    April sleevers!?

One thing I realized, but don't yet understand, is why women are so brutal to one another.. like so much animosity and backhandedness. My wife was tormented in high school by other girls for being 5 pounds overweight.

I fainted at a concert last night

I guess in some regard I'm thankful there aren't many concert tours out here to be tempted with while early on post op.

    VENTING - can vs should

Well I mean, what is best all depends on the person anyways. We all have quirks when it comes to what we eat, what we can eat, along with our lifestyles.. so we all filter information according to how we personally want to do things. The issue for this thread is more like this "safe space" mentality under the premise of tolerance, which is an oxymoron.

    Losing Weight too fast?

Losing weight can be quite hard on the liver, so it's good to keep up to date on liver enzymes (inflammation). At any rate, if you're getting the water, protein, and nutrition you're supposed to and dump weight quickly, it's fine. It's the unhealthy types of weight loss, i.e. starvation or malnutrition, that is the concern.

    Alcoholic Drinks

Mixers tend to have a ton of carbs.. that has always been my choice too. Some prior post they were worried about carbonation and while that's relevant for gas pains it ignores the effect carbs have in halting weight loss or going the opposite direction and causing weight gain. The very reason many of us are here is due to a lack of self regulating so I hope the people going back to drinks so soon learned this in such a short period of time.. lest we read more threads of people confused as to why they're stalling and gaining while drinking.

    VENTING - can vs should

Whether or not it changed anything is moot .. you give your opinions.. I give mine. If you think you're the only one with the right of an opinion think again.

    Sugar-free versus regular popsicles

I agree that SF pops taste like crap. Can't stand the taste of sucralose. Best bet is to try and make your own pops with like dabs of sugar. Like 1-3g each. Shouldn't take much to flavor it.

    VENTING - can vs should

People give advice and opinions how they give advice and opinions. If you're offended by people not taking a coddling approach ignore them. Every day we're bombarded with information and have to decide what's relevant to us and what's not. This is no different. Whining won't change how people are. The world does not adjust and conform to you, it's vice versa.

    VENTING - can vs should

So you're frustrated because people give opinions you don't like and have an approach you don't like. Congratulations and welcome to planet Earth. I don't see the cause to have this coddling approach you favor. The issue for many is depression, and as someone who has had to battle it numerous times, it is a life and death issue and should be treated with the cold reality that presents much of us when faced with choices that aren't easy, when the body's organs start to fail due to horrific choices. I've seen first hand how coddling people just helps make them comfortable making stupid decisions. The beauty of freedom is, if you don't like the opinions or advice of someone, can always ignore it, or like you did, whine about it. It's not going to change the mentality when you're on a forum with people who are highly motivated to change things and someone either wants to eat crap or brags about eating crap.

    April sleevers!?

I went through the arduous weight management program in Alberta in order to get it funded without any cost whatsoever. Doing it this way got not only continuous weight management support but post-op care for at least a year or two. I actually mentioned the other day to them about those from Alberta that go to Mexico and they said they wouldn't support them at the endocrinology/metabolism/wm/bariatric centre. I was lucky I had it done when I did, my RD went nuts on me right before surgery and I gave her a huge earful post-op, to which she raged out of the room. LOL. Oh well. It's done, and was free, alles ist gut.

Surgery Cancelled Due to High Blood Pressure

Also to add.. low sodium, as in, avoid added salt.

Surgery Cancelled Due to High Blood Pressure

I had peak BP of 170s/115, and thats on only first line treatment of only metoprolol and HCTZ (hydro, water pill). After many dietary changes 3 months later my BP was regularly 100-120/65-90 before surgery, my latest post-op and off HCTZ (only taking metoprolol) was 103/81. If you're on amlodopine that's generally a second line treatment (for more advanced hypertension issues), and if your BP is spiking that high on second line treatment, something is wrong.. and you're very high risk of stroke or heart attack unless it gets under control quickly. This is generally diet induced. Stay away from dense carb foods and liquids. Talk to a nutritionist or RD and get into better habits immediately. Blood pressure spikes quite a bit during surgery. If your BP is uncontrolled as it seems now, the surgeon likely sees you as too much of a risk.

    Alcoholic Drinks

I personally won't drink a drop of alcohol until I know my liver issues are completely resolved first. Another criteria I'm imposing is to be my bottomed-out weight, so I don't have to worry about stalls that will result. Like others here have shown with their planning, it makes 100% sense to go at it from a logical perspective.. just be careful if you're doing any sort of exercise or prolonged standing. Keep hydrated and fed.

not losing weight day 18 post op

If that's the way you're going to look at it, expect perpetual disappointment.

Stall ... for almost a month ... so frustrating

If you're worried about your surgeon seeing a number on the scale.. then are you journaling? Input your exercise into MFP or something as well and see how many calories your body comes out with. It's possible you could be starving yourself due to the exercise. It's also possible your body just might want you at this weight.

    3 month liquid diet

Nice. Do they have you on a glucose meter? I don't know how bad 8-9 is... they don't have you on insulin? Just normal meds like metformin/forxiga?

    Full liquid vs puréed

I went straight to full fluids, after doing clear fluids at the hospital. I had yogurt drinks, unsweetened applesauce, milk, tons of water, and took my meds with tiny amounts of apple juice (like less than 10mL). If they've already done leak tests/barium swallow on you to verify your digestive parts are working correctly (which I'm pretty sure a clear fluid diet goes into, they need to see you can drink water/eat ice chips without leaks or complications), I don't get why they wouldn't pass you immediately to full fluids. Puree.. you probably want to wait a week or two after surgery. For puree I had beans/melted block cheese, oatmeal, meat sauce (i.e. Ragu), and still had a few things from full fluids. Did that for a few more weeks and went on to soft solids and then normal.

    Sugar-free versus regular popsicles

Non SF pops are so laden with simple carbs (sugar) with no nutritional value, it would be utterly disastrous to have these. Pre-op: Your liver will not shrink. Post-op: You're setting yourself up to gain weight and have reactive hypoglycemic episodes, even if you're not diabetic. Liquid carbs go right through the body, get absorbed right away, they hit the bloodstream very quickly. This causes the pancreas to dump insulin into the bloodstream, but in all likelihood what you've had will already have passed through. It'll lower your blood sugars dramatically to a point of danger. If you're post-op, the liver is already under extreme stress trying to help supply the body with enough energy. Pre-op, you want the liver to shrink. The mechanism works the same when it comes to losing weight and liver shrinking. If you're consuming so much sugar so quickly, and it doesn't take much to overdo it, the liver takes in all the carbs, converts it to sugars for storage, then if it has too much, which happens easily, it converts to fatty acids, that infiltrate the liver itself and get sent around the body. Fat infiltration makes the liver larger and more slippery, at first. Thus, it will work against you both in pre-op and post-op stages. You won't lose weight, and you'll make your surgery more risky, possibly even causing the surgeon not to go through with it if your liver isn't shrunk.

    Newbie questions

The problem with going back to work so soon when you're on your feet all day is going to be that you won't have the energy. You're going to be gassed. It won't work out well.

    3 month liquid diet

I was happy. Dr. Gill was awesome. I'm quite shocked at what happened to you. Your blood sugars skyrocketed under the liquid diet? Who is your RD (at RRDTC?) if you mind me asking? Diabetes definitely affects the vision which is why they kept doing tests on me being type 2.. but I actually had vision improvement, so I try and make sense of that. Of course my sugars were 3-month/hba1c of peak 7.9 (now 5.7 with a 3 month coming up next week). I was on a diet with real food.. as in, almonds, burgers (no buns/condiments besides dabs of ketchup), string cheese, chicken, etc. the whole time, and when I confronted my RD like two days ago about not being able to talk to her because she was freaking out on me during pre-op stage she flipped out again and left the room, which I found hilariously ironic, so I had a chat with the WM director about her issues. Post-op I'm back on solid foods.. the restriction is real. I had a mild stall in the 260s but losing again so alles ist gut. I can eat only 3 nuggets before I'm full, any more and my stomach hurts, I get that overdose of parasympathetic nervous system, get really tired, and so on. Please update us on your pre-op if you can, I'd like to see how you're progressing, and lemme know who your RRDTC people are, if that's who you go through. My initial CM was Nikki, RD was Stephanie.. Nikki moved, I was stuck with Carolyn who I hate, Stephanie became a control freak who flips out on people, so I switched and now I have Hallveig and Amanda.

I fainted at a concert last night

For post WLS patients the hypoglycemia after booze would be reactive, and it can cause you to pass out. Alcohol is extremely carb-dense, and its liquid so it will be absorbed very quickly, your body will respond in kind by releasing tons of insulin into the bloodstream. The booze will past through your digestive tract extremely quickly and the insulin will lower the glucose in your bloodstream by far more than you can handle. This problem gets compounded if you haven't had much to eat or drink, as in water, not booze, in the prior few hours. At any decent concert one can be there for hours.. even worse if they're burning off energy standing, walking, moshing, etc., and not sitting, out in the heat, it only gets worse. Sometimes people need to learn the hard way that their bodies can't take much post-op.
