Required weight loss.. concerned
Berry78 replied to laurileet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, if you don't count calories, then your natural appetite is gonna rule the roost, and you won't lose much. Plus, when you count, you become aquainted with what is IN food. This is your decision, you can count if you want to. Here is what my hubby eats (without surgery) and has lost a bunch of weight. Breakfast: 1 cup 1% cottage cheese and a piece of fruit. Lunch: 2 eggs and a cup of pinto beans with salsa. Snack: 1oz nuts or seeds and sliced veggies (or 1oz peanut butter on 3-4 ribs of celery) Dinner: 4oz of meat or fish, 1/2 sweet or white potato and green vegetable. No more than a teaspoon of fat added to your potato and veg. Before bed snack: glass of reduced fat milk, graham cracker with 1 tablespoon peanut butter. (That's one of the big crackers that can be split into 4 pieces). My hubby doesn't get the bedtime snack, but diabetics should have it. It's about 1400 calories, and is nice and balanced. -

Let's Play A Round Of: How I Get My Protein Post WLS!
Berry78 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Yep.. actually started this at about 8 or 10 weeks out. I couldn't fit veggies in very often until 6 months (significant relaxation of sleeve at 6 month mark). Same thing, day in and out, but makes it easy. I'll add a bit of butter or olive oil and salsa. My calories are probably closer to 1200 or even 1250 some days. Macros are approx 40% of calories from fat, 28% protein, and 32% carbs. (And that is assuming no added fat! Man that stuff has to be ruled with an iron fist!) -

Required weight loss.. concerned
Berry78 replied to laurileet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How many calories are you eating? What does a day look like? My FIL is on a lot of insulin, and as soon as we consistently limit his diet (small, regular meals), his insulin needs and weight go down. So it's possible! Exercise is nice, but not necessary at this stage in the game. Do what you can, but don't worry about killing yourself. -
Sleeve will work well for you (you don't have GERD, do you?)

Put the scale away for a week, then you'll see a change..

I'm not the one who wants to keep it a secret.
Berry78 replied to oopsydaisy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't run into any negative opinions either, so far. I think it should be up to the patient to decide with whom this info is shared. When a hubby has prostate trouble and can't pee, it's his job to decide who to tell... (wife shouldn't chat with her sister about it without his say so)... same thing applies here. My MIL is a blabber-mouth, so even though I pretty much had to tell her (we live in the same house), I don't think every one of HER friends and family really needed to know... It's not that I care they know, it's that she didn't ask me whether it was ok to tell. So, on that bent, if the OP wants to tell, she should tell. Her hubby shouldn't make that decision. If he thinks its a bad idea, he can lay out his reasoning, then let her decide. -
Not coping with lack of support
Berry78 replied to monkeyol's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
[Hugs] Welcome to the board! You will find there are a ton of people here with unsupportive families. Mostly I think it's fear for your safety that causes family members to act that way. When YOU get to the point of saying, hey, my quality of life is gone, and I'm willing to take a risk at the chance of being better... Then you're home free. Friends and family look for chinks in your armor of resolve.. and if they find one? They'll pry at it mercilessly! Make sure they won't find one. This is YOUR journey, not theirs.. so they don't get a say. One thing that was helpful to me preop was to write down all my thoughts and feelings and reasons about and for the surgery. That way I could refresh my memory if the going got tough. You are gonna do great! -
That's almost a pound every other day! Typical weight loss is 4-8 pounds a month, so 13 is amazing! Remember, the surgery isn't expected to knock off every pound of excess weight. You'll probably lose about 100lbs the first year postop, relatively easily. After that, it's all up to you.

It's a quote from a book called "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". There! Someone finally answered her question!

You've already gotten excellent advice. To stop losing weight you need more calories. Nuts pack the greatest calorie/density/nutrient punch. Drinking a nice smoothie with peanut butter and bananas sounds heavenly..

You probably got the Roux-en-Y Bypass. But other than putting a name to it, the actual procedure doesn't matter for your after care. I want you to find a new primary care doctor, preferably young, and go into your appointment telling them you had the Bypass. Even if this is in error, it won't affect your care at all. Request they run ALL the normal Bariatric panel. Possible deficiencies: Calcium Iron Vit. B-12, Folate, Niacin, B-6 Vit. D, A, K, E Vit. C Also known: zinc, selenium, copper You can just throw vitamins at yourself and hope for the best, but you may never really figure out what is wrong by doing it that way. For example, if you are short on copper, but you also take zinc, the zinc will "cancel out" the copper. Good luck!

Ok, figured out you're only 6ish weeks postop. The sugar in the fruit might cause dumping this early in the game. Sugar free freezer pops might be good....
-
It's true.. fruit can be a bit high in carbs for some plans. 1/2 a medium apple has about 10g net carbs. If you're keto, it's too many. But, you asked about low fat, and now low carb too? What exactly does your nut expect you to eat?

Does it have to be vegan? There are egg white based proteins as well.

Choosing what to do first?
Berry78 replied to monalyssa33's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I've been thinking about this too. Personally I would cut off anything that is creating sores or mobility issues first. Then anything that is causing problems with my wardrobe. (For example, if I had to constantly look for certain types of clothes to accomodate _______). After that, it's just whatever I tend to be mentally bothered by. Other considerations are price and recovery timing. -
Four Days Post-Op
Berry78 replied to LillieDuFran's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah, this was me too. Even 5 weeks out I was jumping out of my skin. Things have settled now.. probably too much... -
I bet the Sahara is low fat, since it's not in the over-fed U.S. (Sorry, couldn't resist). One of the best ideas I've heard is putting protein shakes into an ice cream maker. Eggface has some excellent recipes for those. I love slicing up an apple, putting a bit of cinnamon on it, and nuking it (microwave) for a couple minutes.
-
Hmm.. yeah, you're right! Guess we tend to put people in our own shoes when trying to imagine their situation... To the OP, sorry if I made assumptions...
-
Bingo! This whole process tests us on so many levels....

My earlobes became floppier. My face feels bonier under my hand. I had a "dent" on my forehead that has pretty much vanished. My nose has also grown! My skin is no longer dry and cracked.

B12 injections or pill?
Berry78 replied to Shades171's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for this post! I found out some stuff. Basically, pill or sublingual should work (shots are good too..and necessary if you are already deficient). The pill or sublingual needs to be 500 micrograms of hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin, taken in one or more doses through the day. (1x500 or 2x250, etc) We only absorb 1/100 of the dose through passive absorption in the small intestine (5mcg out of a 500mcg dose), and our daily requirement is 3.5mcg. Since we can store excess, if you forget your b-12 for a month, you'll be fine as long as you weren't deficient to start. I looked at my vitamins.. 25mcg a day. 25/100=0.25mcg/day of the less readily absorbed cyanocobalamin. So, what should I do? Yup! Got to go vitamin shopping! Thank goodness I had reserves! -
How long did it take you to lose 80lbs?
Berry78 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The reset is a way of getting yourself mentally on track rather than really changing anything physically. But, since you restrict calories, the weightloss does tend to start back up. As for how long it takes to lose 90lbs.. that is completely dependent on how much you needed to lose to start plus your own metabolism. Average weight loss is about 1.5-3 pounds a week after the first month.
