years.

Sure, it's possible. But, at 5'8, you'll be at a normal BMI at about 165lbs.. which is only 160lbs For me, I have 3 goals. 1 is to lose about 80% of my excess weight (me at 180lbs), and if I get there, then my stretch goal is 155lb (normal BMI). A non-scale goal is size 10-12. Considering I started at 305lbs, 5'7, size 24.. I'm happy with any of it. When formulating your goals, there are more things that are important beyond what the scale says, so be sure to have some non-scale goals too.

Lacking the motivation to even walk...

Peeps.. how much weight do y'all think you'll lose? 15-20lbs is typical. 25-30lb losses are usually in big guys or patients with complications.
  7. It can go different ways. For some, the dietary control and weight loss fuels positivity. For others, the hormonal fluctuations, head hunger, and possible pain/complications "win", and the depression is worse than ever... at least for a while. I do think this postop depression tends to be limited to the 2-3 months following surgery, and it gets better as the patient heals. It is very important to have a med that you can take.. I mean small enough.. liquid, crushable, or tiny pills. Regular pills hurt for the first month or so.
  8. Well, no.. I just thought it was clever, actually. Do be careful eating a bunch at once in case the sugar alcohols don't agree with you (but, I see you already did go easy, so all will be well, I'm sure ).

    Fluids post-op

By day 3 I was getting my 64oz. My plan had us on clear liquids the first week so we didn't fill up on protein while sorting out the fluid issue. Worked perfectly for me.
  10. Eggs, water, and fiber.. huh...
  11. I wear Christopher and Banks uptown pants. They may run large. I dunno.

Lacking the motivation to even walk...

I lost 17lbs the first month, and here I am, not 5 months out, and am down 74lbs. It'll come off, but it does take time.
  13. Surgery won't fix that for you, sorry. Obsession with fast food? There are people that leave the hospital and go get a hamburger (and promptly need more surgery or simply die). It's good that you have time to work on your head, preop. If you "can't" eat a healthy diet preop , then you won't after either. I don't care if you eat a lot of healthy food before surgery, just so you are eating it. What is healthy? A start is to get rid of anything that has sugar in it or is fried. (It's amazing what these two things will cut out of your diet!)
  14. I weigh 231 now and can just wear a 16 (nonstretchy dress pant). It has to do with our starting weights and our base bone density, muscle and ligament strength, and of course, extra skin. I weighed 300 for 8 years..long enough to develop an extra heavy-duty interior. Pixie carried more weight than I did, so her interior is double extra-duty! Lol!
  15. Dairy is hard for lots of people postop. You can really test it out by avoiding all sources of dairy for 24 hours and see how you feel. Bone broth has 8g protein in 8oz so you can still get protein. (Slow cooked homemade broth will have protein too). And Isopure, like you've found.
  16. Everyone seems to respond to preop diets differently. Glad yours is going ok. The "stoned" feeling should get better in a couple more days. About the time you are getting used to it, you'll have surgery and change again!

So happy you sought treatment. Fingers crossed for good news!

    Pneumonia - uggghhhh!

Wowsers! Glad he figured it out! Without symptoms, it may have been brewing a while. You also may have picked it up more recently. Any trouble with acid reflux?
  19. Depends on your plan. Less than 20 (net.. which means subtract the fiber) is full ketosis.. using fat as energy instead of sugar. 20-50 might still be ketosis, definitely weight loss amount. 51-100 low carb likely not in ketosis borderline weight loss phase Over 100 moderate carb, may or may not permit weight loss. Personally I like 51-70g/day. Permits losses but not ketosis. Those that have PCOS probably should stay under 40g (aim for ketosis). Diabetics should work closely with their team to find the right amount for them.

    Saving my life

I got the sleeve. I had high blood pressure but no diabetes or gerd. The preop liquid diet was really hard, but the liquid postop diet was sooo much better.

    Saving my life

Yeah.. low carbing had me crying too
  22. I kept using the wrong word for the first month. (book=parking lot?!) It'll get better.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I have been following this thread with interest. I got curious as to how we could meet even minimal protein goals without animal products. Went through my cabinet: serving size 1/2 cup except where indicated Peas 4g Canned spinach 3g Nuts 7g/ounce Oats 5g Rice 4g Potatoes 2g Pasta 7g Beans 7g Conclusion: with our small stomachs it is very difficult to get in even minimal protein. We need to eat 7g of protein 7 times a day to make 49g. Not impossible, but it would take some real planning. An interesting find.. black bean spaghetti. It has a whopping 25g of protein and 12g fiber in a 2oz (dry) serving. I assume that's about 1/2 cup. If you were to eat that each day, you'd be covered.
  24. I didn't have that, but we are all different. Suggestions: Be sure to keep an eye on your temperature. If the pain gets really bad, go to the ER since they can run all sorts of CT scans and stuff. How are your bowel movements? Constipation can back things up, causing abdominal discomfort. Pay attention to what you are consuming and whether it changes things. Keep an eye on your incisions. They should be dry and healing nicely. Hope you feel better soon!
  25. The wagon is "LadyAlana's eating rules" or "Dale Cruse's eating rules" Each of us has to create a set of rules by which we make our dietary choices. Since we all have different needs (physically and emotionally), our rules must be taylored to fit us. My rules for now (4.5months postop) 1. Eat a variety of foods each day that fit within a designated framework. (Protein goals, calorie goals, etc). 2. Keep it simple and easy 3. Sugar is limited to special occasions (birthdays, etc) 4. Eat food that tastes good and makes me happy, while adhering to #1- #3. My rules are broad, non-specific... and this keeps those constant while my actual mealplan can change. Right now I don't eat grains or starchy vegetables (except beans), but those specific rules will change as I meet my weight goal. Maybe they'll switch to eating grains, but they have to be sprouted..or whatever. Eating without rules got me to 300lbs. I never want to do that again!
