Stomach Noises
PatientEleventyBillion replied to imsleevingmyself's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ugh splenda.. the same garbage that was in the Glucerna they tried to force me on pre-op. I absolutely despise the taste of artificial sweeteners, though Stevia hasn't seemed so bad as of yet when I tasted it pre-op. Regarding the acidic feeling, it just could be the type of drink. My wife had the same feeling when she'd have any sort of citrus tasting drink (Lemonade, Sprite, Orange Juice, Smirnoff Ice cocktail, etc.). Also, for the OP: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2016/04/29/noisy-stomach-normal-or-unhealthy.html -
Soup Recommendations
PatientEleventyBillion replied to The Shrinking Strega's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In pre-op before I found a better diet, I'd take canned chicken noodle soup, put it through a strainer to get rid of the chicken chunks and noodles, and have the soup like this. The fat and sodium in it makes it more bearable, whereas I personally find broths in the store to smell like dirty socks (or a high school gym) and taste like crap. -
Beginning the process
PatientEleventyBillion replied to TrishaR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most people that have sleep apnea don't know it because it's generally not that severe. As someone who had 55-60 apneas an hour (5 and under is normal), which is overkill, I can tell you the biggest symptom of this is jolting awake and not knowing why, or having a panic attack like you can't breathe (which is why I was put on an anti-anxiety medication). I've found one of the best ways to alleviate this is trying to change body position while sleeping, or use elevation. Before my weight gain I used to be a back sleeper. When I started having apneas, I found sleeping on my right side helped significantly, while due to sinus problems sleeping on my left side caused congestion. The sleep study is rather easy, they should give you a small bag of stuff to put on when you sleep, follow their instructions, and try to sleep as normal as if you don't even have it on. If you're found to have apnea, they may either take a wait-and-see approach, or they may want to do some kind of intervention which might include a CPAP machine. In either case, if you have OSA, regardless of the insurance situation, you still want this taken care of. -
Unrealistic expectations?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to New Me 31317's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's why you chart/journal too. If you're ever in doubt, go back to this and see for yourself you're doing just fine. -
Thanks for that, will look into getting some of these, though wouldn't consider sleeping in it like this guy in the link said, I'd likely sweat my ass off and not be able to sleep.

Exercise
PatientEleventyBillion replied to abettyc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was back shopping and walking around after discharge. I mean, rain isn't really an excuse if you have rain gear. Or go to a mall, walk around there. When doing shopping, make more rounds throughout the store. It's been raining and snowing like hell here in Calgary in late April/early May and it hasn't stopped me from doing anything besides not stressing the area of my surgery by lifting/straining. I'd go with my wife to the downtown CORE mall, let my daughter play at the massive kids play area (while wife relaxes and watches her play), and I'd walk around the mall while she played, or would drive my wife nuts by pacing around her in circles (deliberately just to annoy her, because thats what husbands do ). -

Likely loaded with sugar too. -
What are the benefits of compression stuff anyways? I've never considered this but I keep reading about it.

What size is your sleeve?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to caddygirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Heh. I kinda put my own mental state at ease when I had the post-op barium swallow and leak test before being put on clear liquids. I saw their screen of the liquids going through me, and while I didn't see the stomach as one would see it from a scope or laparascopic cam, I could clearly see the shape the fluid was taking as it went through my stomach and into my duo/intestines and that my stomach was much smaller. So.. confirmation enough. -
Did anyone here not need this (yet)?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to jessgnc's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I've got almost 200 pounds to lose, and even then, I would not get the DS unless i absolutely had to. I was also not even informed that this was an option for me in Alberta, so they might not do it yet, or it might be reserved for the worst-of-the-worst. I think in general they try to avoid anything that's: - Going to permanently alter ones way of life (large-adjustment difficulties could be physiologically and psychologically damaging) - Add more risk to a surgery (unless w/risk assessment they find the risk to be worth it.. like in cancer treatment for example where less cautious approach is necessary) I'm not a doctor, but from what you say it doesn't seem like you have a justification for a DS yet. I would maybe get second and third opinions and see if perhaps you can get VSG instead. Months ago had 180 pounds to drop, with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and liver stage 3 fibrosis (along with a bp of 170/115 and RHR of 100-110). I still would not want a DS. Someone without those issues, I can't wrap my mind around why they'd need a DS other than to put more money in a surgeons pocket. -
Support for my Wife
PatientEleventyBillion replied to JBGordon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cheer her on. Research more about the pre-operative diet and liver shrinking. Going at it from an educated standpoint for many can also help with convincing someone else. -
Excessive salvia 2 days post-op is driving me crazy...anyone else?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to MyLife_MyStory's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Are you having a nasal drip? Nasal congestion? Generally that's the source of this. I've got recurring issues with my sinuses and being a phlegm machine so when I had my EGD done, and when I was post-op, it was no surprise I had phlegm in my throat, esophagus, and stomach as well. Because of your severe restrictions I'm under the impression that it's almost expected for you to have these issues, so talk to your family doctor and try to get to the underlying issues to treat that if it's affecting things like your sleep. -

Peristalsis I'm honestly surprised you never felt/heard this before. -
I've changed about food, my family hasn't.
PatientEleventyBillion replied to BostonGary's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fertility issues are certainly a concern of our doctors, especially since this PCOS diagnosis and that she rarely has her periods anymore unless on birth control. It's very odd to me since I know so little about this. I actually wonder if it has to do with her PUPPP condition she had that started in her third trimester of her last pregnancy with our daughter, caused hives and such, was supposed to go away with giving birth, but never did.. and 6 years later she still takes Reactine (antihistamine) to prevent hives from occurring on her midsection and arms. In some ways I'm actually worried about other pregnancies and how her body will react to it, assuming she even can get pregnant. -
April Sleevers, What Changes Have You Noticed?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to tlh4life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my soft solids stage a day early, and I can say, I sure as hell feel my sleeve's restrictions after 1/3 cup of refried beans + grated (and melted) block cheddar. Psychologically, the feeling of contentment, knowing my body is satiated (with far less food, and that I've gotten over the garbage foods), and that I'm substantially healthier than even a few months ago, personally, it does wonders for my self esteem and my confidence in better health. -
I've changed about food, my family hasn't.
PatientEleventyBillion replied to BostonGary's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife is adjusting her diet significantly because of my pre-op diet and, due to everything I learned over the course of that 3 month diet, my post-op diet plans, and seeing how successful it's been at dropping my weight and drastically improving other health issues associated. I've expressed my concern numerous times to her because she has PCOS, and I've told her I don't want her to experience what I went through with my weight gain. She wants us to have more children but I don't want to until she gets her weight down (she's around 205, like 80 pounds over her weight), to reduce the chances of situations like gestational diabetes, never mind the risks she runs of diabetes in general with her current weight (adding weight only making that situation potentially worse). Changing the diet helps doubly not only with her own health but with the health of any children we have (especially as a fetus). -
What size is your sleeve?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to caddygirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have no idea. Psychologically it played tricks on me not seeing a picture of my stomach (I only got to see pictures of my liver which I knew was far more important), I almost was in denial I even had the surgery. -
Researching...

What was your hBA1c like, if you can divulge? And I assume this is T2? -
Did you have WLS? The audacity of some.

"I'm sick.." ".. sick of you asking me about my WLS". -
Do you find that vomiting has become part of your post VSG life?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to FamilyGuyNJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt slightly nauseated for the first few days post-op but never threw up. I've stuck religiously to the diet, instead of trying to eat until full. So I've felt rather good overall.. slightly tired. But not like I need to vomit. -
Aging process and Sleeve
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Blater's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Indeed. The resolving of numerous comorbidities, or at least improvement, is undoubtedly a reason for increased lifespan over the continuing of a self-destructive path. -
Phew, I was thinking I killed the thread.

Still only see small change. Feeling bummed and down.

I'd feel bummed too if I hadn't lost that much weight in 991 years. -
Dinner out at 14 days post op
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Mama V's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dunno how you stand that. I've had my wife write down on our dry-erase board in the kitchen every time she's gone out to grab fast food (since I haven't been able to have any of it) and tortured me with the smell of burger so when I can have meat again I get to treat myself to burgers or chicken without any moaning from her. Thank god, as well, that my cousin-in-law's and wife's best friend's weddings were both postponed to next summer. -
Coming back after almost a year!

Do you chart? How many calories? Carbs? Protein? Any list of foods you eat?
