My personal VSG journey take 2

Dude.. harsh! Lol. Guess guys get crazy hormones too! As for the standing up dizziness.. it's called orthostatic hypotension. Very hard to catch on a blood pressure machine. Make sure you are drinking enough, and getting enough salt. Compression legwear can help, but it needs to be professionally fitted, medical grade.
  2. I had to cancel my donation because it was too close to my surgery date. Does anyone know if/when I can donate again in the future? Didn't know if bariatric patients have contraindications for donating...
  3. What? I'm getting surgery today, and you guys think I have to cancel my white-water rafting trip next week? Y'all nuts! (Just kidding!... today IS the day though!)
  4. There is a website: twofoods.com You can search and compare foods' nutrient contents. Tuna has roughly 1.5 times the protein, by weight, as turkey lunch meat. This means to get the same nutrition, you have to eat more turkey. Since the volume is a problem, that is why we talk about choosing nutrient dense foods. Turkey lunch meat has about 17g of protein in a 3.5 ounce serving. If that was your source of protein for the day, you would need 3.5 meals of just turkey to meet your minimum protein requirement. Tuna has 25g in 3.5 ounces, which means you would meet the requirement in 2.5 meals... leaving some room in your day for something else! But, from these examples, you can see why cereal has to be reserved for a last meal when your protein requirement has already been met for the day. (If you choose to eat it at all).
  5. Monday.. me too! I'm just now starting to think about last minute errands/shopping, etc. Need to make a list so I don't forget anything. Good luck!

Need To Lose 50Lbs Too Have Surgery

First off, congrats on deciding to make a change in your life! I would recommend a low carbohydrate diet. Most of us have problems with carbs, and by drastically reducing them, it helps with cravings. You can start off with 50-75 grams per day. If you see the weight loss stalling, you can cut more (Net carbs). Look for low carb books and recipes to get ideas. Eat real food (lots of nonstarchy veggies) Don't drink your calories Eat 3 meals and a snack or two. Spread the carbs out over the day. Good luck!

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet

I've bounced back and forth between watery stool and constipation. I wouldn't recommend taking anything because about the time you do, your body will have adjusted (maybe). Then you'll have other problems. There might be something you are consuming that isn't agreeable. I was allowed Okios triple zero yogurt. Something in that caused me trouble.

    Can't lose weight!

Dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets are the best! Much tastier than the old, boring, rectangular ones. [emoji6] For real food recipe ideas.. check out the blog by Eggface. It is called "The World According to Eggface". Good stuff...

    How is this even possible?

This question is in line with, "I go to bed weighing 167lbs. I wake up weighing 164lbs. I didn't pee 3 pints! Where did the weight go?" The body does some wacky things. My guess is that you need to take a break day every so often, or play around with getting more calories. Once you get into a routine, the body has your number. Keep it guessing! Good luck!

    Portion Size

You will follow your surgeon's guidelines the first couple months. After that, you will be experimenting with foods, but essentially will work up to 3 oz of protein and 1/2 cup combined of veg, fruits, and starches. After maybe a year or two you might have a slice of regular pizza.

    Can't lose weight!

Don't count tuna or chicken salad as protein just because there is added fat? That's nuts. Count it as protein and fat. Best if you make it yourself so you can measure the ingredients.

    Can't lose weight!

I would recommend switching over from all the shakes and bars to real food. Eggs and meat, veggies, and a little fruit. Make sure you are eating at least 1000-1200cals.
  13. Hold onto the shakes because tastes change after surgery, and you might tolerate it then. I'm using Quest powdered peanut butter flavored, mixed with water, it's pretty good.

Prepping for 10K and knee pain

This is one of those big picture examination times. Running is not causing weight loss. It is helping your cardio vascular fitness, but walking the same distance will do as much or more for weight loss. Injury at this stage can lay you up for weeks or months, and you won't reach your goal. Consider this your body's way of warning you against running for now. Swimming is good cardio, as are elliptical machines. Look for low impact activities while waiting for the weight to come off. Walk, walk, walk. After you have dropped another 50-60lbs, start jogging a bit and see how it goes. Congrats on the weight loss! You are doing great!
  15. The preop has me super thirsty. I guess I should count how much I drink, but it is at least 2 quarts on top of shakes. I have felt sick a few times, and it was always because I needed more water.

    Physiological Changes After WLS

I read that article a couple months ago, but got more out of it this time. Thank you! Leaves me wondering what my projected weight would be according to the database! Lol.

    Help!

Are you still in the hospital or home? Keep trying to drink.. a sip every 5 minutes. If you can't get down 40oz today, be sure to let your doctor know. [Hugs] You sound miserable
  18. The mild sauce may be too much the first few weeks. You don't want to take a chance upsetting the sleeve. Think bland and soothing! Sugar is a gateway drug (for me anyway). Might want to stick with stevia.

    Question.

Perhaps put the situation in a letter to the surgeon. Lay out what your weight was before starting your low carb diet, your carb, protein, fat, and caloric consumption. Then describe the nut's plan. Explain you are willing to try the new plan, but are concerned about potential weight gain on that plan, and the willingness of the surgeon to perform the surgery if you have gained weight.
  20. Homemade broth has a decent amount of protein.
  21. Fainting after using Colace is considered a severe reaction, and one should seek medical treatment if experiencing this effect. Please be sure to tell your doctor.
  22. I have seen two other people on here that have needed total gastrectomies. The one either hadn't had it yet, or just got it. The other was a while ago, and he did really well. A stomach cancer board will have more people with the experience too. [Hugs] what a long road but hopefully things will be much better for you!

    Dark stool

I sometimes do during the preop portion. I figure it is bile or vitamins or something. Feel free to ask your doc!

    I'm so new

Well, it sounds like your father is on board. Your boyfriend has no clue what it is to live with a broken metabolism. (Even if he has one himself!). If you want to try one last type of diet while researching the surgery and starting the process, you can try a ketogenic diet. (Lots of proteins and fats, and less than 20g net carbs). It usually takes at least 6 months to go from the thinking about phase to surgery, so you can try the diet while doing the process. If the diet works, you can always cancel the surgery. But if it doesn't, then you'll be glad you did both at the same time. Google "Diet Doctor" and ketogenic Good luck!

    Pre-Op diet...how much did u

I only had to do a 2 week liquid diet. I decided to start about 2 weeks early, to get the hang of it. I lost a pound a day for the first 10 days. After that, the weight loss has slowed dramatically, the hunger, thirst, and cravings are real! I am down to losing a pound every 3-4 days. I tell you this because this severely restricted diet is absolutely not feasible long term. Even if it were continued, the weight loss would cease. I am soo ready to just get on with it! Surgery in 5 more days!
