  1. https://www.rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/How-much-is-too-much/Whats-the-harm/What-Are-The-Risks.aspx Ok this is the site where that graphic came from. The website describes the problems of heavy drinking from a mental and physical health point of view. (Dependence, liver disease, etc.) The BBC describes limits as well.... and theirs are based on consumption levels that keep risk of alcohol-related death to 1%. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-35255384
  2. Fluff.. Congrats on getting your surgery type! You'll be a momma 'roo, what with your pouch and all...
  3. Make sure to visit the west coast of Florida. The gulf is so much nicer than the Atlantic. (IMHO). Hopefully the hurricane damage will be sorted.

    1 week out

Please call your surgeon NOW and tell them what you did. They will tell you if it's ok or not.

Pain in left shoulder when i burp.

It is probably gas pain from the surgery (once it moves up to the shoulder it's almost gone), or it can be pain-transfer from the diaphragm. If you had a hiatal hernia repair, that frequently results in this happening. Usually shoulder pain is no problem and goes away within a couple weeks. There is the rare chance that that pain can signify a problem, so if you develop a fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit, the pain gets increasingly worse, or it lasts longer than 3 weeks, you'll want to run it by your doc. (Anytime you have a concern or feel something is "not right", feel free to contact your team. That's what they're there for!). If anyone develops a fever of 102 or higher during the first 2 months postop, he/she should go straight to the ER.
  8. Ok, I found a good graphic to base a drinking recommendation on. This chart is for non-bariatric folk, and since we can't handle as much alcohol, we should cut the amounts down. Men: 2/day and 7/week Women: 1/day and 4/ week
  9. Day 4 on solids? I couldn't have begun to swallow that. On day 8 I had whole milk (before that it was water, tea, broth).. and that milk was SO THICK. Took a couple days to get used to it. Perhaps its the difference between pouch and sleeve...

Gastric Leak for 6 Months - Help!

Ohhhh.. been wondering how things have been foing for you! So happy everything is good! 84 is amazing!
  11. I've heard people say it feels like it wears off quicker... but, assuming the study is applicable across the board (can't be certain that is even the case)... Since it creates a bigger punch, it's possible that as it wears off, you just don't feel the smaller amount of alcohol as much.. you're kinda numbed to it. Anyway, just a theory..

    Need typical day menu

A lot of plans want patients approximating 3 meals a day eating. A typical meal lasts 20 minutes, and if you eat longer than that, you'll "overeat". I can overeat on ice cream in 30 seconds. I can't possibly overeat grilled salmon.
  13. Thank you @Amburmist for bringing this up. I did a bit of digging, and essentially it boils down to this. During the first year postop, the entire body is working hard to lose weight. The liver has often been stressed prior to surgery because of fatty liver. It continues being stressed during the weight loss period (and maybe longer if it had significant damage). Alcohol doesn't appear to be more dangerous to the liver postop than it would be in another person whose liver is in the same condition. What does happen is the alcohol is metabolized differently... we get drunk sooner and stay that way longer. We may be at risk of drinking excessively due to addiction transfer... and excessive alcohol is a problem for anyone. Our blood alcohol level goes up more on a given quantity of alcohol than that of a non-patient. More alcohol in the blood means more work for the liver. So, my recommendation is that we shouldn't drink for 6 months postop AT ALL. From 6 months until maintenance, limit alcohol to maybe once a month, and only 1 serving. During maintenance, 1 serving 2-3 times a week at most. And of course, this is assuming the doc has said its ok for the individual. Tylenol affects the liver and should be carefully controlled as well. Smoking is strongly associated with ulcers. Smoking and drinking and NSAIDS, combined, are worse for ulcers. I didn't see where alcohol by itself causes ulcers. Just as our meals need to shrink, the size of our alcohol servings should too. In the study, participants drank 5oz of wine. The non-bariatric patients had a blood alcohol level of .02. The patients' was .05-.08! Do NOT drink a 5oz glass of wine or a 12oz can of beer and think you can drive less than 2 hours later. And when I was recommending servings... you might want to consider a serving to be 1/2 of a normal one. 6oz beer or 2.5oz table wine... especially if you want to indulge more than once a week.
  14. I hadn't heard of phase angles before, so I looked it up. Full article: http://m.ajcn.nutrition.org/content/82/1/49.full Table of average phase angle #s. http://m.ajcn.nutrition.org/content/82/1/49/T2.expansion.html Assuming your test results are comparable to those in the study, your current results are... sobering. Please follow your nut's plan to the letter.
  15. Woo hoo, surgi bud!!! Stellar!!!!! I love how you've increased your muscle mass! I always thought BMR and RMR were the same thing. Did they explain the difference? Oh, and some docs use 25bmi as "ideal", others use a life insurance table. Yours must use the life insurance table.
  16. Ok, it may not be that you are feeling LIKE you are having a heart attack... you very well may BE on the verge of having one. Please don't do any exercise until you get evaluated. Make an appointment TODAY with your doctor. Exercise has very little to do with losing weight (for the obese, especially at the beginning of a program). It's all about the calories. I'm not suggesting you see your doc. I'm telling you to go.

    Perspective

Are we talking the beginning of the 5th month, or end? Beginning: 19% total body weight End: 26% Edited to add.. Sorry, I didn't realize this was the lap band forum. I have a sleeve.
  19. Were you able to lose weight preop? What happens preop can sometimes predict how losses will go postop. You also may still be swollen and/or retaining fluid from surgery or your monthly cycle (if you still have that).
  20. If I had toe fungus, my MIL would tell the grocery store checkout person about it. So there was no option of keeping my surgery a secret, even if I wanted to. (I live with MIL, so not telling her wasn't an option either). I'm sorry you are married to my MIL

    Is Actigall Necessary?

Boy, that was quick. Ok, so sleeves and bypasses have similar statistics. Up to 70% of patients develop gallstones. But, the majority don't develop symptoms. About 10% of patients end up getting their gallbladders removed. Actigall does help prevent the gallstone formation and it's recommended to take it for 3-6 months (BMI less than 40 = 3 months, more than 50 = 6 months). It's worth talking to your doctor about. Those with liver disease may not want to take actigall because it can cause irritation to the liver.

    Is Actigall Necessary?

I have the prescription but have been really bad about taking it. I was actually thinking about this today. Some studies have shown gallbladder issues in 30-50 percent of bariatric patients (according to a pharmacy student that looked it up for me). So, yeah, with those odds I think I'll be better about taking mine. I'll see if I can turn up anything else.
  23. I'm sure Fluffy didn't mean to come across that way. She's actually very sweet and funny most of the time. As for the flushing.. if it happens after taking your vitamins it could be the niacin. But that should only happen for a couple hours.
  24. That's why it took 6 hours. Eat, wait 2 hours, eat... I'm almost never hungry... I eat because my body needs the fuel.
  25. The first two are water, then coconut water, milk, and coffee. Each of the jars holds 2 cups, so 4 of them is 64oz. I'm very particular with the food, but the drinks are more flexible. I get at least that much, if I'm thirsty I drink more. Sometimes tea or extra decaf coffee.
