Surgery tomorrow
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Joann454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Buy Gas-X strips today, keep receipt. Don't open unless you must have it. Return it if you don't need/use it after discharge. You'll know before discharge if you need it. -
Dates that don't revolve around food
PatientEleventyBillion replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Singles Forum
If you're going at this with a defensive outlook like being more social and functioning in society is "changing you", then you're fighting a losing battle. Relationships are two people, so flexibility is a must and doesn't require changing who you are. If you don't want to compromise, you'll be single forever, and should enjoy the fruits of your decision making. Don't expect different results with the same approach. And expect little sympathy if all you do is whine and do nothing about it. Very few people, women of all, are going to sympathize with someone they need to baby, especially on a forum where people are highly motivated to change their habits and environment. -
What was your breaking point?

Being diagnosed with Liver stage 3 fibrosis (non-alcoholic). While my hepatologist says that doesn't wake enough people up that things are getting serious with advancing liver disease, it sure woke me up. My initial diagnosis based on Fibroscan was cirrhosis, where a very cold feeling came over me when I heard it, but with a very distended midsection it was quite a bit inaccurate so they did a biopsy (with the biggest effing needle I ever saw, like the size of my forearm) only to reveal that I was stage 3 fibrosis with no cirrhosis. Last reasonable stage of irreversibility of liver damage with immediate changes. While my liver looked fantastic (had compliments about it from nurses, the surgeon, and anesthesiologists) when they took a photo of it on surgery day (thanks to 3 months pre-op and a ton of weight lost, plus obvious dramatic liver shrinking) I'm waiting for an official diagnosis that my liver is in fact better. Won't assume anything until I see my hepatologist soon. I see my case manager+dietitian and my surgeon for a follow up as well next week so might get some feedback about it then too. -
Thought I had my procedure chosen and now reconsidering.

It's extremely important to know if your reflux is diet induced or otherwise. If it's diet induced the sleeve still works the vast majority of the time without keeping or causing more reflux. The indications are that for diet induced reflux, with necessary dietary changes it will vastly improve. On the other hand if it's not caused by diet then I would pick bypass. Sleeve has less risk associated with the surgery itself and less issues with malnutrition post operatively. Incidence of dumping is far less with the sleeve, and won't cause potential future surgery risks if you need work in the abdominal cavity area later on for whatever reason. So pick sleeve unless you are sure your reflux isn't caused by diet. Can always revise the sleeve. -
New BariatricPal Tracking App! What Features Do You Want?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have a list of foods in the US and Canada that include nutritional info. Much like MFP. I believe theirs are user input though. Ability to sync with fitness accessories like Apple Watches, Fitbit, etc. to monitor exercise, HR, etc. to calculate cals burned and monitor changes. Reminders toward daily goals like protein, or alerts about exceeding like carbs, cals, etc. Supplement and medication reminders. Especially useful since Calcium supplements need to be spread out daily meaning other vitamins essential to maximize absorption need to go with them. Certain foods and other vitamins interfere with absorption of nutrients or medications. -

Is there no one over 70 who has been sleeved?!
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Hevnbound's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I liked your post because of your age.. I dunno if I'd go through with this at 75. But who knows. As far as your surgery goes when were you sleeved and what is "everything"? -
Dates that don't revolve around food
PatientEleventyBillion replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Singles Forum
There was a period of a year or two right after high school where I went into hermit-mode and the only social interaction I got (not counting MMO games) was from work. This in turn gave me social anxiety where I felt really uncomfortable talking to people and even wound up having a good amount of agoraphobia, especially when I was at the grocery store (as one example, but happened at many busy stores with open spaces) at the checkout, I'd suddenly get this rush of panic and need to get the eff out of there. This anxiety also works against you when in the situation of possibly finding a partner. People who are worthwhile will generally be attracted to like-minded folks who have: goals in life they're working toward, a strong self-esteem and self-confidence, someone who can function in society. Especially for family-oriented people, they want someone they can be proud of bringing before their family, someone they can share interests with and don't need to worry about babysitting them to be comfortable in every situation. The vast majority of women look for traits in a guy that cater to how society has always been and will always be -- partiarchal. Women have a desire to have their input and feelings recognized, but in the end, they want a strong-minded male who will take the lead. Many won't admit this, especially those who get triggered easily, but it's life. As far as your issue and your concerns go. there is only one solution, one avenue to pursue in this this, which is place yourself in more social situations, uncomfortable as it may be. Catering to this anxiety and/or phobia, or just complaining about it and expecting different results, won't improve things in the slightest.. it can only make it worse. So much like depression, one has to treat it like life and death, it's not something that will resolve itself. -
Site showed up in Facebook feed??
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Kaycee7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Theres so many ways you can be tracked without ever doing anything other than visiting sites.. -Cookies: Stored files on your computer. While there are browser restrictions for first and third party cookies, ad networks bypass this and share that info. They have access to cookies they modify and that's one way of tracking what sites you go to. That info is relayed to a third party that shares the data so they can tailor things to you. Examples of this are doubleclick, adnxs, etc. -Cloud tracking: A number of websites use this generally by placing an invisible image or script on a third party website so it can track where you've been. Other methods are used as well (famously social media buttons). Examples of these are Google Analytics, Addthis, Sharethis, Ensighten, Newrelic, Chartbeat, Monetate, Bluekai, Omniture, Doubleclick (yes they do this too), Scorecard Research, etc. -Supercookies: Information stored on browser platforms you download such as Microsoft Silverlight. This is a method used to track where you've been by accessing a third party program you've allowed on the browser. A few of the remedies I used for this are the utilization of ScriptSafe (previously NoScript/Notscripts, don't think it's being developed anymore) and uBlock Origin (previously used AdBlock Plus until they were offering money to companies to bypass these restrictions). Scriptsafe in particular will show you each domain that tries to connect to you when you visit a webpage. You'll notice after a while that there are many familiar sites that track you throughout the internet without ever needing to store and access data files like cookies. The upsides is it provides peace of mind from tracking. The downside is if you take a cautious approach like I do, it means you spend a bit of time, especially when first installing ScriptSafe in particular, whitelisting websites, and figuring out if the domain trying to connect to you is used for relevant reasons of why you're visiting the site, or if it's merely trying to track you. Some webpages are set up to not function correctly without approving these third party tracking domains. My wife doesn't like the bother of it so she doesn't use the Chrome addons I do. This site in particular uses at least 3 of these trackers, and as far as Facebook is concerned their trackers are vast, so if anyone clicks like on something they automatically find their friends and tailor that to them as well. I really wouldn't be surprised at this. As far as the site is concerned they're innocently wanting to get the word out about their site so allow people to share things. At the same time, Facebook is rather intrusive as to what details it gets. That's the cost of it being free. -

Retaining water?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to kerryd.away's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IV fluids cause it.. Keep yourself hydrated, stick to the post-op diet, and it'll go away. Mine went away after a week but some people retain water longer (especially older people, or those with comorbidities such as heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, etc.). -
Vegetable Intolerances after GSV
PatientEleventyBillion replied to AngieK72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just hit myself over the head with a hammer and turn into a vegetable for a while. 0 calories. -
Given potassium is likely considered an electrolyte, my guess is people with potassium deficiencies are probably drinking too much water and having too little else. Even worse if this is combined with physical activity where one sweats.

Help! I ate a whole Pizza. How??
PatientEleventyBillion replied to wlsfeb2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The restriction is best utilized with slow digesting food.. like foods rife with protein and protein+dietary fiber. The workaround regarding carbs and restriction not only comes from how quickly carb laden food tends to pass through the digestive tract (it doesn't take much effort for the body to digest/break down), but how quickly it enters the bloodstream (especially bad for diabetics), how quickly it hits the liver, and moreover, how it bypasses the fundus hormone ghrelin. The reason for the latter is because carb laden food often affects the brains reward pathway, causing secretions of hormones that cause physiological and psychological reliance. So not only is it not keeping a person satiated (which causes a person to eat more), it's slowly causing addiction that's tough to overcome. I still think certain carbs like sugar should be classified as a psychoactive drug. -
My Libido has Increased After Surgery!
PatientEleventyBillion replied to John67's topic in The Guys’ Room
I've found myself having significant changes with my libido at only 100 pounds less. While marriage is marriage and the wife and I can only do it so much with our busy lives, I've found the amount of times I'd fap going from once every few weeks to at least 3 times a week. My brain/hormones are definitely nagging me a lot more. Sometimes visual stimulation can help kick start things, and once you get going again I think the body will start expecting more and start nagging you too. -

Dates that don't revolve around food
PatientEleventyBillion replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Singles Forum
Fun date ideas.. I second the mini-golf idea, OP. But if you want to have just as much fun, rent a driver and go to a driving range. It's fun just whacking the ball everywhere, and since golf isn't so strength reliant (as it is form), it's an easy thing to learn. Movies are a good one. Especially if you have some type of card that gives rewards. Every single movie my wife and I go to are free due to better utilization of CC rewards. Beaches are always fun as well, provided you have the weather for it. It was always fun spending much of my life in NorCal being on a beach and watching some tourist happily sprint toward the (ocean) water thinking "ITS SUNNY CALIFORNIA TIME TO DIVE INTO SOME WARM WATER", they jump in and then fly like lightning back onto the sand as it's way too cold and need a bodysuit to enjoy it. I always had a thing for concerts (heavy metal), sports venues (hockey, American football, Association football/soccer), and sports bars/entertainment venues like Dave and Busters. Theme parks are good too, but given how overweight many of us are, it's generally not a good idea until we get the weight down. I had my first embarrassing theme park moment being too fat for a ride when I visited Cedar Point in 2016. Was not cool. If sightseeing is your thing, there's plenty of stuff around the country to see. Now is prime season in Alberta (Canada) to visit Banff National Park. The snow season is cool too for skiing/boarding, but you can do that pretty much anywhere. Can also invest the time and money into protecting yourselves (enjoying your second amendment rights) and buy a gun/sign up for a range. There's so many things I've done and can think of doing more of that isn't eating.. -
How soon after surgery did you start Prilosec
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Joann454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Haven't taken Prilosec for many years (OTC), due to side effects. Took Prevacid (Lansoprazole) for years until surgery. Since discharge I've taken Pantoloc (Pantoprazole) and am prescribed this for 6 months, likely then going back to Prevacid if I need it. -

April sleevers!?

I actually want my restriction to let up a tad.. the restriction being so restrictive has caused me to mostly avoid eating. I have to literally make myself otherwise I wouldn't. -
How many calories were you eating during pre-op diet?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to MSinger's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1000-1400 cals a day for my 3 month pre op diet and still managed to dump about 80.
