Kaiser Options Orientation 7/28 (What to expect?)
monica91355 replied to JessP's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Which Kaiser? They are all a little bit different. -
Hello! I'm out in Santa Clarita. Had my vsg on 6/22 at West LA Kaiser with Dr Um.
-
Yes. The antibiotics and relaxing cocktail of something that made me loopy The blood thinner was a shot.
-
It really depends on the hospital. Got me changed into hospital attire. Then did urine test, check weight, etc. Got me settled in the pre-op area. Hooked me up to all the monitors and started IV. Meet with nursing staff. Start antibiotics and give blood thinners. Meet anesthesiologists - all 3 of them. Meet with surgeon. Start relaxing cocktail of drugs and oxygen mask. Then off to surgery. All of that really did take at least 1.5 hours.

Good point! My surgery was originally scheduled for 8/1 but I asked to be on cancellations list. Then they had me tentative for 6/26. Then the 6/26 date turned into 6/22!

Each Kaiser has a different process. Here's a rough timeline of the process I had to go through - early Jan. referral from PCP - mid-Jan orientation to Options program - early Feb meet with program director - first week of February start 12 week Options program - mid-March (6 weeks into Options) meet with program director and complete all required tests - last week of April finish Options - mid-May final appointment with program director - May 30 meet surgeon - June 20 pre-op appointments - June 22 surgery Hope that helps! Although, the requirements at your Kaiser may be totally different than the Kaiser I go to in SoCal.

Hospital stay guests
monica91355 replied to bigperm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The hospital I was at was a good hour from our house. The hospital allowed 1 person to stay the night with you in your room. The nurses kept offering to bring my boyfriend a bed. He ended up leaving around 10pm or 11pm. I was in pretty bad shape after surgery and really out of it. I had someone in my room ever 1-2 hours throughout the night. I told him not to stay overnight because he would never get sleep with the various checks all night. -
Not having mood issues yet. I start full liquids tomorrow. With being on clear liquids only, I'm surprised I'm not fatigued. 100 degrees . . . Yuck. We've had a heat wave here and it's been running around 105.

Wow! What a journey it's been! Six months ago I inquired about WLS surgery and today I finally got my surgery date for June 22 at Kaiser West LA. So nervous and excited. Only 2 weeks to go! Anyone else having surgery June 22?? -
I'm day 3 post op and still in tons of pain. Also getting horrible headaches that will not go away :-(

Today is the day! Surgery is at 12 PST. I'm so nervous and having second thoughts, but I got this and know I'm making the right decision!!

That is all I could think about yesterday. I had a rough day in the hospital. Bad reaction to the anesthesia, trouble controlling BP, low oxygen levels, blood sugar spiked. Hoping the worst is behind me -
Good luck! My surgery is tmw too

Always ask to be put on the cancellation list. They had me scheduled for surgery for August 1 then I called back the next day and they were able to schedule my surgery for June 22nd, which is about 3 weeks after I saw the surgeon. -
I'm a day after you on the 22nd!

Post Op - going back to work

Yes - talk to your HR department and they will tell you what to submit. The disability policy at my work is self funded and self administered so I just need to submit the FMLA paperwork.
